School of Journalism and Communication The Vision
  • The School of Journalism (SOJC) has been exploring the idea of a Portland program since the early 1990s. With an anonymous gift of $4.5 million and a $4.5-million gift from Business Wire founder and CEO Lorry Lokey, that vision will soon become a reality. The SOJC will open the University of Oregon Journalism and Communication George S. Turnbull Portland Center in fall 2005 and plans to offer degree programs by fall 2006. A faculty committee is reviewing program options. In the planning stages are a masters program in management communications for working professionals as well as a “Senior Experience,” which would synthesize senior-level coursework with internships in public relations for the school's undergraduate and professional masters programs. The University of Oregon Journalism and Communication George S. Turnbull Portland Center will serve working professionals in Portland who wish to advance their careers and will create new opportunities in the state's media center for Eugene-based students. The ultimate vision for the center, which is expected to be fully operational by Fall 2007, is to draw on the school's strengths in all professional areas. The center will be located in the University of Oregon Portland Center at 722 SW 2nd Ave. until a permanent site is found.

LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
The Patricia C. Inskeep Library is open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on school days. The collection includes an impressive collection of over 10,000 volumes in French, Spanish, German and English. The collection includes picture books, chapter books, fiction and non-fiction, magazines, videos, and books with tapes in several languages. Both the librarian and the library aide are bilingual in French and English. We encourage parents to visit the library, borrow resources, and ask for recommendations. The International Conference Center in the library is available for meetings and class use. The children of the elementary school visit the library with their class once a week for story time in French and to check-out books. The middle school students come to the library on a regular basis with or without their teachers to do research, browse, and select books. Sixth grade students take an information literacy class. Through the library or computer lab, the students can access Encarta Encyclopedia and an array of subscription research databases in multiple languages.

CDC, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control New information from a CDC study may help school administrators in better planning and implementing violence prevention programs. In analyzing school-associated violent deaths since the beginning of the 1992 school year, CDC researchers found that student homicide rates are typically highest near the start of the fall and spring semesters. Student suicide rates were higher during the spring semester. Over the seven-year study, CDC confirmed 209 school-associated violent deaths. The latter equates to an average of 1 student homicide event every 7 school days, and 1 student suicide event every 31 school days. Additional violence prevention information is available on the home page of CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at:
