Oregon Genealogical Libraries and Collections By Connie Lenzen, CGRS An article prepared for the January 2001 NGS Newsmagazine. Northwesterners have roots that connect to all the states in the United States and from many foreign countries. Genealogical library holdings reflect this diversity. Libraries close to the conference site with comprehensive genealogy collections are described in this article. People come to Oregon to research their Oregon Trail relatives. Oregon's early settlers left family and friends "back home." As years passed, correspondence decreased and eventually ceased. It is now time to trace these relatives and to see if they left information that will aid your genealogical research. A summary of major holdings, the hours, public transportation options, and admission fees for the five largest Oregon historical/genealogical libraries/archives are given in this article. Three repositories are in Portland, the conference site, and two are in Salem, Oregon - an hour away from Portland. The 2001 NGS conference theme is "Explore New Frontiers." "This organization (Sproul) absolutely has nothing to do with America Votes," said Kevin Looper, the state organizing director for America Votes. America Votes is a non-partisan political organization formed in July 2003 to increase voter registration, education and participation in electoral politics. Advertisement "We are in the process of pursuing all of our legal options to pursue (an order to) cease and desist." But the man behind the matter says it was an innocent mistake. "We were not trying to copy their name," said Nathan Sproul, owner of the consulting and management company. "All we were trying to do is register people to vote." "Our firm has been contracted to help coordinate a national non-partisan voter registration drive, America Votes! in several states across the nation." The letter went on to ask if the company could register people to vote in front of the library.
