Conclusion Foreword This report describes a program in the schools of Lincoln County, Oregon, to reduce the incidence and consequences of violence among young people. The program in Lincoln County implements the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP), an initiative of Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR). RCCP is now used in 350 schools that serve 150,000 young people in nine states. Children who participate in RCCP increase their ability to manage emotions and resolve conflict. Research suggests that the program has had a significant positive impact on the development of children who received regular instruction (an average of 25 lessons) in the RCCP curriculum. These children saw their world in a less hostile way and were more likely to choose nonviolent ways to resolve conflict. The program was equally effective for boys and girls and for low- and high-risk children. Preliminary evidence suggests that children who received substantial instruction in the RCCP curriculum performed significantly better on academic achievement tests and were reported by their teachers as less aggressive than all other children. The most positive change occurred in children who received regular instruction over two years.

Today's OEA March 2001 Oregon's K-12 Public Schools The following K-12 school districts currently provide distance-learning services for their students. In each case, the distance learning programs are primarily designed for students who reside in the district area, however students residing outside the area may also enroll in courses. Typically, tuition for in-district students is covered by the school district and reimbursed by the state. Tuition for out-of-district students is normally covered by the home district of the student through interdistrict agreement. In some cases, students pay out-of-pocket for courses (course costs range from $320 to $350 per semester class), especially for summer school courses or for courses to supplement a homeschool program. Eugene: CyberSchool www.cyberschool.k12.or.us CyberSchool is a consortium of public school institutions located in several states that offer distance learning courses to students in their district. Based in Eugene, Oregon, Cyberschool partners with the Oregon Public Education Network (OPEN) and Eugene’s 4-J School District to provide online learning opportunities to students in Oregon. The teachers employed by Cyberschool in Eugene are licensed professionals and they are covered by the collective bargaining agreement. (All Cyberschool teachers in the consortium are licensed in the state in which they are based.) District management of CyberSchool is currently being transferred to Linn Benton-Lincoln Education Service District.
