    Geography
Oregon's contrasting physical features are characterized by great forested mountain slopes and treeless basins, rushing rivers and barren playas, lush valleys and extensive wastelands. The major determinant for these unusual climatic differences is the Cascade Range, a rugged mountain chain running north to south c.100 mi (160 km) inland. As the eastward-moving air masses, warmed by the Alaska Current and heavy with moisture from the Pacific Ocean, rise and meet the cooler mountain temperatures, rain is precipitated over the western third of Oregon. Dry air and continental climate prevail over the eastern two thirds of the state. The Pacific shoreline (c.300 mi/480 km) is bordered by narrow coastal plains of sandy beaches, luxuriant pastures, and occasional jutting promontories. About 25 mi (40 km) inland, the rugged Coast Range rises to heights of 4,000 ft (1,220 m) to serve as the western wall of the Willamette Valley. In the valley, where the navigable Willamette flows north through miles of rolling farmlands into the Columbia River, lie the agricultural, commercial, and industrial centers of the state.

I was the lucky recipient of the Summer Geographic Alliance Oregon -Hawaii exchange this year. Never having been to Hawaii, I was excited about going, but a little apprehensive, because I had not traveled so far to attend a workshop without knowing someone on the other end. My fears were short-lived as I met the group of friendly people I was to spend the next 10 days with.
The Hawaii Geographic Alliance is a residence workshop held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. We were randomly matched with roommates. Mine had moved to Hawaii when she was 5, and was an excellent tour guide, having been a resident of Hawaii for 30 years. We got along great, many nights staying up till the wee hours talking. In fact, everyone went out of their way to make me feel welcome. I was one of three "foreigners". The other two were from Guam. Everyone else was from " The Islands."

D R A F T #3 DECISION MAKING PROCESS
FOR SEAMLESS REGIONAL SPATIAL DATA SET MANAGEMENT AND COORDINATION
March 2000
Jointly Prepared By
Interorganizational Resource Information Coordinating Council (IRICC) Washington Geographic Information Council (WAGIC) Oregon Geographic Information Council (OGIC)
Background and Introduction This document defines a decision making process that will enable the coordinated and equitable development, management, and administration of the Regional Spatial Data Clearinghouse (RSDC) over time. For the purpose of this document, the term "Regional Spatial Data Clearinghouse" refers to a central repository and/or distribution site for actively updated seamless, regional spatial data that is coordinated among many organizations and is related to the state framework initiatives and the entire National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). There are several groups that are involved in the efforts of the RSDC to better coordinate geospatial data collection, use, and maintenance. The cooperative venture to build the RSDC will help address many issues that span any one group and require collaboration in order to be successfully addressed. A few examples of these types of issues include; endangered species recovery plans, forestry ecosystem management, growth management, transportation, economic development, and water resource management. It is expected that these types of issues will continue to surface and change over time. It is also anticipated that even more groups will join in the RSDC effort, and the regional focus will continue to expand. The coordination of information may also expand beyond geospatial data.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
FOR SEAMLESS REGIONAL SPATIAL DATA SET MANAGEMENT AND COORDINATION December 1999
Jointly Prepared By Interorganizational Resource Information Coordinating Council (IRICC) Washington Geographic Information Council (WAGIC) Oregon Geographic Information Council (OGIC)
Regional Spatial Data Clearinghouse Definition Within the Geographic Information System (GIS) community, the term "clearinghouse" is often referred to within the context of the National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse, which is an effort to provide a communication network of data descriptions, or metadata, to data producers, users, and managers through the Internet. Background and Introduction The Washington State Geographic Information Council (WAGIC) and the Oregon State Geographic Information Council (OGIC) have been actively involved in developing standards and mechanisms to support building statewide framework data. Framework data includes the core, geospatial data that is commonly needed by many federal, state, local, and tribal government organizations, as well as private organizations. Though many organizations need and use the same basic geospatial data, most existing geospatial data sets have been developed independently. This has resulted in both an inefficient use of resources and a barrier to effective cross-jurisdictional analysis due to data incompatibility. Key goals of the state framework efforts include reducing the duplication of effort in geospatial data collection and maintenance and increasing data sharing capabilities.

Introduction
As part of their long-term studies on the alpine flora of western North America, John and Hilary Birks visited Oregon and northern California in July 2003 and they led an Alpine Garden Society expedition there in July 2004. This website is based on these two visits. It is designed to illustrate the botanical highlights of some of the mountain areas visited in southern and central Oregon and northern California.
Plant Identification
Identification of plants in Oregon and northern California is a slightly frustrating business as Peck’s (1961) A Manual of the Higher Plants in Oregon is now out-of-date both in terms of its taxonomy and its nomenclature. Hitchcock and Cronquist’s (1990) up-to-date Flora of the Pacific Northwest does not cover all of the area we visited. The Jepson Manual (Hickman 1993) of the higher plants of California is massive (1400 pages) as it covers the flora of the whole of California. It is relatively difficult to use for some genera (e.g. Eriogonum Mimulus ) because of the huge number of species in the keys for particular genera, when, in reality, there may be only a few relevant species in the area of northern California we visited.

History-Onyx 9
Hello fellow Internet surfer and welcome to a gem of a site dedicated to illuminating the onyx-like parallels unearthed from an otherwise beclouded and boring American and world historical perspective into its many hues and flavors, a spectrum inclusive of most light that makes up the untold stories, fascinating stories and journeys not quite attached or put together in this theatrical or holistic manner as you will find!
We bring many years of personal and unique historical research, reading, collaboration, living, and writing experiences. One of us is a published historian, journalist, and genealogist, whose roots are in the Central Oregon Coast, the primary though not exclusive gathering or focal point of these stories. And her co-author is more centered, though not exclusively so on the personal-spiritual journey as a former Lutheran minister, and how this has come into play to reinvigorate her own philosophical historical understanding of faith and her questions of the world-church professional Christian training, vision and cultural paradigms, relying upon her common sense and also the expertise and critique of those historically disinherited, disenfranchised, and despised.
Neither of us is professionally enamored by historicism in the classical sense, or any particular intellectual chains, other than the challenge to loosen the usual grip of white western european, heterosexist and masculinist elitism! And yes, we believe in being politically correct, and are proud of it, that we still name the names! We are students and practitioners of folk and established history, and are expanding our understanding of story, wishing to share some of those exciting findings and perspectives. We plan to update this site regularly with the little known gems and connections to "the rest of the story" usually relegated to footnotes we have uncovered from the current draft of our mammoth, interconnected, well documented history saga

Enough logs pile up at this Oregon lumber mill to build an entire suburban subdivision. Forest management is at the center of a difficult debate. People are struggling to balance demand for timber, recreational uses, and the preservation of our wild natural heritage—like the few remaining stands of old-growth trees.

WHITMAN MISSION NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE INTERPRETIVE THEMES Our park has eight primary themes. All educational programs done by the park staff should address at least one of these themes:
  • Marcus and Narcissa Prentiss Whitman are memorialized for their courage, adventure and high idealism, as shaped by their personalities, values, beliefs, and labor while missionaries among the Cayuse Indians of Old Oregon.
The mission, established by Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, operated as a self-sufficient Protestant Indian mission and school between 1836 and 1847.
Cultural differences between the Columbia Plateau Indians and the Euro-American missionaries and subsequent American emigrants provide the context for the Whitmans' deaths.
The Whitmans' association with the Oregon Trail and the development and cooperation of the mission at Waiilatpu, resulted in the mission becoming a way station along the trail.
