A visit to Portland, Oregon (Oregon Geographic Alliance-ILI Institute)
August 1 - 12, 1995 by Connie Mark Portland, Oregon is know as the City of Roses, but I think of Portland as the city of Bridges. The Willamette River is considered a coordinate that separates the east from the west of the city. There are five Bridges. The Willamette River is considered a coordinate that separates the east from the west of the city. There are five bridges that cross the Willamette River in Portland...Howthorne, Morrison, Burnside, steel, and Broadway Bridge. Burnside Bridge and Street is the other coordinate that separates the north from the south. In Honolulu, we usually think of Mauka and Makai, diamond or eva. We mental map our island by that. The Oregonians mental map their city with the Willamette River and Burnside Street and the direction coordinates, NW. NE. SE. SE. The Columbia River can be seen in the close distance, though it separates the state of Washington and Oregon, it is not as notable in this city where the Willamette passes right through it! I spent as afternoon by the riverside near the Hawthorne bridge. I was intrigued with the raising of the bridge. A part of the bridge can rise up like an elevator to let tall ships through. I usually think of bridges as opening up. One morning we were also stopped on that bridge, to let a ship through. What excitement!

SOURCE: Gordon Matzke, 541-737-1217 CORVALLIS - The Oregon State Geography Bee will be at Oregon State University on Friday, April 9, as 100 of the state's young geographical whizzes compete for an ultimate prize of $25,000. This is the third consecutive year OSU has hosted the event, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society and Bank1One. The preliminary round of oral competition will begin at 1 p.m. in LaSells Stewart Center with the final round to start at 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public. "This is a popular event that usually attracts about 500 people, including teachers and parents," said Sheri Ruegsegger, state coordinator for the contest. "A single winner will be chosen to represent Oregon at the national finals on May 25-26 in Washington, D.C., where the top prize includes a $25,000 college scholarship and trip to Australia." That, of course, is if the contestant knows the answer to a question like this: "What U.S. state capital was founded as a gold rush town and isn't linked to the rest of its state by roads?" Too easy. Juneau, Alaska. But lest you think you're ready for prime time, answer these:

Western United States Landscape Characterization
Northwest Oregon Pilot Study Area, Oregon Abstract The United States Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) (opens in new browser window) is conducting a pilot study in the western United States. This study will advance the science of ecological monitoring and demonstrate techniques for regional-scale assessment of the condition of aquatic resources in the 14 western states in EPA Regions 8, 9, and 10 (shown below). This browser is a demonstration of a versatile communication device for our landscape ecological assessment products, reports, assessments, data studies, and analysis tools. CLICK ON IMAGE TO ENLARGE The landscape component of the Western Pilot Study provides information that has multiple management implications. Regional Landscape products will be provided to assess the spatial distribution of landscape stressors on aquatic ecosystems across each region. This will assist regional managers in understanding how landscape conditions contribute to varying aquatic resource conditions. As such, the products also will contribute to formulation of specific management actions for different geographic locations within each region. The first step in providing regional products will be to test and demonstrate landscape assessment methodologies on sub-regional areas of high importance to each Region. This browser concentrates on the Region 10 Northwest Oregon pilot area.

My comment: Physical geography has a close relation to Earth Sciences, which at Stanford took over the map collection, etc. when the geography department was abolished. Geography bees do some good, but they do not replace the great geography departments with world-famous names for which the US was famous until around 1950. Ronald Hilton - 4/7/02

By Ann Geracimos
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
A Roper poll commissioned by the National Geographic Society several years ago found that just 13 percent of Americans between the age of 18 and 24, or one in seven, could find Iraq on a map, and 83 percent could not locate Afghanistan. (Just over a third of the 18- to 24-year-olds polled, however, knew that the Marquesas Islands, featured in a previous season's "Survivor" television show, are in the South Pacific.)
As a result of this survey and similar reports, nonprofit organizations have taken up the cause of trying to improve Americans' awareness of geography and its importance; those people most concerned include some of the country's dedicated teachers.
One such teacher is Terri Simons, a sixth-grade teacher from Eugene, Ore., who is a consulting member of a state-based network of teachers and parents called the National Geographic Alliance (www.ngsednet.org), run by the education arm of the National Geographic Society. Mrs. Simons' efforts include providing teachers with the resources to implement geography in their curriculums.
"I say to colleagues: 'How do you learn about what happened if you don't know the where, because the where is practically the why?' I see geography as involving myself with the world," Mrs. Simons says, adding that "some of the best teaching methods are also the hardest to do. We have large class sizes, and it is almost suicidal to take 44 kids out on a mapping activity to go out and walk around and take notice of cultural and human characteristics of the environment."
