In Applying Fair Use to New Technologies CONFU's failure to develop acceptable fair use guidelines. The truth is, of course, that teachers have always pushed the limits of the fair use exception. Most of us, at one time or another, have found that perfect piece of text, video, music, or art, closed our eyes, and hoped against hope that our use of it fell into the murky area of "fair use." For the most part, cocooned in our own classrooms, we got away with it. With the advent of new very public technologies, we no longer have that luxury. "In the past," John Adsit, online education coordinator for Colorado's Jefferson County Schools, told Education World, "teachers got away with illegal practices not even having an inkling that they were illegal because they were in the privacy of a classroom with a closed door, surrounded by students who had no clue that anything illegal was going on. As we use the Web, we blow open the door and leave our practices out there for the whole world to see. We all have to become more knowledgeable and more careful."

Westlake wins national music education honor

By GAIL SCHONTZLER , Chronicle Staff Writer Renee Westlake gets pleas for help by e-mail from as far away as Oregon and Alaska, sent by college music majors who are struggling with their first teaching jobs. What do I do with the kid who's swearing at me? What do I do with the kid in choir who can't carry a tune? Westlake, 51, draws on her 26 years of music teaching experience to offer advice and encouragement. She may tell them the story of the Bozeman kindergarten teacher who sang terribly off-key. Westlake advised the teacher to just keep singing with her class and eventually, she'd get better. She laughs as she recalls that it took three years, but it finally worked.

Dev Maulik, MD, PhD
Message from the Chairman Winthrop-University Hospital has had an abiding commitment to women's healthcare since the early part of this century, when it became the first Long Island hospital to establish a separate pavilion for women. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has supported and sustained that focus. Our resolve to provide residents with the finest education and training experience is second only to our commitment to provide women with exceptional patient care. The faculty and staff are committed to creating and sustaining an optimal educational environment for acquiring knowledge, developing and honing technical skill, and fostering sensitivity toward women and their families. We pride ourselves on selecting house staff members who are energetic, enthusiastic, diligent and dedicated to providing unparalleled patient care. Our goal is to train physicians to be excellent clinicians with the ability to continue learning and advancing so they always remain outstanding practitioners. However, in this very challenging healthcare environment, we also focus on helping them prepare for a successful medical practice. Our broad-scoped opportunities meet the academic and clinical needs of primary care obstetricians and gynecologists, as well as those who choose to become subspecialists.

BEHIND THE NEWS CASE STUDY Oregon National Guard Implementation of a computer output to laser disk (C.O.L.D.) system has reduced by two-thirds the number of hours required to close the books and perform other research-intensive tasks at the Oregon National Guard. In the past accountants and other members of the United States Property Fiscal Officers' (USPFO) staff spent much of their time searching through information stored on paper reports and microfiche. In an effort to improve this situation, information technology staff members evaluated alternative methods of publishing reports generated by the organization's custom financial applications to make them available to network users.

Return to Mentoring Information Categories List The author of this web site has been keeping track of state-level mentoring programs for years. During that time I have seen that it's: 1. Difficult to draw conclusions about the sum of state-level novice teacher programming, because it is in constant flux 2. Possible to look at state level activity from several different perspectives, because of the various and complex themes that weave through beginning teacher support systems. This report takes one view point in presenting and analyzing the patterns in state-wide mentoring and induction programming. That approach views mentoring on a continuum in which assistance of novice teachers is at one end of the continuum and assessment of novice teachers is on the other end. Necessarily, that perspective "colors" how this information is presented and analyzed. What is presented here is:
  • A chart summarizing some of the studies and illustrating the changing picture described above, plus references to all the studies I found.

Brochures, course sequence plans, listings and descriptions of specific courses may be obtained from the Human Development Office (PSY 205). For more information, contact the department secretary for referral to the faculty advisor (562) 985-4344. Students interested in Human Development may choose one of two options: a B.A. in Human Development or a B.A. in Liberal Studies with a Human Development concentration. Graduate programs may be developed under the auspices of the Special Major Program. Students can plan a program geared to specific career requirements (e.g., Gerontology, Multiple Subjects Credential, or graduate work in human development and its related disciplines). Early advisement is strongly recommended.
