ALL razor clam areas on the entire Oregon Coast are closed because of elevated domoic acid levels. This closure was announced by the Oregon Department of Agriculture. For more information on this close please visit the ODA Web site May 6, 2005
The Oregon Department of Agriculture is extending the current coast wide razor clam closure to include mussels and non-razor clams on the north and central beaches, spits, and jetties. The closure boundaries for these additional species are from the Columbia River at Astoria to the south jetty of the Umpqua River at Reedsport. Commercial and recreational harvesting of razor clams remains closed on the entire coast at all harvest areas. Domoic acid levels continue to rise in mussels and razor clams samples collected this week from Reedsport to Astoria. All coastal bays are open for other types of clamming except for jetties and spits at the mouths of the bays. Harvesters in the bays without jetties should take care to harvest well inside the mouth of the bay A recreational shellfish license is required for all harvesters 14 years or older in accordance with Senate Bill 597 Q: Who needs a recreational shellfish license?

Education Reform
There is an endless stream of education reform initiatives in California, but little there changes. When I read this editorial on why reform there would never happen, I found Oregon and California have a lot in common. Here are seven reasons that reforming public education will remain nothing more than a political slogan in the Golden State: 1. The 335,000-member California Teachers Association has no incentive to change a system that puts most education funding into salaries and benefits. Check. And California's teachers are covered by their own retirement system, whereas Oregon's are part of PERS. Thus, there are more government employees to resist change here. 2. The majority of the California legislators don't dare take on the CTA, which is a major contributor to their political campaigns.

Current Initial Licensure Programs
In accordance with new regulations from the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC), the SOU Teacher Education Program began a redesigned teacher preparation program in July 1998. The new initial licensure program at SOU leads to a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). The SOU MAT program is a yearlong program, beginning at the end of July and ending the following July. In addition to receiving a MAT degree, graduates of the program are licensed to teach at one or two authorization levels. The authorization levels are:

    STUDY FINDINGS:
    • Oregon relies on farmworkers to produce its labor-intensive crops. Most workers are Hispanic and many are undocumented residents. While a strong partnership exists between farmers and workers on most Oregon farms, language and cultural differences and the immigrant status of the workforce make workers vulnerable to exploitation and farmers vulnerable to the loss of workers at critical harvest times. While the state struggles to deal with this situation, some factors are national or global in context:
The flow of workers between Mexico and the United States is well established, but much is illegal under national immigration laws. The globalized market for agriculture lowers many commodity prices; the prices Oregon farmers receive are sometimes below their costs of production.
Federal and state laws concerning working conditions for farmworkers set standards that are different from those for most of America’s workers. Compliance with and enforcement of laws that do exist are uneven.
