      Abstract:
These next 2 articles trace the founding of University Studies from 2 distinct points of view-that of a historian who was a member of the 1st cohort of faculty to teach in Freshman Inquiry and that of the current director of the program, who chaired the original committee charged with revising the general education program. The first article chronicles the significant individuals and the unique set of events that brought the program to fruition; the second provides an insider's account of the deliberations and decisions of those who actually devised the reform. Nyssa, "The Gateway to Oregon," was founded in 1883 near the Oregon Short Line Railroad as it pushed through southern Idaho and Eastern Oregon. It served as a railroad watering station; a convenient point between Ontario and Parma for several years, and later grew into a trading station used by settlers along the Snake River and the Owyhee Ditch. Two stories claim different ways the town got its name; the first says Nyssa is the Indian word meaning sagebrush, and was given that name by early residents and the second story is that Nyssa was given the name of a town in Greece by a railroad section hand.

Oregon Legislature finalizes education budget
Lawmakers had mixed responses to education funding decisions after the second-longest legislative session in the state's history
Nicholas Wilbur
News Reporter
August 09, 2005 After the second-longest legislative session in Oregon history, lawmakers finalized state budget appropriations at 6:20 a.m. Friday. One of the most debated and controversial issues of the session, education funding for Oregon schools and colleges remains a hot issue with mixed responses. Tuition for Oregon universities will increase 3 percent over the next two academic years, down from 10 percent in the last two biennia. Saunders said she was hopeful that progress will continue through small increases over time. The OUS progress report showed that students would be required to work 46 hours per week year round at a minimum wage job in order to finance attendance costs at the University. The Education and General Program appropriation, a subset of the General Fund Budget, is made up of graduate and undergraduate instruction, but does not include statewide public services programs or capital construction funds. Education and General Program appropriations increased 4 percent, or $22 million, from the 2003-05 appropriations, but funding is still down 11 percent, or $51.9 million, from the 2001-03 biennia.

Governor tours state to speak on education funding plan
His funding solution emphasizes unifying Oregon's education system and growing the state's economy
Gabe Bradley
News Editor July 21, 2005 Gov. Ted Kulongoski visited Eugene on Tuesday to promote his plan to find a stable funding solution for education in Oregon. The roundtable-style meeting at Lane Community College was part of a statewide speaking tour about education. This tour comes several weeks after state House Speaker Karen Minnis (R-Wood Village) announced her plan for stable education funding, which would dedicate 51 percent of personal income tax revenue for K-12 education. The seven parts of the education enterprise are: Pre-K, K-12, the Department of Education, Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development, The Oregon University System, Oregon Health Sciences University and the Oregon Student Assistance Commission. Kulongoski began his address by outlining the history of inadequate school funding in Oregon. Specifically, he mentioned the fates of a variety of income tax, property tax and sales tax proposals that would have funded education.

    http://oregonone.org/onefaq10.htm
FAQs How do I transfer courses? How do I transfer from one institution to another? For college/university students, there are many issues students may encounter when attempting to transfer courses and credits from one institution to another. A sampling of these issues are addressed below. Whatever your situation, we highly recommend that you get help from an academic advisor on your current campus (if you have one) and the campus and department to which you plan to transfer. Course Transfer and How To Do It "Course transfer" is the process that happens when a student completes a course or courses at one institution (or distance education provider) and has those credits applied to their course record at another institution (or provider). If you want to do this, you must furnish the admission (or registrar's) office of your transfer institution with an official written record (called a "transcript") of course-work previously taken and ask that the credits be evaluated for transfer. The transfer institution will then inform you which of the credits are transferrable (and if not, why not), and how they are being accepted. For example, some of the credits may be applied to the institution's "general education requirements" (which must be completed by all students); yet others may be accepted as "electives" (courses that you may apply to your degree program in any way they fit).
