Lesson Plans and Classroom Activities about Oregon Home State by State Lesson Plans - Alabama Lesson Plans Alaska Lesson Plans Arizona Lesson Plans Arkansas Lesson Plans ... Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. Geography and Climate

Major geological differences divide the state into three distinct bands running north and south.
The coastal region consists of a narrow band of headlands, rainforests and bird-flocked estuaries. Bordered on the west by the sea and on the east by the Coast Range mountains, it is an area of high, surf-battered cliffs fragrant with the smell of cedar, rain-drenched firs and sea salt.
The Willamette Valley hosts the eastern wall of the Coast Range and the western wall of the Cascade Mountains. Snow-fed streams flow down from theses ranges to form the river for which the valley is named. It is a place of rolling prairies containing some of the richest soil on earth.
The High Desert is rich with lava lands, fossil beds and at our eastern border, Hells Canyon. Much of the land in this area is used for crops such as apples, wheat and potatoes.

Geography
In some towns, you have to drive for hours to take a peaceful walk in the woods or experience the serenity of an afternoon lolling on a riverbank, but in Oregon, Illinois, you are only minutes away from picturesque landscapes, verdant forests, rocky cliffs, and the meandering Rock River. Terrain The Rock River begins in southern Wisconsin and flows south through Rockford, meandering west through Oregon, passing by Grand Detour and ending in the Quad Cities area where it empties into the Mississippi River. The Rock River boasts some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the state. Along its banks lies some of Oregon's popular natural attractions and recreation areas including Lowden State Park , filled with deep, dark forests, and Lowden-Miller State Forest , 2,225 acres offering hiking, backpacking, birding, hunting and cross-country skiing, and Castle Rock State Park , with trails to the "top of the rocks." Castle Rock, named for its large outcropping of sandstone, is one of the few places in Illinois where the sandstone is exposed at the surface. A diversity of natural environments is found here including ravines, upland and floodplain forests, prairie, streams, and sandstone outcrops.

Sponsored by the Department of Geography and the Institute of Behavioral Research Renewed immigration to the United States is prompting a fundamental ethnic and racial restructuring of American society. Indeed, some observers claim that the U.S. will become a "minority majority" country in a few short decades a projection that stimulates much social and political anxiety. Traditional immigration gateways (e.g., California and New York especially their major cities, Los Angeles and New York) have struggled to respond to rapidly changing demographics. Immigration affects almost every aspect of society in these contexts; from housing and labor markets to cultural identities and inter-group conflicts. While research and policy communities have attempted to address the impact of renewed immigration on communities in gateway states, immigration increasingly impacts non-traditional destinations, as convincingly demonstrated by Census 2000. Small communities across the country are experiencing dramatic demographic changes, and the economic, political and social changes that follow. The pace of these changes challenges our conventional understanding about the causes and consequences of immigration. This miniconference seeks to bring together scholars from multiple disciplines interested in immigration and ethnicity in the United States. Our intent is to transcend some of the disciplinary boundaries in order to induce fresh thinking about immigration and ethnicity in the U.S. As a starting point for our discussions, we offer the following hypothesis: the nature of immigration and its impacts are conditioned in important ways by the geographic context(s) in which it occurs. We conceive of geographic context at multiple scales, ranging from the body (e.g., multi-ethnic individuals), to neighborhoods to cities to states and regions. As immigration increasingly characterizes non-traditional destinations, we need new ways of theorizing and studying the processes and their outcomes.
