Oregon: Exempting Churches from Land-Use Laws
Should churches be allowed to ignore the same land-use laws that all other property owners have to abide by? That's exactly what some churches want and, in Oregon, that's what some state politicians want to have happen. A bill passed the House exempting religious institutions from many zoning regulations. The Oregonian reports: The measure dealing with churches, House Bill 3474, faces difficult prospects in the Democratic-led Senate after all but one Democrat Rep. Betty Komp of Woodburn opposed it in the House.
The bill was sponsored by Rep. Mac Sumner, R-Molalla, an elder in the Molalla Christian Church. The church has been trying for years to build a new church on farmland outside the city's urban growth boundary.
