Chemawa Indian School
Established in February 1880 as the Training School for Indian Youth, the Chemawa school for Indians is an off-reservation boarding school located in Oregon that serves tribes throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. At the time of its founding in Forest Grove, Oregon, the school offered Indians the opportunity to earn an education and assimilate into mainstream society. Over time, however, its primary goal became providing training in vocational skills that would serve graduates both on and off the reservation. Fire destroyed most of the original school in 1885, which prompted a move to a new location at Chemawa, Oregon, and the renaming of the facility. Students took an active role in rebuilding and caring for the school, and by 1922 enrollment had climbed to over one thousand students. In 1927, Chemawa became a fully accredited four-year high school. Chemawa's focus has changed in the past century. It began as a coercive and authoritarian institution, became vocationally oriented in the early twentieth century, and later tried to incorporate native traditions into a general academic curriculum. Though initially unpopular with native students, Chemawa has survived various attempts by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to close it, thanks mainly to the support of Northwest tribes who have taken pride in the school's accomplishments and for whom it assumed an important role in the education of their children.

BOARDING SCHOOL GHOST I have alot of stories that I believe involve ghosts but the ones that most stick out in my mind are the ones that occured while attending boarding school in Oregon. The school had an older site where the school used to be with a graveyard but had been closed down. It's been said that some of the schools' dorms had ghosts but I didn't listen too well to those stories until I started having my own experiences. Here are some of them. In my freshman year late one night my roommate and I were going to sleep, about five minutes after getting into bed we heard this noise, like paper crumbling towards the foot of the bunk bed, it wasn't that loud. When I first heard it I thought it was her and vice versa. As time went on the noise got louder and louder. I started to get scared because we didn't know where the noise was coming from as there was nothing at the foot of the bed. I suggested we start praying. The noise finally went away after that. The next morning we looked under the bed and on the floor but could not find where the noise from the previous night had been coming from. It became an almost nightly occurence. My roommate Gloria and I started to sleep together because we were so scared. We did not tell the matrons or anyone else. The noises finally went away. We were so glad. Since the noise had finally went away Gloria decided she was going to stay the night in her friends room but she said she would find someone to sleep in the room with me. The other girl went right to sleep upon getting in bed. I myself couldn't sleep I stayed awake for maybe 30 mins when I heard a knocking noise three times on this dresser beside me. It knocked four times and stopped when I started praying. After the noise stopped I opened the door to the hallway so I wouldn't be so scared when I layed back down I saw what appeared to be a dark shadow go by the door. I didn't want to wake the other girl so I ran out the door and down the hall to the matrons office but did not tell her about what had just happened. Since we already knew they did not believe the dorms to be haunted. The next day Gloria said she wouldn't stay the night anywhere else after that.

Crane Union High is unique.
It serves the largest school district in Oregon, a whopping 7500 square miles in the southeastern high desert. Yet so sparse is the population, that this whole area generates a student body of fewer than 100 kids.
"Three Days at Crane” is not a definitive study, but rather a “snapshot” of student life in and around the school. And far from drawing conclusions, this program probably raises more questions than it answers. But it’s fascinating. It celebrates the character and personality of these kids. It’s an entertaining – and sometimes riveting – look at a cross-section of rural young people, a group of Oregonians that is virtually unknown to most urban folks. These are great kids, interesting kids, and their faces and words will stick with you long after this show is over.

Oregon Republicans Wish for a Republican President
We've been waiting for you. Day by day it gets harder to ignore that whatever President Bush is, he's not a member of the old-school Republican party. Of course, mentioning that in public will get you kicked out of the GOP, but you can look forward to a new membership in the Order of the Shrill. New state GOP group supports Kerry The party has "been taken over by right-wing conservatives who don't represent the mainstream values of the American people anymore," he said in a statement. [...] Lee Coleman was a member of the state Republican Central Committee, the party's ruling body, until it became public in June that he would no longer support Bush. At that point, Coleman said, he was pressured to leave several Republican positions he held. Coleman once headed the Oregon affiliate of a group of gay Republicans, and he said his final break with the president came when Bush called for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

Search: News Indian Gaming In The Hoop Home News Headlines printer friendly version BIA student struggles familiar ground for Anderson Thursday, March 18, 2004 Bureau of Indian Affairs head Dave Anderson is making his first official visits to some of the schools his agency oversees this week in hopes of spreading a positive message to Native students. The visits are familiar territory for the new assistant secretary, who founded organization dedicated to helping Native youth develop leadership skills. "I want to impress upon them what I have learned: that positive thinking and health life choices can empower one to build a life based on hope for a better future," he said yesterday after his first meeting. Yesterday, Anderson went to the Sherman Indian High School in Riverside, California, an off-reservation boarding school with an enrollment of 643 students. Today, he is headed to the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon, another off-reservation boarding school with an enrollment of 318 in grades 9 through 12. The visits were timed with an education meeting that took place in San Diego but they come as the BIA is under intense scrutiny for the death of a student at Chemawa. Cindy Gilbert Sohappy, 16, died of alcohol poisoning after being placed in a holding cell by school staff. The FBI is investigating and members of Congress are trying to determine whether BIA policies played a role.
