The Associated Press , April 24, 1999 American Indians Describe School Beatings
By Matt Kelley WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) It was the beating she didn't get that still haunts Joyce Burr. She and several friends were hiding from a dormitory matron in the coat room of the Wahpeton Indian School. They peeked from behind the coats as the enraged matron, herself an Indian, caught up with an older Chippewa girl named Judy Karvonen. ``That's the worst beating I've ever seen. That woman used coat hangers and everything on her,'' said Burr, a Turtle Mountain Chippewa/Oglala Sioux. ``You can imagine not trying to move, trying not to make a sound, when you're seeing that.'' Burr was just one of thousands of American Indian children sent to boarding schools run by the government or by Christian denominations. The coat room beating was just one of thousands administered in the name of keeping order, of crushing Indian identity, of immersing Indian children in white American society. Today, about 10,000 Indian children are enrolled in the schools, though their mission has changed. Burr herself had suffered through plenty of thrashings at Wahpeton, where she lived from 1952 to 1959. Dormitory workers beat her for climbing trees, or for not making her bed quickly enough.

ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN PARENTING PRIVATE SCHOOL BOOM PAGE 1 OF 4 private school education ain't what it used to be. Yes, private schools are still generally safer, more academically rigorous and claim with some justification to provide better preparation for life in the Ivy League. The difference is that, at least in boarding schools, life has gotten, well, more colorful. Foxcroft is a small all-girl's boarding school in Middleburg, Virgnia. "Boarding schools are perceived to be attended by blue-blooded New England types," says Anthony J. DeFazio, publicist for the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). "The reality is, since the mid-1980s, international students and students of other ethnic backgrounds have made big gains in boarding schools." NAIS statistics for 1996, the latest available year, put non-White enrollment at about 21% of the total boarding school populations. The trend is clear, according to Heather Loerle, Associate Director for the Association of Boarding Schools, a NAIS affiliate. In the current economic situation, "If anything grows a few percentage points, you start taking notice," says Hoerle.

From David T. Scalera, aka Looks Away, American Indian prisoner
.... I wanted to sit down a few minutes and tell you a little about myself and give you some background on my case for Break the Chains.... I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, so I thought I'd give you an overview and anything you wanted form there. I would be happy to answer any questions. I was born to an Arapaho Indian father and a Scottish mother in 1977. My father went to prison not long after I was born and my mother died when I was young. My twin sister and I moved in with my Grandmother who was full-blooded Arapaho Indian and the elder in our family. My Grandma grew up in the boarding school era which was a very bad time for our people. The young children were taken off to boarding schools to be de-Indianized. They were beaten for speaking their language and for any other thing considered savage by the 'civilized' society. They took the knowledge of our ceremonies by taking the young children from their families. In these schools they were taught that it is evil to be Indian and many were beaten severely and even sterilized during those times. When I tried to represent myself in other ways as in songs, I was told (not by inmates, but by cops) to stop singing because I was disturbing the peace of the tier. When I put on a headband, I received a disciplinary report and was told not to wear one because it caused a gang issue. I was told not to wear my medicine bag because the thong was a security threat. This entire time, services have been provided for Christians of every faith, Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, etc...as well as Jews, Muslims, and every other group. What really got me is the fact that crosses and other medallions were sold on the canteen with chains to go around the neck, but our leather thongs represent a hazard. When there was more than one Indian on a unit, if you were seen participating in any activity such as circling up on the yard to sing some songs or pass a feather to pray, we were split up again. Our feathers were disrespected and many were broken during cell searches.

The Oregon State Archives, Secretary of State, 800 Summer St NE, Salem will host in its gallery the exhibit: They Sacrificed for Our Survival: The Indian Boarding School Experience April 14 - May 8, 2000. Federal Indian policy makers in the late 1800s and early 1900s sought to use the schoolhouse -specifically the boarding school- as an instrument for acculturating Indian youth to "American" ways of thinking and living. Only by removing Indian children from their homes for extended periods of time, policy makers reasoned, could white "civilization" take root while childhood memories of "savagism" gradually fade to the point of extinction. The attempted eradication of Indian cultures is still a source of pain for many American Indians. This exhibit introduces a subject little known outside American Indian communities. The stories of Indian boarding school survivors are told in the oral tradition of their ancestors and through historical photographs and student artwork dating from the late 1800s through the 1950s. The photographs illustrate several of the large, off-reservation federal schools Carlisle in Pennsylvania, Chilocco in Oklahoma, and Chemawa in Oregon as well as mission schools in Washington and Idaho. Exhibit materials are part of the Estelle Reel Collection at Cheney Cowles Museum in Spokane, Washington.
