sid service print category education headline i'm leaving tha' town Jessica Kaulanaikopokii Patty Jessica, 14, is a freshman at Unity High in Oakland. teaser storytext I'm leaving Oakland to attend a Native American boarding school in Oregon. Oakland is where I grew up, where I live and where I go to school, but it's depressing to stay out here. Oakland is a place of violence. Last June, my cousin, some friends and I were all sitting out on the porch at my cousin’s house in the “dubbs,” which spans the blocks from 20th to 29th Avenue. We were all kickin' it, high and drunk. Then this black car drove by and shot at me. My cousin blocked me and a bullet hit her in the head. I found out later that these two Mexican girls who aren’t from my turf (X3, Surreno) told their people to shoot me after we got in a fight at school. We called the ambulance, but it took so long to get there that we just drove to the hospital. The whole car was filled with blood. When we got there they didn’t want to help my cousin because she was wearing too much red. I started screaming, “F***ing help her!” They finally took her to the emergency room. Ten minutes later, they came out and said she was dead. Ever since my cousin’s funeral, my life has changed. I am now doing positive things instead of getting into fights all the time. I got involved in a youth fellowship program where we go on field trips and learn about Native American and African American culture, I joined Native American youth organizations like Seventh Native American Generation (SNAG) Magazine, and an after-school anger management program at the Native American Health Center.

Private vs. Public Schools: What's the Difference?
(Page 1 of 3) Your goal is to find a school that will meet your child's needs. But how do you choose between a public school and a private school? By Victoria Thorp and Jesse James, GreatSchools.net Staff
    Cost
Public schools cannot charge tuition. They are funded through federal, state and local taxes. When you pay your taxes, you are paying for your child's education and the education of other children in your community. Private schools cost money. Private schools do not receive tax revenues, but instead are funded through tuition, fundraising, donations and private grants. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the median tuition for private day schools in the United States is close to $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $13,000 for grades 6 to 8 and $15,000 for grades 9 to 12. The median tuition for boarding schools is $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $27,000 for grades 6 to 9, and $28,000 for grades 9 to 12. Parochial schools generally charge somewhat less.

Oregon Historical Quarterly , Fall 2000 Related Stories he legacy of Native education in America is tinged with suffering, bitterness, and trauma. In 2000, the Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Kevin Gover, likened BIA's past treatment of western tribes to "ethnic cleansing." He offered a formal apology on behalf of his agency for pursuing an historic goal of "destroying all things Indian." "Worst of all," he remarked, "(the BIA) committed these acts against the children entrusted to its boarding schools, brutalizing them emotionally, psychologically, physically, and spiritually." He promised it would never happen again. One of the first of these boarding schools was the Forest Grove Indian Industrial and Training School, established in Oregon in 1880. Today, almost 125 years later, it is still operating on 400 wooded acres in Salem as the Chemawa Indian School. Home to 410 teenagers from 21 states, it has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating boarding school in the United States.

    Boarding Program for Troubled Teen?
March 2005 We have a troubled relative who is 13, and out of control. Her immediate family is from out of the country and is not equipped to deal with her current problems, which range from drug use and stealing to dangerous boyfriends and cutting herself, and regularly dissappearing. We have already called the police and Child Protective Services, there is not much they say they can do at this point and we want to see if we can find a safe place for her to be contained, such as a boarding school that would be affordable and effective for us. Please let us know if you know of any schools, camps, programs, or even group homes that would be a good option for us (she has MediCal, and her mother is on Disability). Many thanks for your help. my advice the the family with the ''out of control teen'' is to look on line for therapeutic boarding schools. ''The ASpen group'' is a great network of schools for troubled kids. My son went to Stone Mountain school for boys. It helped him a lot. They have a school for girls in Arizona i think. Good luck. mom of troubled kid

The Associated Press , April 24, 1999 Abuse in American Indian Boarding Schools
Reflections of former students: ABUSE ``There was one fella (a dorm attendant) that was having mental health problems, and they sent him to the school to get him out of the way. Anyway, he would have these psychotic episodes and hear voices, and he would just come out of his room in the middle of the night and randomly pick people out and whip them severely for no reason.'' Peter Campbell, Colville/Coeur d'Alene, who attended two Roman Catholic boarding schools in Washington and Idaho in the 1950s. ``Our (dorm) matron, she would spank us real hard on the rear, put us over this old-fashioned laundry tub, and just spank the hell out of us. It got to the point where it didn't bother us, so she would use her high heels. She would start slapping your face, hitting us until we cried. We learned to start crying so she would stop. Someday I'd like to confront her and talk to her about what she did to us.'' Ethel Sales, Navajo, who attended a Christian Reformed mission school in Rehobeth, N.M.
