Issue Date: October 3, 2004 Gardening Easy indoor orchids You can grow these beauties if you simulate their environment. By Fran Sorin For years, I didn't have orchids in my home. Although the orchid family is one of the largest plant families (with more than 20,000 species), I found the prospect of growing them daunting. But a few years ago, I was in a Home Depot store when I spotted some beautiful white-and-purple orchids that were just beginning to bloom. The price was right: They were on sale for $6.99 each. This was a no-lose proposition even if they lasted only a few weeks, it was as inexpensive as buying a bouquet of flowers. Today, I'm an avid orchid lover and grower. Part of the reason I've had success with them is that I limit myself to easy-to-grow orchids, and I try to mimic their native tropical habitat when it comes to light, water, temperature and nutrients.

These four orchids are elegant, easy to grow, and in bloom now * GIVEN THEIR GLAMOROUS APPEARANCE AND CONSIDERABLE CACHET, ORCHIDS make impressive gifts. Their thick, waxy flowers last four to six weeks, often longer. Their length of bloom makes them a good value for the price-$28 to $45 for a 4- to 6-inch pot is typical. But that's not the end of it. The orchids described here and on page 62 make good house or patio plants-no steamy hothouse environment is necessary to keep them happy With reasonable Care, they'll bloom again next winter and for years to come. Oncidiums, cymbidiums, phalaenopsis, and zygopetalums are widely available now in nurseries, florist shops, and even supermarkets. Oncidium Cymbidium Continue article Advertisement
The first cymbidiums to bloom are miniatures, which top out at 2 feet. They do well indoors in warm, sunny spots like south- or west-facing windows.

Orchid cultivation gains momentum in region
Satish Narula
Growing orchids is easy G ARDENING enthusiasts of this region have tremendously contributed to horticulture by introducing and then successfully growing a range of plants that were ordinarily not cultivated in our climatic conditions. Take orchids. Their cultivation is gaining momentum in this region and this is evident from the fact that these spectacular blooms, either single or in bunches, find a place of pride in various decorations. Probably there is no other flower with as much variety of blooms, colours or size. Growing orchids is easy. When you see its spectacular blooms, you end up matching them with a scorpion, a dancing girl, a lady's slipper, a monkey, a spider, a butterfly, a moth or, hold your breath, the horrendous Dracula and many more forms.
