They can be kept indoors year round or may be grown outdoors in a shaded location during the summer and fall months until temperatures start to dip into the low 40's. They should then be brought indoors to a bright location where you can patiently await beautiful sprays of flowers to arrive in early spring. CYMBIDIUM CULTURE These orchids are prized for their sprays of large flowers, used especially as cut flowers or for corsages in the springtime. There are two main types of cymbidiums - standards and miniatures. Where summers are warm (above 90º) only miniatures are recommended, since they are more heat tolerant than standards, and bloom in warmer weather. Unlike many cultivated orchids, cymbidiums are semi-terrestrial plants. They have a growth period in the summer, needing 60º - 85ºF, medium to high light, regular applications of fertilizer and moist potting medium such as fir bark or peat moss. When repotting, soak the potting medium overnight before using. Cool fall nights (to 40º), "bloom-booster" fertilizer or no fertilizer, all induce flowering. Miniature cymbidiums can stand temperatures 5º - 10º higher.

Walter Reed offers some tips on keeping orchids healthy, happy and blooming. Q : I line my garden with orchids. How can I keep them in bloom? A : (from DIY's gardening expert Walter Reeves) The key to getting an orchid to bloom all year long lies in choosing an orchid that's best suited to the conditions in your home. Here's some basic background on different types of orchids and the factors that influence their growth. Figure A Figure B Figure C Growing Medium
    • There are two basic categories of orchids. Those that grow in trees ( figure A ) are called epiphytic orchids. Those that grow on the ground or close to it ( figure B ) are called terrestrial orchids One very popular orchid is the Phaleanopsis . These are typically potted with their roots in a course, quick-draining medium ( figure C ) to mimic the conditions in which it would thrive when growing on tree bark. The quick-draining character of the soil helps replicate the conditions of the short but heavy rains that occur in tropical forests.

Orchids belong to a number of genuses and have very specific cultural requirements.
Dendrobium brymerianum is native to Thailand.
Encyclia cordigera , native to southern Mexico and Central and South America, has a lovely fragrance.
Brassia orchids have spiderlike blooms. Masdevallia orchids are cool-season orchids native to the cloud forests of Mexico and Central and South America. Encyclia vitellina , a cool-season orchid, is native to southern Mexico and Guatemala. Orchids have a reputation for being fussy plants. In order to successfully cultivate them, you must meet their requirements for light, temperature and humidity. But if you provide the proper environment, you'll be rewarded with fabulous blooms. Warm-temperature orchids require medium to strong light, which you can provide by placing them in a southern exposure during the winter and an east-facing window for the rest of the year. The temperature must be kept at 63 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit at night and 75 to 90 degrees during the day. Watering requirements for orchids are very specific. When plants are just approaching dryness, water very heavily from the top of the container, and make sure to water all the way around. It's best to water in the morning so foliage has time to dry during the day. Apply water until it flows freely from all drainage holes.

Like far too many native plants these days, Spiranthes cernua odorata 'Chadds Ford', a native orchid, was discovered just as its habitat was about to be destroyed. Dick Ryan, an eccentric character with a passion for native orchids, found the plant back in the 1960s in a wet ditch near his hometown of Bear, Delaware. At the time, Bear was a rural crossroads town. Today, this former orchid habitat is overrun by tract homes.
It didn't take long for word about Ryan's exquisite discovery to spread. Dr. Merlin Brubacker, a plantsman with a keen interest in tropical orchids, was smitten by this denizen of temperate Delaware. In 1973, a division of the orchid grown by Dr. Brubacker received the coveted Certificate of Cultural Merit from the American Orchid Society.
    Nodding Ladies Tresses
Spiranthes cernua odorata, a fragrant form of the species commonly known as nodding ladies tresses, is found in coastal regions of southeastern states from Virginia to Florida and west to Texas, where it flowers from fall through winter.

When most outdoor gardeners hear “orchid” they automatically think of the tropical species which require a greenhouse or indoor growing. But there is a whole class of orchids known as “hardy terrestrial orchids." These perennials actually survive and thrive in soil and in temperate to more frigid climates. Some of them actually require temperatures at or below freezing for several months each year to maintain proper growth, much like tulips or daffodils. This is not to say that terrestrial orchids can be planted anywhere and expected to grow!

How To Build An Orchid Tree

    Author: Linda Fortner

Published on: February 1, 1999 This month in the Orchid Garden we are going to build an "orchid tree." If you do not have a lot of space or would just like something different, an orchid tree could be your answer. Creating an orchid tree is a very simple five-step process that requires only a few basic tools and supplies, some plants, and a little imagination. Step One: Finding a Tree Click on photo The first thing you need to do is find a suitable branch for your tree. You can go to a nursery and pay for a mounted "driftwood" type branch, but I think it is more fun to go for a walk and see what you can find right around your back yard or in the neighborhood. A branch from a live tree will usually make a good orchid tree. I chose a branch off of my Sycamore tree . Try to find a branch with a rough surface. A branch with smooth surfaces will work, but are not as good because they do not provide the orchid roots something to cling to. The size and shape of the branch is entirely up to you. It can be as small as one foot or as large as 5 feet! Of course, if you are in your neighbors yard, ask first before taking any of their tree branches ;-) Step Two: Assemble the tools and supplies Click on photo This is a list of items you will need to assemble your tree. You can obtain these items from your local hardware and gardening center:

Hyacinth Orchid - Aussie natives in your garden
Presenter: Peter Gunders Thursday, 13 January 2005 Dipodium Punctatum is commonly known as the Hyacinth Orchid, and has wide distribution usually in undisturbed environments. “Another name they could give it is the Australian Christmas Orchid, because it does come out in flower around Christmas time”, Warren says, “Hyacinth Orchid is a good name for it because it just looks like a spike from a Hyacinth bulb. You get a leafless spike that comes out of the ground and then at the top of the stalk you get a lot of Hyacinth type flowers”. “It derives its food from dead and decaying organic matter in the ground. Because of this special mechanism, it’s virtually impossible to cultivate it. I know people have been tempted to dig them up out of the bush, but I’d ask people not to do that, because they certainly won’t survive…This is one plant that is best left in the bush”.
