PLANT OF THE WEEK: Hong Kong Orchid Tree
Presenter: Melissa King [16/07/2005]
Melissa profiles the Hong Kong Orchid Tree.
When this tree is in bloom it's a real showstopper. It's the Hong Kong Orchid Tree and from February to November it's a mass of colour. Bauhinias grow wild in tropical and subtropical regions of the world and this particular variety was found in China. Bauhinia x blakeana is thought to be a chance hybrid between Bauhinia purpurea and B.variegata and it is the official floral emblem of Hong Kong.
Grow Bauhinia in the garden for its flowers alone. From a distance the tree is a mass of colour. Up close, the flowers, which are quite large, resemble orchids or butterflies and they range in colour from yellow through pink to deep purple. The flowers are also perfumed. On most Bauhinias the flowers are followed by long, flat legume like seed pods, which can stay on the plant for months and look a bit untidy, but the Hong Kong Orchid Tree is sterile, so it doesn't produce seed pods.
Another feature of this tree are the unusual bi-lobed or twin-lobed leaves, which are typical of the genus. This tree grows to about 9 metres with a spread of 4.5 metres, so it's good for small gardens. They're deep-rooted plants so they don't like to be transplanted but they will tolerate hot, exposed positions and dry soils. Protection from frost and cold wind is also important. This is a truly spectacular small tree and the flowers are also wonderful cut and brought indoors. With its unusual foliage and attention grabbing flowers, this is a highlight of warm climate gardens.

Gardening with Sarah Other This year there were only very few tulips in bloom. May be the weather was too cold in the winter and many of the bulb died.
  • 2004 Summer Lily garden with me.
The Lilies are producing blossoms but they were not as many and as big as last year. There were a lot of rain lately. Two of the roses died over the winter. The remaining ones are growing as well. The weather had been wet and cold and not much sun. A lot of the healthy leaves from spring had fallen off. For the brief few days that the roses put out some flowers, I was too busy to take pictures. This year when the irises started to bloom I shot a roll of slide in the evening to test it out. The colors are absolutely saturated. Check it out here You may also be interested in the following:

Growing orchids - Cymbidium and Phalaenopsis
Orchids have a reputation for being difficult to grow. However, the most popular, Cymbidium and Phalaenopsis are two of the least demanding.
Cymbidium
Temperature: Flowering: This can occur from November to May with flower spikes lasting roughly eight weeks. Support developing spikes with a cane, and cut them down to 5cm (2in) when blooms have faded. Watering and feeding: From spring to autumn, water from above and allow excess water to drain away; compost should just dry out between waterings. Moderate feeding during the growing season is beneficial. Use a general purpose liquid feed at half strength every third watering. Then use only water the fourth time to ensure that harmful salts are washed out. In winter, reduce the watering and allow plants to dry out for a time. Re-potting:
Phalaenopsis - Moth Orchid
Temperature: Flowering: Flowers can be produced all year round, and last for three months. After flowering the spike can be cut down, if it is healthy, by two nodes (below the top two spent blooms) to produce further flowers.

home: parks: national orchid garden National Orchid Garden National Orchid Garden The National Orchid Garden, opened on 20 October 1995 by Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, is located on the highest hill in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Three hectares of carefully landscaped slopes provide a setting for 60,000 orchid plants comprising of 400 species and more than 2,000 hybrids. The distinctive feature of the National Orchid Garden is its design concept which presents the display of plants in four separate colour zones over most of its areas :the "spring" zone with its prevailing colours of bright and lively shades of gold, yellow and creams; the "summer" zone with its major tones of strong reds and pinks; the "autumn" zone of matured shades; and the "winter" zone of whites and cool blues. The colour zonation is achieved by a careful blend of selected trees, shrubs, herbs and orchids (mostly hybrids) with matching foliage and floral colours. Other attractions within the National Orchid Garden are the VIP Orchid Garden showcasing outstanding orchids from the Botanic Gardens named after State Visitors and VIPs from within and outside Singapore; the Tan Hoon Siang Misthouse featuring orchids display against a backdrop of cultural decor and the Yuen-Peng McNeice Bromeliad collection with its display of over 20,000 plants representing over 800 types in the Pineapple family and the new soon-to-be-opened Orchid Cool House featuring plants from the cooler tropical highlands. This new feature will extend the range of orchid species that can be displayed in the National Orchid Garden.

Dividing and repotting orchids
Healthy orchids can easily become pot-bound, with their tentacle-like roots becoming very tangled. Don't worry about overhanging roots - these are aerial roots and don't mean the plant is pot-bound.
In this article
When to divide and repot Compost Step by step Aftercare
Pseudobulbs
One of the most popular and easy-to-care-for species of orchids is the cymbidium. Cymbidiums and many other orchids produce pseudobulbs from which new growth emerges. The pseudobulbs act as storage organs for water and nutrients, helping the plant survive drought. Phalaenopsis and other species that do not produce pseudobulbs can also be divided, although this is more complex.
When to divide and repot
If your orchid is looking too big for its pot and you can spot three or more pseudobulbs, it may be a good idea to repot. Always do this at the beginning of a new growth cycle. Some growers say never to divide with less than four pseudobulbs because it can inhibit flowering. Growth cycles can vary, even within one species, so you may wish to consult a specialist book or garden centre. For cymbidiums the best time is every two years in the spring, after flowering.

Orchids
There's a huge range of spectacular orchids, many of which can be easily grown on a sunny windowsill, while others prefer steamy hothouse conditions. To get a quick grasp of what orchids are like, here is some basic information.
In this article
General facts Groupings Leaves and flowers Recommended varieties ... Where to see them
General facts
Orchids became the ultimate luxury item and status symbol in Victorian times, when collectors became increasingly obsessive and plant hunters were sent around the world looking for new kinds. The orchid family includes 20,000 to 30,000 species, and more than 70,000 hybrids or cultivars. The largest number, and often the most popular, come from Asia. This is the home of Paphiopedilum sukhakulii , the striking slipper orchid. South America is also especially rich in wild orchids, but they can be found in any conditions almost anywhere except the polar regions.
