Growing orchids - Odontoglossum and Paphiopedilum
Odontoglossum
The tiger orchids need a shady position in summer, but require a good level of light in winter to induce flowering. Temperature: A minimum night temperature of 10-15° C (50-60 o F) is required. Flowering: Plants normally produce a single flower spike, although larger plants may produce several. Peak flowering time is autumn/winter and late spring. Flowers last for five to seven weeks. Watering and feeding: Allow the compost to almost dry out between waterings (more so in winter). Feed from March to September. Apply a general purpose liquid feed at half strength with three waterings, then water only the fourth time. Stand plants on an upturned saucer in a tray of damp pebbles to provide humidity. Re-potting: Pot on between February to April or September to October, using a specialist orchid compost. Do not over pot, choose a pot just large enough to contain the roots. Larger plants can be divided, but resent frequent root disturbance.

Acidanthera bicolor - Peacock Orchid
List of files and visuals associated with this text. Peacock orchid is related to the gladiolus, not orchids. The plant requires a longer growing season than gladiolus. Planting in large groups is most effective and flowers are good for cutting. A sunny growing area with light well- drained soil is best. Water generously except when plants flower or after blooming. The plants grow 18 to 30 inches tall and bloom in late summer and early fall. Plant corms three inches deep and six inches apart in the spring. Dig and clean the corms in the fall after the foliage matures. Store the corms in dry sand at temperatures above 60 degrees.

... Site Map Barbara Andrewjeski, 43, of Mosinee Wisconsin, was inspired to start gardening while driving by thousand of orchids on her way to visit her husband in the hospital. Today, she has more than 2000 plants. Barbara finds gardening to be a spiritual endeavor for her,"When I visited that greenhouse while my husband was in the hospital, I was a bit of a mess... I was having a hard time watching my husband go through this elective surgery. We were not in my hometown so that made things even more difficult. When I entered the greenhouse and saw all that beauty, it was as if God had reached down and put His arms around me and whispered to me... 'See what I have created for you to enjoy I love you and I love your husband too. I will take care of you.' I was so overcome that I sat down between the benches of plants and wept. Since then, I have considered them to be a special token of His love for me..." Although I got my first orchid plant over 20 years ago, I began orchid gardening avidly just over 3 years ago. My husband was in the hospital to donate a kidney and I drove by this place called "Orchids By the Ackers" every morning and evening back and forth to the hospital. Finally one morning I went in a little later and stopped by there on the way... It was wonderful... thousands of orchids in bloom... I was overcome by all the beauty. Needless to say, I have been back many times since and bring my friends whenever I can.

Exotic Orchids Gallery!

, servant to 300 orchids Text and photos by Diana Lundin A phalaeonopsis, such as this pink one, is among the easiest orchid to grow. They're exotic, beautiful, mysterious and have a reputation for being more demanding than a pop star diva. To some, they are the object of addiction, while to others they are the object of frustration. But in spite of all their idiosyncratic ways, or maybe because of them, orchids are something to admire. And to grow. There are some 30,000 to 40,000 species of orchids, which have been hybridized to create thousands more. Typically, some of the genera you'll most likely hear about are cattleya, phalaenopsis, dendrobiums, epidendrum, paphiopedilums, miltonias, miltoniopsis, odontoglossum, oncidium and vanda. All will take a little bit of effort to know them and grow them, especially getting them to bloom again once the flowers are spent, but growers consider the cattleyas, phalaenopsis and dendrobiums among the easiest to force a bloom. "All the orchids like humidity," says Manuel Torres, manager of Sanders Nursery in Camarillo, Calif. where the humidity is palpable in the greenhouse. While it may not be practical to layer your floors with gravel and watering the rocks with a hose, like Torres does at Sanders, it is possible to raise the humidity by placing your orchid on a saucer of gravel and keeping the pebbles wet.

Visiting an Orchid Garden
The Seasoned Gardener : Episode SGN-407

A bit of color and a hint of the tropics are in many gardeners' dreams during winter. If you're one of them, you're in luck: this is a great time to grow orchids. These gorgeous plants have an undeserved reputation for being difficult to grow. The fact is, many hardier varieties can be planted right now in some of the warmer zones or can be grown indoors any time of the year. With more than 20,000 varieties in the world, a tour of an established garden is a good place to get some ideas for your home. Master gardener Chris Dawson visits the Orchid Society of America in Delray, Florida. Orchids grow well in this climate in Zone 10, which experiences an average annual low of 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Orchids
Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-709

"One of the biggest myths within the world of gardening is that orchids are impractical, expensive and next-to-impossible to grow," says master gardener Paul James. "It's just not so."
Figure A
Figure B As the world's largest flowering plant family, orchids come in all sizes and shapesfrom the big and bold ( figure A ) to extremely small ( figure B ). And did you know that the intense fragrance of some orchids can fill an entire room? Discover the truth about these exotic and misunderstood flowers from orchid specialist Carson Barnes:
  • Myth #1: Orchids require greenhouse conditions to grow properly. While Barnes grows his orchids in a greenhouse, you can grow orchids in your home. "The kind of climate that orchids like is very similar to the kind of climate we like," says Barnes. "A bit of humidity in the air, enough light, a drink of water from time to time and the kind of temperature we enjoy in our homes." Figure C
  • Myth #2: Orchids are expensive.
