Distribution: Orangutans live in Indonesian Borneo, Malaysian Borneo, and northern Sumatra. In prehistoric times Orangutans were on the Asian mainland. Each island has a sub-species. top Habitat: Orangutans are usually found in tropical montane forest, tropical peat swamp forest and tropical heath forest. They seem to prefer the lower and mid canopy (20 to 100 feet off the ground). top Description: Orangutans have coarse, long hair that varies in color from orange to brown or maroon in adults. Males have a large throat pouch. An infants face darkens with age. top Diet: top Behavior: Unlike most apes, orangutans are considered to be solitary or semi-solitary. Mature males limit their socializing to sexual encounters. Females, however, will travel with their offspring. Females have territories that overlap with their own mothers. Young orangutans have constant physical contact with their mother for the first few years of life. They are born with very few instinctive behaviors, and learn most of what they need to know from their mothers. They usually spend five to six years with their mothers.

n. An arboreal anthropoid ape (Pongo pygmaeus) of Borneo and Sumatra, having a shaggy reddish-brown coat, very long arms, and no tail. [Malay orang hutan orang , man + hutan , wilderness, jungle.]
var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia orangutan ōrăng ʊtăn ) , an ape Pongo pygmaeus, found in swampy coastal forests of Borneo and Sumatra. Highly specialized for arboreal life, it usually travels by grasping branches with hands and feet and moving from tree to tree. Adult males are about 4 ft (1.4 m) tall and weigh up to 180 lbs (82 kg). Their arms are very long, the total span sometimes exceeding 7 ft (2.1 m). Their legs are short and bowed, making ground travel awkward; they walk with a side-to-side shuffle on all fours. The body is rotund and covered with long hair in various shades of red. The face of a young orangutan looks quite human; the name means “forest person” in Malay. Old males usually develop large cheek pads and facial hair that resembles a man's moustache and beard. Enormous throat pouches also develop with sexual maturation, which starts at about age 14. Adult orangutans are basically solitary, except for mother-offspring pairs; however, weaned juveniles sometimes congregate in small groups. Males are aggressive toward each other and fight over females. Individual nests are usually constructed in trees each night. Fruit is a diet mainstay, and orangutans are important seed distributors.

As a fan of Terry Pratchett I have developed an affection for the Orangutan (or people of the forest).
"the orangutan is the sad heap of half deflated inner-tubes you hurry past on the way to the rather more out-going chimpanzees and gorillas." - Terry Pratchett "you are accosted by a red demon with a face like a surprised coconut" - Terry Pratchett A lot of people ignore the Orangutan in order to see the more active apes, only in it's native Borneo can you see the real beauty of this long armed ape. Due to large scale de-forestation they are an endangered species, there are only around 20000 Orangutan's left in the world. Orangutans are the largest aboreal (tree dwelling) animals in the world. They primarily eat fruit but also leaves, flowers, bark and insects such as termites and butterfly larvae. They are unique among primates as they live in semi-solitary social groups. The most stable group is mother and offspring. They are long lived animals reaching ages of up to 50 years or more. T HE L INKS

Male eating (570 KB) Female eating (535 KB) Female taking a drink (288 KB) Orangutans are large apes with long, red hair. They have very long arms that are used for movement in the trees. Its hands and feet are hook-shaped for latching onto branches. They also use their hands to grasp small twigs that they can use as a tool to obtain food and hold food in their hands while they move about. Males are about twice as big as females and have striking flaps on their cheeks. They can make very strong calls by inflating a pouch in their throat, which adds resonance to their call. Orangutans have large brains and exhibit a high level of intelligence. Orangutans can eat a large amount of food. About 60% of their diet consists of fruit, including mangoes, figs, jackfruits, lychees, durians, and rambutans. The other 40% of their diet is made up of leaves, insects, tree bark, and occasionally eggs and small vertebrates. Orangutans live in humid jungles of Borneo and Sumatra. They spend most of the time in the trees, but occasionally move down to the ground.

Overview
The Orangutan robot controller is a complete control solution for small robots. Orangutan includes an 8-character x 2-line liquid crystal display, two bi-directional motor ports, a buzzer, three pushbuttons, and up to 12 user I/O lines, yet the compact module measures only 2.00" x 1.85" and weighs less than 1 ounce. Because of the complete feature set, very few additional components (such as sensors or motors) need to be added to complete the electronic portion of a small robot. The small package allows for greater flexibility in incorporating the electronics into the mechanical design of a robot. Orangutan is based on the Atmel MEGA8 microcontroller, which features 8 Kbytes of flash program memory, 1024 bytes of SRAM, and 512 bytes of EEPROM. Up to 8 channels of 10-bit analog-to-digital conversion is also available. Because the user has direct access to the microcontroller, any development software for Atmel's AVR microcontrollers, including Atmel's free AVR Studio and the GCC C compiler, is compatible with Orangutan. An in-circuit programmer such as Atmel's affordable AVR ISP is required for programming Orangutan. For applications requiring more program memory, the MEGA168 microcontroller with double the program space can be substituted for the MEGA8 microcontroller.

pygmaeus The name Orangutan means "man of the forest" in Malay. The Orangutan is the largest of the tree dwelling apes of Southeast Asia. Orangutans can grow up to five feet tall, but males are usually 4 feet tall and females are 3 feet. They have an arm span of 8 feet when full grown. The adult male orangutan can weigh up to 220 lbs. and an adult female can weigh up to 110 lbs. They are heavily built and their arms arevery long and lanky, but their legs are short and weak. Orangutans have long, thin reddish brown hair. They have a high and sloping forehead and a rounded snout. Males have cheek pads made up of fat which keep on growing as they get older. The big toe on each foot can rotate and touch the ends of the other toes, like our hands. So Orangutans have four "hands". When on the ground, Orangutans walk on all four limbs. Their knees are bent inward and their arms are placed either flat or clenched on the ground. Their calls are whining and squeaking sounds. The adult male makes a long roar- like call. Orangutans are duirnal and feed during the day. At night they build a platform style nest out of branches about 40 to 50 feet above the ground.

Who lives high in the treetops, rarely comes to the ground, and sleeps in a nest? No, it's not a bird, but one of your closest relatives in the animal kingdomthe orangutan of Sumatra and Borneo, who shares 96.4 percent of the same genetic make-up as humans.
These peaceful, red-haired primates spend their days chowing down on fruit, leaves and flowers from trees, along with any stray insects that might be hidden among the foliage. Mom and baby orangs keep busy grooming each other, and then it's early to bed at sunset in a nest of branches.
Because they're larger, the older males are more comfy sleeping on the ground. At close to 200 pounds, they are not only physically bigger than the females, but have different facial features, too. Adult male orangutans have fat, fleshy cheek pads, and moustaches and beards. (But no, they don't have to shave!)

In The Octopus and the Orangutan, Eugene Linden takes readers on another unforgettable journey into the minds and hearts of animals. The Parrot's Lament, his acclaimed previous book, explored the animal intelligence revealed as different creatures negotiated with, fooled, and teased zookeepers, trainers, and each other. Now, in a wide-ranging collection of real-life anecdotes that offer further compelling evidence of animals' higher mental capabilities and their awareness of the needs and feelings of others, Linden goes beyond these everyday encounters and takes us deeper into their minds through this new window on intelligence.

Orangutans - Endangered Species
America Zoo Once found on the territory of southeastern Asia, Orangutans have experienced decline in both numbers and range. This species is now considered endangered and is under protection in its native countries and abroad. Though Orangutan population is hard to estimate in dense forested areas, it is believed that there are about 6,500-7,500 animals in Sumatra and about 12,000-13,000 in Borneo.
Orangutans - Reasons for Population Decline
Extensive hunting for zoo exhibitions and for pets has contributed to population decline. Desire to have this exotic animal in zoos and as pets has led to considerable species destruction. Habitat loss is considered the number one threat for the Orangutan. Massive deforestation for agriculture and timber business is likely to make the species go extinct. According to some scientists, if no serious conservation measures are taken, the population of Orangutans may disappear for good within the period of ten years. Despite the fact that there exist protection laws for the species, deforestation and poaching still occur. This is likely to be connected with the political situation in the areas where the Orangutan is found. The ruling government collapse in the 1990s in these areas has led to anarchy. Law implementation is considered to be extremely difficult.

HISTORY
Modern orangutans originated during the Pleistocene period, 2 million to 100,000 years ago. They now face extinction. At the turn of the last century around 315,000 orangutans existed in the wild. Orangutan numbers are now down by 92% compared with a century ago and have been reduced by half in Northern Sumatra between 1993 and 2000. The orangutan’s ancient origin is not agreed upon. One hypothesis says it originated from Lufengpithecus, while another maintains that they originated from Sivapithecus. The fossil record of the living great apes is poor and the orangutan is the only great ape that has a fossil record linking early forms to later forms (there has never been an African fossil found that is related to chimpanzees or gorillas). However, there is now strong evidence that suggests neither of those species was the ancestor of the orangutan. In a recent discovery (reported in 2002), a team of scientists unearthed a fossil ape (Lufengpithecus chiangmuanensis) in Thailand dating back 10 to 13.5 million years ago. It consists of both an upper and lower jaw with similar dental structure as today’s orangutan and they consider it to be an ancestor of the new form. This discovery would place the development of the earlier orangutan in a similar habitat as today’s tropical forest home on Sumatra and Borneo. More fossils need to be found and studied to complete the picture of its evolutionary history.
