As nighttime approaches in a tropical rain forest in parts of Sumatra and Borneo in Asia, orangutans prepare for sleep. In forks of trees high off the ground, shaggy, red-haired apes bend branches down to form comfortable mattresses of leaves and twigs. They sometimes add a roof built from more branches, so that if it rains they will stay dry.
Equipped with very long, powerful arms and hook-shaped hands and feet, these apes climb and swing from tree to tree with ease. They reach from one tree to the next with their long arms, grasping the next branch with long hands or feet, and swing their bodies across the gap. If a baby following its mother reaches a gap between trees that is too wide for it to navigate, its mother makes a living bridge for the baby to scamper across.

These orangish-red-haired great apes have long arms and curved hands and feet, which they put to good use when traversing the treetops. Older orangutans usually move through the trees on all fours, while young ones often brachiate, or swing hand over hand. Males have longer hair than females and disc-like cheek pads. Both sexes have throat pouches that make their calls resonate through the forest. The males' pouches are more developed. Orangutans crush tough foliage and hard-shelled nuts with their strong teeth and jaws. Two species exist:

About Us Appeals News ... Link to Us ORANGUTAN FACT SHEET The orangutan is Asia's great red ape, and is an endangered species. In the wild, it can only be found on the islands of Northern Sumatra and Borneo, in lowland tropical rainforest areas with complex canopy structures. There are two subspecies of orangutan, the Bornean (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) and Sumatran (P.p. abelii), which are slightly different from one another. The Bornean subspecies is usually darker and the cheek pads are larger than the Sumatran subspecies. The word orangutan is Malay meaning "Man of the Woods"; appropriate, as it is the only truly arboreal (tree dwelling) ape. Its very long arms and hook-shaped hands and feet are adaptations to its arboreal lifestyle. Nests are built in forest canopies at night, for sleeping, made from interwoven branches and leaves. Adult males grow to about five feet and weigh an average of 120kg, while adult females only grow to about four feet and weigh 45kg.
The bulk of an orangutan's diet is fruit, but they also eat bark, leaves, shoots, buds and stems. They have also been known to eat insects such as termites, mineral rich soil, honey and even to steal eggs from nests in the trees.

OuTrop is an independent research and conservation project carrying out in-situ research of orang-utan density and distribution in the tropical peat swamp forests of the Sebangau river catchment, Central Kalimantan. This pioneering work has identified the Sebangau catchment as home to the largest orang-utan population remaining in Borneo and one of only five sustainable populations remaining in the world. OuTrop also undertakes biodiversity studies, forest regeneration studies, illegal logging canal mapping by GIS, and developing community education projects within the Sebangau catchment. We are working with both international and local NGOs to develop strategies for the conservation of the peatswamp forests of the region.

DENVER, Colorado (AP) The Denver Zoo's four orangutans are smelling pretty good these days they're getting daily aromatherapy treatments. That means the 20-year-old ape Mias gets chamomile on his right ear, basil and angelica on his nose, and fennel, eucalyptus and frankincense on his forehead. Keepers says the treatment has helped alleviate symptoms from allergies and an upset stomach. In Allie's case, the 8-year-old primate became depressed when her mother died two years ago. She stopped acting like the silly adolescent she was before her mother's death, but that changed when she started receiving daily aromatherapy. "When you see how goofy they are, this is how it should be," keeper Rhonda Pietsch said as Allie played in her cage after an oil treatment.

Welcome To Orang Utan Life Intro History Rehabilitation Process Galery The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre was established in 1964 to return orphaned "apes back to the wild. The centre was being administered by the wildlife section of the Forestry Department which in 1988 was upgraded as a department under the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Development. All administration and management was given to the new Wildlife Department of Sabah. The objectives of the project have expanded in recent years. While Orangutan rehabilitation is stilt the primary goal at Sepilok, present aims include public education on conservation, research and assistance to other endangered species such as captive breeding of the rare and endangered rhinoceros. This centre is now under the supervision of more than 37 staff, including a Wildlife Officer who is also officer-in-charge of the centre, a veterinary doctor, wildlife rangers and general workers.
