RELATED Science Magazine Gunung Palung Orangutan Project Dr. Cheryl Knott Harvard University Department of Anthropology Cheryl Knott is director of the Gunung Palung Orangutan Project in West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. The Harvard University anthropologist talked to CNN about a report she co-authored in the January 2 edition of Science magazine. CNN: What's the significance of determining that orangutans have culture, and have for 14 million years? KNOTT: Biological anthropologists would argue that culture is an evolved human adaptation. Thus, the question is, when did this evolve? Is it unique to humans? Do we see behaviors in our closest living relatives, the apes, that have cultural aspects to them? If so, under what conditions do these cultural behaviors occur? How are they invented? How are they transmitted? Answering these questions helps us to understand how, when and why full-blown culture evolved in humans. So, basically, the significance is that seeing incipient culture in orangutans helps us to understand how, when and why culture evolved in humans.

Orangutans are large apes that live in southeast Asia (on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra). These apes mostly live in trees (they are arboreal) and swing from branch to branch using their arms.
The word orangutan means "man of the forest" in the Malay language. As its habitats are being usurped by man, the orangutan's population is decreasing and it is in grave danger of extinction.
ANATOMY Orangutans have a large, bulky body, a thick neck, very long, strong arms, short, bowed legs, and no tail. Orangutans are about 2/3 the size of the gorilla Hair They are mostly covered with long reddish-brown hair. The Head The orangutan has a large head with a prominent mouth area. Adult males have large cheek flaps (which get larger as the ape ages). Senses Orangutans have senses very similar to ours, including hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch.

DENVER, Colorado (AP) The Denver Zoo's four orangutans are smelling pretty good these days they're getting daily aromatherapy treatments. That means the 20-year-old ape Mias gets chamomile on his right ear, basil and angelica on his nose, and fennel, eucalyptus and frankincense on his forehead. Keepers says the treatment has helped alleviate symptoms from allergies and an upset stomach. In Allie's case, the 8-year-old primate became depressed when her mother died two years ago. She stopped acting like the silly adolescent she was before her mother's death, but that changed when she started receiving daily aromatherapy. "When you see how goofy they are, this is how it should be," keeper Rhonda Pietsch said as Allie played in her cage after an oil treatment.

Orangutans are large, intelligent, solitary apes that live in southeast Asia (on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra). These apes mostly live in trees (they are arboreal ) and swing from branch to branch using their arms.
Anatomy : Orangutans have a large, bulky body, a large head, a thick neck, very long, strong arms, short, bowed legs, and no tail. They are mostly covered with long reddish-brown hair. Orangutan hands are very much like ours; they have four long fingers plus an opposable thumb. Their feet have four long toes plus an opposable big toe. They vary from 2.6 - 4.5 ft (0.8-1.4 m) tall.
Diet : Orangutans are omnivores (they eat both plants and animals) but are mostly herbivorous (plants comprise most of their diet). They eat fruit (their favorite food), leaves, seeds, tree bark, plant bulbs, plant shoots, and flowers. They also eat insects and small animals (like birds and small mammals). They drink water that has collected in the holes between tree branches.

The only great ape that lives on the Asian continent, the orangutan is found on the Malaysian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Its name means "man of the forest," and it is one of thousands of species of wildlife that live in tropical Asian forests. The orangutan's story is similar to that of a large number of Asian animals: its forest habitat is being rapidly destroyed by conversion to agriculture, both by large commercial plantations and smaller subsistence farms. At the same time, humans are killing the orang's prey species (birds and small mammals) for food and capturing it for the pet trade. here are an estimated 30,000 orangutans left in the wild, about 20,000 on Borneo and 10,000 on Sumatra. Scientists are uncertain whether all orangutans are one species, or whether the Sumatran and Bornean populations have become so isolated from each other that they are two subspecies. (Click here to read more about species and subspecies The great apes include gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans. Of these, orangs are the most arboreal (living in trees). It is rare for an adult orang to ever touch the ground. Their strong hands, handlike feet, and long arms (with a span of up to 8 feet) are supremely adapted to life in the trees. They do not even have to come to the ground to drink they drink the water that collects in tree holes.

The Disenchanted Forest read full text No Exit An illegal pet industry in Indonesia is pushing orangutans to the brink of extinction in the wild The heat of the tropical sun and the smell of sweating bodies pervade the outdoor Jakarta animal market. Amid a cacophony of parrot chatter, the screams of monkeys and the barking of dogs, Willie Smits, dressed to look like a British oilman, and photographer Viviane Moos elbow their way through the crowd. Smits calls out in Indonesian, asking if anyone has orangutans for sale. The sea of people parts and a man appears with a red, furry baby orangutan clinging to his waist. "It's him," shouts one of the men in the crowd, recognizing Smits. As head of the largest orangutan rescue organization in the world, Smits is hated and feared by people who trade in orangutans and other exotic animals. Although it's illegal to own one of these orangy-red apes on the Southeast Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra (their last natural refuges) and in many other places, trade in the primate is brisk. A big-bucks black market breeds violence, to which Smits is no stranger: he and his family frequently receive death threats. Even so, Smits continues to go to markets, confiscate orangutans and help police identify dealers in exotic animals. "Take her camera! Pull the film out. Hit them!" cries one of the men. Smits, 45, sees several others reaching for stilettos in their pockets. "I'll buy it," Smits shouts, momentarily confusing the traders and causing them to back off. Although he doesn't like to encourage the trade by making a purchase, Smits thrusts a stack of rupiah worth about $325 at the man with the orangutan, grabs the quivering animal and pulls Moos with him into the crowd. "You can't come back here again," Smits says to Moos, who has been photographing the whole time. "They could kill you."
