Many years ago, the wild orangutan's range covered Laos, Vietnam, other areas in Asia and smaller islands in the Indian Ocean. The orangutan is now extinct
in these areas and can only be found in the northern areas of Sumatra and on Borneo, Southeast Asia. With a population of approximately 60,000 Bornean orangutans (P.H.V.A. Conference, Jakarta 2004) are not in as immediate danger of extinction as those inhabiting Sumatra , whose population estimates reach only between 4500 and 5400 ecologically extinct in the wild within the next ten years One of the last strongholds of the Sumatran orangutan is a portion of the Gunung Leuser (GL) National Park located in the province of North Sumatra. The Leuser Ecosystem is the largest protected rainforest system in Southeast Asia and home to one of the largest orangutan populations in the world. However, the range, diversity and orangutan populations of this area continue to be diminished by logging and other human activities. Center for Great Apes (Center for Orangutan and Chimpanzee Conservation) The Center for Great Apes, located in Wauchula, Florida, was founded in 1993 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its primary purpose is to provide a permanent sanctuary in a safe and enriching environment for orangutans and chimpanzees in need of long-term life care … specifically those who have been used in entertainment, kept as pets by private owners, or served as research subjects. The Center began as an effort to offer lifetime care for five young apes born at a private breeding facility before they were sold as pets or entertainers, and so far, has additionally taken in thirty-one apes with circus, entertainment, pet, and research backgrounds. Currently, the Center houses

The orangutans' rainforest is being felled for Palm Oil and other crops at an overwhelming rate with the remaining forest being degraded by drought and forest fires. Extinction in the wild is likely in the next 10 years for Sumatran Orangutans and soon after for Bornean Orangutans. We need to recognise the massive amount of suffering being inflicted on a species that is 97% genetically identical to humans. Orangutans are highly intelligent animals. Their intelligence is comparable to that of a five or six year old child. Surely these self-aware animals deserve the right to live and to be free from torture and exploitation? Protecting the orangutan also protects the surrounding ecosystem and myriad of endangered and exotic species. Saving the orangutan saves the forest. "The Orangutan Network is an opportunity to make a concrete contribution to orangutan conservation and the understanding of orangutan local traditions.
The Network strives to:
1. Achieve effective local conservation through a permanent research
presence at active long-term field sites.
2. Document the extent of geographic variation in local traditions among
orangutans, much of which is expected to have a cultural component."

About Think Tank
Think Tank is a place to think about thinking. It combines the appeal of animals with an interactive exploration of the question "What is thinking?" This exhibit looks at cognition in three areas: tools, language, and society. The exhibit goals are to educate visitors about the field and the scientific process, and to build a conservation ethic through the understanding of animals as complex cognitive beings. more Currently, the Zoo has one ongoing research project on orangutan memory, which will be seen at Think Tank. Two young Bornean orangutans arrived at the Zoo at the end of 2004. We have SSP (Species Survival Program) permission to breed them. A second project looking at the development of gestural communication with gorillas will commence with the birth of an orangutan. We have funding to host a research fellow next year, as well as hire a new cognitive biologist for Think Tank. Dr. Rob Shumaker, now at the Great Ape Trust of Iowa, remains a research associate at the Zoo, and we look forward to future collaborations Macaques and Orangutans at Think Tank

The Kinabatangan orangutan Conservation Project (KOCP). (also called Project Hutan) Conducting ongoing studies of the orangutan habitat and population
http://www.orangutan.com/theprojects/Hutan/hutan.htm
The Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Project (KOCP) The Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Project (KOCP) is located in Eastern Sabah, in the country of Malaysia. (Sabah is on the Northern part of the island of Borneo.) The project was initiated in 1998 in an effort to ensure the long-term survival of wild orangutans in habitats that exist in close proximity to local communities in the Kinabatangan floodplain of Eastern Sabah. BOS-USA plans to support many key objectives of this project, which include: Conducting ongoing studies of the orangutan habitat and population There is a unique opportunity in Sabah; the Kinabatangan floodplain is an area of secondary forest that has an enormous and surprising amount of wildlife in it. In other areas of orangutan habitat (in Sumatra, for example), when primary forest has been removed, orangutans have not survived. Here, the orangutans and other wildlife seem to be showing signs of adapting to the changing conditions of their forest. Not much is known about how (and if) orangutans can survive changes in the forest composition after it has been logged. This research is vital to all orangutan conservationists, as it will give us valuable insight into the long term chances of survival for orangutans living in or near secondary forest and forest fragments. Developing community outreach and awareness programs, and most importantly, involving the community
