Oppositional Defiant Disorder
All children are oppositional from time to time, particularly when tired, hungry, stressed or upset. They may argue, talk back, disobey, and defy parents, teachers, and other adults. Oppositional behavior is often a normal part of development for two to three year olds and early adolescents. However, openly uncooperative and hostile behavior becomes a serious concern when it is so frequent and consistent that it stands out when compared with other children of the same age and developmental level and when it affects the child's social, family, and academic life. In children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), there is an ongoing pattern of uncooperative, defiant, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that seriously interferes with the youngster's day to day functioning. Symptoms of ODD may include:

As with Conduct Disorder the main features observed are persistent disobedience and opposition to authority figures (such as parents, teachers or other adults). However the basic rights of others are still respected and age appropriate societal rules and behaviour are not violated. Characterised by negative, hostile and defiant behaviour, generally strongest in the home. Before puberty the disorder is more frequently found in males than females, after puberty the ratio equals out. Outward behaviour includes irritability, temper outbursts, frustration and intolerance. The child’s self-esteem is usually low (although child may project an image of “toughness”). Additional symptoms of anxiety and depression are also common.
Only to be considered Oppositional Defiant Disorder if at least of the following behaviours occurred over a period of at least 6 months, in home or school

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
Disruptive disorders, such as oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, are characterized by antisocial behavior and, as such, seem to be a collection of behaviors rather than a coherent pattern of mental dysfunction. These behaviors are also frequently found in children who suffer from attention-deficit/hyper-activity disorder, another disruptive disorder.
Children who develop the more serious conduct disorders often show signs of these disorders at an earlier age. Although it is common for a very young children to snatch something they want from another child, this kind of behavior may herald a more generally aggressive behavior and be the first sign of an emerging oppositional defiant or conduct disorder if it occurs by the ages of 4 or 5 and later. However, not every oppositional defiant child develops conduct disorder, and the difficult behaviors associated with these conditions often disappear. Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is diagnosed when a child displays a persistent or consistent pattern of defiance, disobedience, and hostility toward various authority figures including parents, teachers, and other adults. ODD is characterized by such problem behaviors as persistent fighting and arguing, being touchy or easily annoyed, and deliberately annoying or being spiteful or vindictive to other people. Children with ODD may repeatedly lose their temper, argue with adults, deliberately refuse to comply with requests or rules of adults, blame others for their own mistakes, and be repeatedly angry and resentful. Stubbornness and testing of limits are common. These behaviors cause significant difficulties with family and friends and at school or work. Oppositional defiant disorder is sometimes a precursor of conduct disorder.

Chances are that if you are a new parent to this site you probably aren't having a great parenting day.
Come in, familiarize yourself to our site, ask questions and read our stories.
We are a group of parents who are raising challenging children. Our kids have many different diagnoses, but all of them are oppositional and resistant to parenting.
We use many different methods and treatment plans with a variety of results. We have found that there isn't a "magic bullet," but we are always looking and supporting each other along this journey. We are parents who are committed to helping our children grow and flourish and survive their childhood.
It is our goal for our web site to be a "soft place to land for the battle-weary parent." You will be amazed at the number of suggestions offered and the amount of support given. We even manage to have a few laughs along the way! My advice is to take what you need, offer what you can, and leave the rest.
Please make sure you visit the recommended book section, as most of these books have been read by many parents who have found them to be extremely valuable. You can also have these shipped direct to your home from this web site.

Virginia Students Petition for Drug Testing
"It's not unique to Virginia to have kids talking about, supporting and being vocal about wanting a drug-testing program in their school ," said Scott Burns, deputy director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. "Kids want to go to a drug-free school." Washington Times Article
First Check
"It's just Pot ." Many parents take this approach when thinking about drug use among today's youth. They think that because they did it and turned out OK that their kid will too. That may or may not be the case. Think back for a moment about growing up, your friends at school, kids in your neighborhood. We can all think of someone who was smart, talented, lots of fun but ended up ruining their life as a result of abusing drugs and alcohol. Don't let that be your kid. First Checks home drug testing kit reduces that risk. It is a tool for both a parent and a child.
