  • CHILDREN WITH OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER All children are oppositional from time to time, particularly when tired, hungry, stressed or upset. They may argue, talk back, disobey, and defy parents, teachers, and other adults. Oppositional behavior is often a normal part of development for two to three year olds and early adolescents. However, openly uncooperative and hostile behavior becomes a serious concern when it is so frequent and consistent that it stands out when compared with other children of the same age and developmental level and when it affects the child's social, family, and academic life. In children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), there is an ongoing pattern of uncooperative, defiant, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that seriously interferes with the youngster's day to day functioning. Symptoms of ODD may include:

Frequently Asked Questions Back to The ODD Page Home Email your question to Dr. Sutton Exactly what is ODD? ... Are there any other conditions that can be associated with ODD? Exactly what is ODD? Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a diagnosed condition of negativistic, hostile and defiant behavior that includes symptoms of low frustration tolerance, argumentativeness, defiance, noncompliance, oppositionality, provocation, blaming, spitefulness, irritability, resentment, anger or vindictiveness. (Not all need to apply for a diagnosis to be made.) How is ODD diagnosed? ODD is diagnosed by an appropriately certified or licensed health service professional that assesses a youngster and makes the diagnosis as it pertains to established criteria. The most commonly used criteria are found in the most current edition of a book entitled, The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. What is the difference between an ODD child and a youngster who is just stubborn? Stubborn youngsters know when to give it up. They don't continue with their stubbornness to the degree and point that it creates serious hardships for them. Stubbornness can even be an attribute, such as a resolve that can shine through in tough times. Not so with ODD, which, by nature of being a disorder, works against the child's best interest. What is the difference between ODD and ADD?

Children and adolescents with ODD are more distressing or troubling to others than they are distressed or troubled themselves.
    What causes oppositional defiant disorder?
While the cause of ODD is not known, there are two primary theories offered to explain the development of ODD. A developmental theory suggests that the problems begin when children are toddlers. Children and adolescents who develop ODD may have had a difficult time learning to separate and become autonomous from the primary person to whom they were emotionally attached. The "bad attitudes" characteristic of ODD are viewed as a continuation of the normal developmental issues that were not adequately resolved during the toddler years. Learning theory suggests, however, that the negativistic characteristics of ODD are learned attitudes, reflecting the effects of negative reinforcement techniques used by parents and authority figures. The use of negative reinforcement by parents is viewed as increasing the rate and intensity of oppositional behaviors in the child as it achieves the desired attention, time, concern, and interaction with parents or authority figures.

    What is it?
Remember when your child was going through the "terrible two's"? Did that stage seem to continue as your child got older? Children and adolescents with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or ODD, are much more difficult to be with than other children their age. They display hostile behaviors which occur more often than normal and are usually seen before the child reaches eight years of age. Some examples of this negative behavior:
    • Frequent temper tantrums Arguments with adults Blames others for own mistakes or behaviors Annoying behaviors Easily annoyed by others Resentfulness Vindictive behavior Purposeful defiance of rules or requests
In school, teachers may also find these students to have low frustration tolerance in completing assignments, frequent temper tantrums, and blaming schoolmates for their own behavior. They also may display other behaviors associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) such as short attention span and limited ability to concentrate, restlessness, fidgeting, and hyperactivity.

Most young children oppositional defiant disorder. This disorder typically appears during the grade school years, but it can begin as early as age three. It affects between 2 and 16 percent of children. The behavior problems that mark oppositional defiant disorder usually occur at home but also may appear at school. They may be a result of upsetting events in a child's life, or they may indicate a more serious behavior problem which will increase as the child gets older. WHAT CAUSES OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER?
Defiant behavior is part of a normal and crucial development stage related to the child's attempt to establish self-determination and autonomy. A strong-willed child may run into problems if parents are overly controlling or exert authority arbitrarily. This may lead to a power struggle. The child's normal attempts at autonomy may develop into oppositional defiant disorder to guard against overdependence on the parents.
    Living with the spirited child

Oppositional behavior can represent a misguided attempt to control the environment, not much different from infants' crying, which brings their parents' response. As they grow up, most children learn socially appropriate ways to get what they want. Some, however, learn only inappropriate methods, becoming demanding, defiant and difficult. Still, other children may display oppositional behavior as a result of feelings of inadequacy stemming from a physical disability or mental retardation.

Oppositional defiant disorder is a pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior toward authority figures. The pattern must persist for at least 6 months and must go beyond the bounds of normal childhood misbehavior.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors of ODD
This disorder is more prevalent in boys than girls. Some studies have shown that 20% of the school-age population is affected, but most experts believe this figure is inflated due to changing cultural definitions of normal childhood behavior and other possible racial, cultural, and gender biases.
Onset typically occurs by age 8. The cause of this disorder is unknown, and may be due to a combination of biology and parenting or environmental factors.
    Symptoms of ODD
    arguing with adults

    angry and resentful of others
actively defies adults' requests spiteful or vindictive behavior blames others for their own mistakes is touchy or easily annoyed few or no friends or loss of previous friends constant trouble in school How is ODD best treated?
