OPOSSUMS This gentle nomad poses no threat to humans.

  • The opossum rarely stays in one place for more than a few nights and seldom causes any serious problems.
  • Instead of digging their own burrows they use abandoned burrows of other animals. If you eliminate brush piles, dilapidated buildings and holes under concrete slabs, you will eliminate opossum hotels.
  • Leaving pet food and exposed trash outdoors at night is an open invitation to dinner for opossums.

Room 2 Crocker Farm School - Mrs. Streeter's Class Room 2's Writing Animal Reports Drawing Map ... Photo of a Virginia Opossum Opossums by Ariel The opossum is a very strange animal and that is why I picked to learn about it. When the opossum screeches it looks like the Tasmanian devil , which is related to the opossum. There are not many types of opossums in North America. Opossums can also be called possums. Its kids are called kids just like humans. The male and female do not have different names. The opossum is a mammal, so it is warm-blooded and has live young. The opossum is related to many different kinds of opossums and possums. They are also related to other marsupials like the Tasmanian devil Opossums have a lot of fur. The colors are gray and white. It has a long tail so it can hang on tree branches. Its tail looks like a rat's tail. The opossum is all furry and puffed up so it looks very weird. The honey possum can also be brown. The opossum is a very short. It is 12 to 20 inches long and five inches wide. It has two litters of babies a year. It can live up to 50 years old. The opossum is a meat-eater. The kinds of meat it eats is anything smaller than its self. Sometimes if food is scarce it will eat plants. If you see an opossum in the city it will not be able to eat meat, so it will probably be eating garbage.

Wildlife Fact Sheets
Opossums
Opossums are the only marsupial on this continent. Also known as Virginia opossums, they are native to the southeastern United States but were introduced to the West in 1890. Currently, there are established populations along the West Coast from British Columbia to San Diego. Generally nocturnal, opossums spend the day in hollow tree trunks, rock crevices, under brush piles, or in burrows. Opossums inhabit forested or brushy habitats, and have adapted well to living close to people in urban and suburban environments. Although they can climb and are good swimmers, opossums prefer to live on the ground where they amble about slowly. Because of this, they are frequently struck by cars when crossing the street. Opossums are omnivores. They eat both plant and animal foods, and scavenge carrion and garbage. Basically solitary, opossums prefer to avoid each other except during breeding season in late winter. Like other marsupials, opossums give birth to almost embryonic young which crawl into their mother's pouch where they will remain firmly attached to a nipple until they are about fifty days old. When the pouch becomes too crowded, the young venture out and ride on their mother's back. Because of their long, naked tails, opossums are sometimes mistaken for large rats. Their teeth give them a menacing look, but opossums are actually quite docile and would prefer to avoid contact with humans. When confronted with danger, they do "play opossum," which is a state similar to fainting that can last from under one minute to six hours, and is designed to make predators lose interest in the motionless opossum.

Search: One of the more robust backyard visitors is the opossum. Often in search of catfood left out they are often noticed by the volume with which they chew dry catfood. Opossums will establish a territory and a route that they will follow. They are not frightened easily and will stand their ground and hiss loudly if cornered. Opossums cannot get rabies (their metabolism is too slow or something) and are not particularly dangerous in any other way. Having an opossum about is actually a very effective way to eliminate the snails from one's garden. Opossums can be domesticated and potty trained. It is recommended that you do not try this with an adult opossum, but if one finds an injured baby opossum, nursing it back to health and either keeping it as a pet or shleffing it off to someone else as a pet (your benevolent attention may have rendered it unqualified for the rough life of the Davis urban wilds) might be a larf. Once you run out of snails to feed them, they also like hardboiled eggs. Kris Fricke once had a pet opossum.

Living With Opossum
Opossum Facts
Opossums are among the most primitive mammals. Fossil ancestry goes back 70 Million years. They have survived by adapting to human habitat and being able to eat just about anything. They are beneficial in that they help to keep the balance of nature. Opossums are often mistaken for rats. They are not rodents, they are marsupials. They are not aggressive toward humans or pets but they will attempt to defend themselves if cornered. They are relatively disease free. They do not carry Parvo virus, distemper or rabies. They are actually an excellent animal to have around your property because they eat rats, mice, snails, slugs and insects. They also eat over ripe fruit that has fallen to the ground. They are called "omnivores" because they meat as well as vegetables and fruit. Opossums are nest builders. They are also nocturnal. They spend much of the day in their dens. At night, they forage for food. They are excellent climbers using all their hands, feet and tail to grasp.

A Little More Information on the Opossum, North America's Only Marsupial
When the land bridge between North and South America formed, the animal we now know as the opossum (Didelphis marsupialis [formerly known as the Virginia Opossum, Didelphis virginiana]) was one of the few that bucked the trend and migrated north. Unlike other opossums, the Virginia Opossum has the ability to store fat not just in its tail, but also under its skin. This extra fat has allowed it to dramatically expand its range. From 1612, when European's first described the species in Virginia, it has moved north and west and now inhabits 42 states and two Canadian Provinces. This dramatic range extension has been almost entirely facilitated by its ability to live with humans. The opossum is an omnivore and an opportunist, and readily takes advantage of the shelter we provide (back porches, sheds, etc), but even more important the extra food (outside dog food, birdseed, dumpsters) that are common in farms, neighborhoods and suburbia. The end result is that, although field guides show opossums living throughout the northern United States, opossums usually live only near humans. This is because, although the young may disperse into forested areas, their fat reserves are insufficient for surviving our winters. These animals are extremely susceptible to hypothermia because they can't regulate their metabolism, i.e. they can't go into any kind of torpor-like or hibernation-like state. They also have a thin fur coat, naked ears, naked foot pads, and a naked tail, all of which susceptible to frostbite. In New England, you can usually spot an opossum that has survived a winter because its ears and tail have frost bite damage.

Summer was playing with yet another young opossum in the yard just a bit ago. What's with these things? I can understand that maybe the dead one under the deck was their parent, but you'd think they'd see the huge dog in the yard and avoid her. What really sucks is when I chase her down to get her to stop, and she runs into the house with the damn thing. Blech.. I don't want those things in the house. At least they're still playing possum when she does it. Misc

Among their chief predators are foxes, owls and coyotes, but many are killed by automobiles. They are very slow runners. In some parts of the country, they are even killed for their meat and fur. These are placid animals and when confronted or threatened will usually try to escape up the nearest tree. With their prehensile tails and opposable "thumbs" on their hind feet, opossums are capable tree climbers. When cornered, an opossum will gape, hiss, and display its very sharp teeth (all 50 of them). When an opossum is under a great deal of stress, it will sometimes fall into an involuntarily catatonic shock-like state, termed as "playing possum." It is important to remember this fact when attempting to pick up a "dead" opossum!

Bog ... Reproduction Adaptations: The opossum weighs from 4 to 15 pounds and reaches a length of from 25 to 40 inches. In our area they have brownish to black fur. The head, throat and cheeks are whitish and its black ears have white or pink tips. Its legs are short and it has an opposable thumb-like first toe on its hind feet. The tail is long and bare and the opossum uses it and its feet for climbing which it does rather well. "Playing Possum" has come to mean pretending inaction in order to deceive an adversary. It came from the fact that when an opossum is confronted with a predator it rolls over and pretends to be dead. This is most likely a catatonic involuntary reaction to stress on the part of the opossum and not a voluntary act.
