A word from Theo Possum: Hi there! My name is Theo Possum. Get it? Theo Possum... The oPossum... the Opossum... Oh well, never mind, it's a dumb name anyway. Stupid humans and their cute pet names... Anyway, as far as I can tell, I am the only possum on earth with his own 'dot com'. But I'm not here to talk about the internet, I'm here to talk about me. And did I mention that my name is Theo Possum? My story starts the night dear old Mom walked out in front of a pickup truck. Even though Mom was not looking very good and was feeling kind of run down (pun intended), my two sisters and three brothers and I were all safe and cozy in her pouch. We were adopted by well meaning human types who wanted to save us from certain death. They gave us a nice cardboard pouch with soft fuzzy towels and a hot water bottle to keep us warm. Every three hours they would wake us up and feed us a warm formula of soy milk and 2% milk out of an eyedropper. Why soy milk and 2% milk, you ask? Who knows? As we grew, our humans fed us all kinds of things that they thought possums liked to eat. We were given grapes, apples, earthworms, cicadas, balogna, baby food, cheese, hamburger, turkey, gravy and other things I still can't name. We were happy, hungry and growing. Our humans were very pleased at saving us from inevitable doom. Even though we got to eat all kinds of yummy things, our diet was ALL wrong. If you know anything about possums, you probably know what came next just by looking at my posture in the photo.

Identification.
The opossum , or "possum" , is found in the west coast states, the Eastern and Central U.S. and throughout Georgia. It is a whitish gray mammal. Adult males weigh an average of 6 to 12lbs. and females 4 to 6lbs. They reach a maximum length of 3' including their hairless, grasping tail. Opossums are the only marsupials
How, when and why they become a nuisance pest.
Opossums can become a nuisance for greater Atlanta residence any time of the year. They may raid improperly sealed trash cans and pet foods left outdoors. Opossums may seek shelter in attics, crawl spaces, tool sheds, decks and porches. Opossums living in and around homes produce unwanted waste and nocturnal noise. It is not uncommon for baby opossums to die in and around homes producing even more of a problem.
Damage they cause.
Most damage caused by opossums occur during the winter and early spring. They will destroy soffits , tear off shingles, damage crawl space vents and take off mushroom vent caps just to gain access to your home. Once inside they will destroy insulation and wires to modify the house to their liking. Opossum droppings pose another threat altogether. Their droppings may contain a verity of diseases harmful to pets and humans.
Trash can raiding opossums can be deterred by fastening lids with bungee cords or other straps. Pet food should be stored in metal containers and food bowls should be brought in nightly. Opossums living in homes can be trapped and relocated at least 15 miles from the property. There is not much of a concern of removing parents from babies because opossums are marsupials. Once opossums are removed and relocated all openings into the structure must be sealed and the area(s) deodorized to prevent future unwanted tenants.

Not only is the exotic Short Tailed Opossum very small, but it has a curious and easy-going nature... they are becoming quite a popular "pocket pet"!
Short Tailed Opossums, also referred to as STO's, are small and very cute. They make unique and fascinating pets. If handled at an early age they are easy to tame. They become very friendly, usually do not bite, and are very easy to keep. You can even train them to use a litter box. They are however solitary animals, and should be kept singly as they tend to fight with other opossums when they reach maturity.

About Gray Short-Tailed Opossums
Gray short-tailed opossums (STO) are a small, solitary, exotic marsupial gaining popularity as a "pocket pet". They are from Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina. They were originally brought to the USA from Brazil in 1978 and have been bred for the pet trade since 1994. When full grown they reach about the size of a large gerbil or hamster and have a lifespan of about 4 years in captivity . They live by themselves in the wild and should be kept singly as pets. They are known by several different names, including

Opossums Are From South America
Possums Are From Australia)
Footprints of Monodelphis domestica More than 60 species of opossums live in South America and 1 is found in North America. Most Americans are only familiar with that 1 very large opossum and are surprised to learn there are 60+ types...many of them smaller than the palm of your hand! Despite the similarity in name, "Opossums" from South America and "Possums" from Australia are very different. Opossums received their name in 1612 from Captain John Smith of the Jamestown colony in Virginia. The word came from the Cherokee Indian name for the American animal. Possums received their name in 1770 from Captain Cook's botanist Sir Joseph Banks. He described an Australian common ringtail possum as "an animal of the Opossum tribe" based on their similar appearance. However, they are not closely related biologically. They are separated by 2 continents and 70+ million years. The family of American opossums (called "Didelphidae") has 15 genera and 60+ species that range from North America to southern Argentina. Their sizes range from the tiny 40 gram mouse opossums to the large 2 kg opossum found in North America. Most opossums are solitary and nocturnal. They range from primarily terrestrial, to semi-arboreal, to almost fully arboreal. South American Opossums - Order Didelphidae Caluromys

Short Tailed Opossums
The short tailed opossum ( Monodelphis domestica ) is a member of the zoological order marsupialia. Included in this order are kangaroos, sugar gliders, wombats and Tasmanian devils, along with a widely diverse number of other animals. All marsupials have several features in common. Among these are the structure of their reproductive organs, dentition and a short gestation followed by a long developmental period for their young. Most female marsupials have a pouch in which they carry their babies. Short tailed opossums don't. Instead, the newly born babies attach to their mother's nipples which then enlarge and securely hold them in place against her stomach. Short tailed opossums are 4 to 6 inches in body length when full grown. They weigh between 3 and 5 ounces. Males tend to be somewhat larger than females. Their thick, velvety fur is usually gray-brown on top and lighter underneath. They have a prehensile tail used for balancing, as well as carrying bedding or other items. Unlike their North American cousins, it isn't weight bearing. Native to the South American countries of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, short tails are frequently found living in houses, where they are readily welcomed since they feed on rodent and insect pests.

Didelphimorphs are small to medium-sized marsupials . They tend to be semi-arboreal omnivores , although there are many exceptions. Most members of this taxon have long snouts, a narrow braincase, and a prominent sagittal crest (a bone crest running longitudinally along the center of the skull). The dental formula (one side of one jaw) includes 5 incisors (4 on the lower jaw), 1 canine, 3 premolars and 4 molars. By mammal standards, this is a very full jaw. The incisors are very small, the canines large. The molars are tricuspid Didelphimorphs have a plantigrade stance (feet flat on the ground). Most unusually, the hind feet have an opposable digit with a nail—not a claw. Nails are otherwise rare in the animal world and are common only among

They are legal to have as pets because they are considered to be feral , not wild animals. It is normally about $200 to buy a baby opossum ,but we are only asking for a $75 adoption fee to help us care for all the animals in our care. We are willing to drive up to 100 miles away for a gas fee. We cannot ship these babies. We have had people drive from as far as Montana to adopt an animal. It just makes us believe that you would be as devoted to the pet if you are willing to do that. WE , of course, would prefer that you drive all the way here. We are in southern California. The Virginia Opossum ( Didelphis virginiana ) is the only living marsupial from North America. It is common in the eastern USA and has spread north and west. This large opossum lives in deciduous forests and prairies Virginia Opossums are nocturnal (most active at night). They sleep during the day in a den in a hollow tree or in an abandoned rodent burrow. Playing Possum : When opossums are attacked, they will "play possum," pretending that they are dead; they remain still, do not blink, and their tongue hangs out. This act often makes the attacker lose interest in the opossum. Some of their many predators include foxes and dogs. Anatomy : The Virginia Opossum is about 2.5 feet (76 cm) long, including its foot-long, hairless, prehensile (grasping) tail. This opossum is about the size of a cat. It has a clawless, opposable thumb on each hind foot. The Pouch : The young are about the size of a bee when they are born. Females have a fur-lined pouch on their abdomen into which these tiny, under-developed young crawl. The young live and drink milk from teats in the pouch for about 2 months.

    Opossums
Opossums ( Didelphis virginiana ) are the definitive host of S. neurona . Opossums shed sporocysts, which are the infective stage for both aberrant hosts, horses, and the natural intermediate hosts, the identity of which are unknown. A flurry of recent research activity has revealed that S. neurona and S. falcatula are distinct species. The geographic distribution of the occurrence of EPM in horses closely matches the geographic range of opossums. This range includes most of South America, all of Central America and most of the US and southern Canada. Regions of the US in which there are no opossums have low rates of both exposure and central nervous system infection with EPM. Those infections that do occur are likely a result of either exposure in horses having left the area, or the rare exposure from hay, grain or other substances originating from an endemic area. Opossums have roamed the New World for 170 million years, predating dinosaurs. As recently as the turn of the century, opossums in North America were limited in range to the Southeastern United States. However, in the last century, opossums have spread to fill most of the US, and parts of Southern Canada. This increase in population reflects the adaptability of this species. Garbage and other waste is a favorite food source, and declines in fur trapping have resulted in a population explosion of this pest species. The overpopulation of opossums has inevitably resulted in an increase of EPM, and probably has other ecological implications.

    Opossum, North America's only marsupial.
DNR Photo. Have you ever heard of "playing 'possum?" Opossums are known for playing dead when predators are nearby or attack. The opossum is so good at it that it could win a creepy contest when it falls on its side, becomes limp and motionless, while the front feet ball up. Drool then comes out of its mouth and it poops with some extra green smelly mucus. Who would want to stick around this scene? Yuck! They are tough. Even if the opossum is further attacked, it won’t show any signs of suffering. This mammal, the size of a large house cat, is usually seen waddling slowly and awkwardly in woodland areas near streams, marshes, farmland and even your yard after dark. You can find them across Wisconsin except for the Northeast part of the state. The opossum has sparse coarse light gray fur. Look for their short legs, long scaly tail, large round and hairless ears, cone-shaped head and pointed snout with long whiskers. Males measure around 36 inches long at six to twelve pounds; females are shorter and weigh around four to seven pounds. Opossums have feet there are specially adapted to grabbing things because of their human hand shape. Their front feet have five toes that all look similar. Their unique long hairless tail also helps them grab things like branches in trees where they like to "hang out" much of the time.
