Opossum General Information Over 70 million years ago dinosaurs roamed the Earth. While they are now extinct, one animal who shared the same land with the dinosaurs still exists today... the opossum Despite its appearance, the opossum is not related to the rat. In fact, the opossum is a marsupial, or "pouched" mammal, and is therefore related to other marsupials such as the kangaroo and the koala. Like kangaroos and koalas, infant opossums stay inside the mother's pouch to nurse and develop. The opossum holds the distinction of being North Americas's only marsupial. Opossums are born after an 11-13 day gestation period. The pink, embryonic-looking infants are so small at birth that 20 could fit into a teaspoon. The infants continue to develop inside the pouch. As they grow and the pouch becomes full, the juveniles then ride on the mother's back until they are old enough to go out on their own. The opossum has an average lifespan of 1 to 2 years. This short lifespan is due in part to the presence of many predators including dogs, cats and people. Sometimes the opossum is able to escape death by "playing 'possum" or feigning death, and in so doing the predator may lose interest in the apparently dead animal and not eat it

Opossums Opossums are nocturnal, and need a quiet and dark place during the daytime. They are attracted by pet food, ripe fruit, water and snails. They are generally not destructive or predatory. They are usually solitary. They are marsupials, carrying their babies in a pouch, often not making a nest until the babies are several months old. Their breeding season begins in February and can go through November. Opossums can have 3 litters a year. Litters average about 8 young, but can be up to 13. It is not good to feed opossums, either intentionally or unintentionally. Don't leave pet food outside at night, keep ripe fruit picked, keep garbage cans securely covered. Opossums may "play dead" when startled or confronted; they may lie there for up to an hour before coming to and scurrying away. Under House Find the entrance, usually a loose vent cover. Wait until the opossum comes out, then securely close the hole. Make sure there are no babies still under the house. If there are babies under the house, allow the babies to mature until they are old enough to join the mother outside, then close the opening when they have left.

Awesome Possums Claim: Opossums can hang by their tails. Status: False. Example: [Collected on the Internet, 1997]
Do opossums hang by their tails in trees? I've heard that they do. Origins: Opossums are misunderstood creatures, often mistaken for members of the rodent family because of their long rat-like tails. Opossums are actually North America's only marsupial, a class of mammal that carries its newborn in an abdominal pouch. (The North American opossum should not be confused with the Australian possum, which is a related but distinctly different animal.) After the first 60 days, the babies emerge to take their places on Mama's back to be further ferried around for an additional couple of months. Opossums, one might say, carry both motherhood and their offspring to extremes.) Captain John Smith (of Pocahontas fame) is credited with bestowing the 'opossum' handle on the critter from the Algonquin Indian name 'apasum,' which means 'white face.' Smith described the animal as having "a head like a swine and a tail like a rat," a rather accurate, if unflattering, portrait. The opossum is at home in trees. It uses its prehensile tail to help stabilize position when climbing, much the same way as a mouse will use its tail to maintain balance when it climbs a wheat stalk to nosh on the grain. Opossums do not hang by their tails, though. A baby opossum might be able to manage this feat for a second or two, but weight and body size in proportion to tail strength rule out the possibility of an adult opossum's pulling it off.

What ever happened to the
Wonderful Skunk and Opossum
web site.
Well... for any die-hard folks who are still waiting for it to come back I hate to disappoint you but I doubt it's going to happen. When I first created the Wonderful Skunk and Opossum web site the World Wide Web was a relatively small place... I can only guess the number of web pages available on the internet is at least over 100, possibly over times greater than the number of pages there were when I first started. Skunks and opossums have for a long time been my favorite small critters and when I first looked for information on them on the internet I found there really wasn't all that much. I wanted to change that. I had also started learning HTML code so I could actually make it possible. Over the years I had collected some interesting and unusual information about skunks and opossums and wanted to make that the focus of the Wonderful Skunk and Opossum pages. Things were going pretty good. Then the problems started coming.
Big problem #1, E-mail.

Wildlife A Closer Look at Wildlife Opossums
Opossums
Didelphis virginiana ) is the only marsupial found north of Mexico. Marsupials are distinguished by their unique mode of reproduction: The young are born in an almost embryonic form and make their way to the pouch in their mother's abdomen, where they are nourished for what in other mammals would be most of the gestational period. When confronted, opossums sometimes display their teeth (opossums have more teeth—fifty of them—than any other North American mammal) and may even hiss. Although this appears to signal a fierce opponent, opossums are actually shy and inoffensive. Rather than fight, they'll sometimes slip into a state of apparent death—a reaction celebrated in our colloquial expression, "playing possum." This state of catatonia can last a minute or two, or even as long as two hours, before the "dead" opossum revives and moves on, once the danger has passed. Opossums are omnivorous and consume an amazing variety of plant and animal foods. Invertebrates, such as insects, slugs, snails, and worms, can comprise a large part of their diet, and they're not above scavenging carrion. Contrary to popular folklore, opossums very rarely raid garbage cans, poultry coops, or gardens. They are most active at night, and they have a habit of ceaselessly moving along the ground in search of food, without following trails or travel routes to places of known food sources. In fact, adult male opossums may wander continuously. Females spend their lives in more defined areas, but still move around almost randomly. Most opossums seen in yards and neighborhoods are likely to move on without human encouragement or intervention if given enough time.

Or Call the FDA at 1-888-INFO-FDA (1-888-463-6332) . If you call then call often, call daily... we only have 20 days to stop this law! FENNEC FOX ( Vulpes Zerda ) I no longer breed Patagonian Cavy.. due to a nasty divorce I had sold off my entire stock of them. The only animals that I currently offer are FENNEC FOX. Fennec Fox Cubs (or pups, kits.. which ever you prefer to call them) will be available in the spring of 2006. Pricing will be $1000 each. All babies will be related so I do not offer breeder pairs.. I can however hook you up with a fellow breeder who can provide another unrelated animal for breeding purposes (but her animals are higher priced). All fennec babies are pulled from 10-13 days of age and bottle fed to ensure the best pet quality. Unlike other breeders I do not make it sound like Fennec Foxes are the perfect pets. They are fun, gentle animals that can make great house pets. But keep in mind... litter training can be less than perfect with some animals. If someone is promising that Fennecs are easy to litter train they are full of it. They are high strung, high energy animals sort of like ferrets (with the aloofness of a cat) personality wise.. which is why they can be tricky to litter train at times.
