As development of once rural land increases, the opossum continues to be pushed out of its natural habitat and forced into closer proximity to people, often with injurious consequences to the opossum. This is where the Opossum Society of the United States comes in. The Opossum Society of the United States is a non-profit, wildlife rehabilitation and educational organization dependent entirely upon volunteers, membership dues and donations. Our goals are to:
  • Provide for the care and treatment of injured and orphaned wild opossums for release back into the environment. Educate the public about the misunderstood opossum and the benefits the opossum provides. Network and share knowledge and experiences with fellow wildlife rehabilitators and others in the wildlife health field.
We do not condone nor encourage the keeping of opossums as pets.

Opossums - Habitat
Virginia Opossums (Didelphis virginiana) inhabit the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, Central America, and Pacific coastal North America. The Virginia Opossum is the only marsupial found in the North America. In South America and Australia there are about 80 species of Opossums. Opossums lived during the era of dinosaurs - fossil remains have been found from 70 million years ago. Picture courtesy of

Opossums - Taxonomy
  • Class: mammalia Order: didelphimorphia Suborder: marsupials Family: didelphinae (Opossum) Genus: didelphis Species: didelphis virginiana.
Opossums - Reproduction
The breeding season for Opossums begins in December and may continue through October with most of the infants born between February and June. Like all marsupials, Opossum females have a well-developed pouch. They produce an average of 7 young, once or twice a year (litters of 17 kids have been reported). At birth, the infants are hairless, embryonic-looking, and weigh about 0.1 grams because the period of gestation is 12-13 days and because they are born at a very early stage in their development. Young Opossums have to make a long and difficult journey from the birth canal into the pouch and latch onto a teat. The mother helps by licking the hair leading into the pouch. There are only 13 teats in the pouch and not all may be functional, so the excess infants will not survive. The young open the eyes at around 60-70 days and are weaned at about 100 days of age. Then they are often carried as they cling onto the mother's back. After separation from the mother, littermates may share common dens for some time. Very few young Opossums survive to become adults.

A Short Quiz ...
What animal goes on a honeymoon, and 13 days later gives birth? It lived during the age of dinosaurs: fossil remains have been found from 70 million years ago. It can eat almost anything.
It loves to eat insects (beetles, cockroaches, and so forth).
It eats snails and slugs.
It catches and eats roof rats.
It also eats cat food, dog food, people food. It has thumbs on its hind feet! It is very quiet, although it can make some sounds. Learning and discrimination tests rank it above dogs, and more on the level of pigs.
Give Up? More clues...
It does not have a territory, but is always on the move, going to wherever the food is. Females stay in a smaller area while they care for their young. It puts up a terrific bluff if cornered and can give the appearance of being really good at defending itself. NOTE: it is

4. Raising Orphaned Opossums
Article gives techniques for raising orphaned opossums.
http://www.2ndchance.info/raisepossum.htm
Taking Care of Orphaned Virginia Opossums Ron Hines DVM PhD 5/21/04 Opossums are frequently found orphan ed. Caring for orphan opossums is more difficult than some other species because of the dynamics of opossum immunity. Orphan opossums are often found on their dead mothers beside the roadway. Orphan opossums do well on kitten milk formulas. Orphan opossums need to be kept warm artificially. Orphan opossums need help urinating and defecating. Orphan opossums should receive a large variety of fruit and vegetables and insects in order to learn to survive in the wild. If orphan female opossums are kept past their first season they need to be spayed. The mortality of baby opossums in the wild is close to ninty percent. Orphan opossums should be released in a semi-rural environment. Orphan opossums may lack fear of dogs and other dangers.
Furry opossums are quite easy to raise, if given the proper diet and care. Smaller infants are quite a challenge. Try to find a wildlife rehabilitator in your area with experience with very young opossums. Should you decide to attempt to raise the orphan(s) yourself, this is how I do it:
Opossums that are cold dehydrated and nearly dead when you get them often make miraculous recoveries with subcutaneous fluids. Giving fluids intravenously or intraperitoneally is a last ditch effort and is best left to a veterinarian if done at all.

Opossums - Uses
Opossums are considered to be furbearers, but they are not taken in large numbers because their pelt has little value. Opossums are nature's sanitation engineers; they eat road-kill, carrion, rotting fruits, and pests. Also Opossums are of great interest for scientists since they are the only marsupials in America, while Australian marsupials are driven to extinction by more modern mammals.
Weight: 9-13 lbs (4-6 kg). Some species reach only 300 gr.
Length: 15-20 inches (38-50 cm). Some species are 10-12 inches.
Life Span: 1-2 years in the wild, up to 10 years in captivity.
Opossums - Conservation
In the wild Opossums are closely linked with the ecology of the forests. Devastating fires destroy nest-sites and cause great declines in Opossums populations. Tall, straight trees favored by wild Opossums are highly valued for the production of timber. The technique of tree removing is very detrimental for all animals, including Opossums. The population crash has already begun and extinction of some species of Opossums in the South America and Australia is possible. Picture courtesy of
Just Playin' Opossums
Opossums - Diet
Opossums don't have any methods for storing food or energy so they need stable food sources and that's why their diet is so varied. Opossums feed mostly on carrion. Other food sources for the Opossum include garbage, grass, leaves, insects, frogs, small birds and rodents, snakes, and earthworms. Opossums like to treat themselves with berries, seeds, flowers, and fruits and their favorites are persimmons, apples, and corn.

Discouraging Opossums from Your Yard
...although we don't know why you would want to...
  • Opossums regularly consume insects, snails, worms, rats, mice, and carrion. They can actually help keep your yard free of these pests.
  • They are far less of a health risk to you or your children or pets than nearly any other wild animal. By eliminating the opossums, you may create a niche that will be filled by a less desirable species. Rabies and viral diseases (e.g., distemper) are practically unheard of in the opossum.
  • They are exceptionally non-aggressive and non-destructive. They will not dig up your lawn, chew wood or wires, or create burrows. They do not "attack" anything that is not a food source, and is not threatening them. If you keep prey animals such as birds, rodents, or rabbits, you must keep them secure in their enclosures from any wild animal. Adult cats and adult opossums generally get along together, or ignore one another. Dogs are a serious threat to opossums, but not vice versa.
  • Just because you see an opossum around does not mean that they are the ones causing your trouble. Opossums are much less secretive than animals that cause damage, and you are more likely to see them, when it is actually another animal doing the deed. It very unusual for them to be the culprits of any damage to property or lawns.

The opossum has been around for at least 70 million years and is one of Earth's oldest surviving mammals! The opossum is about the size of a large house cat. It has a triangular head and a long pointed nose. It has grayish fur everywhere but on its ears, feet and tail. Its tail is prehensile . A prehensile tail is adapted for grasping and wrapping around things like tree limbs. The opossum can hang from its tail for a short time. Some people think opossums hang from their tails and sleep. They don't. Their tails aren't strong enough to hold them for that long! The opossum has opposable hallux . A hallux is like a thumb. The opossum's "thumbs" are on its rear feet. The hallux helps it grasp branches when it climbs. The opossum doesn't hibernate in the winter. It will often hole up during very cold weather because it runs the risk of getting frostbite on its hairless ears, tail and toes.
