104. Great Performances . Dialogue . "The Little Prince" . Rachel Portman | PBS
GP Were you interested in opera and musicals as a child? Sadly, when I was young, I wasn t steeped in musicals and opera, although I listened to a lot
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/dialogue/dialogue_lp_portman.html
GREAT PERFORMANCES : How is developing an opera different from developing a film score?
Rachel Portman : Firstly, I have to generate the drama completely, musically, as opposed to reacting to something else. The project ["The Little Prince"] started with the book, instead of with a film, and it involved me and the librettist and the director working out how best to dramatize it. So it started from the book, but we had to turn it into something that would become compelling. It started with us meeting in a room around a table, as opposed to me sitting down and being screened a film that I would then sort of have strong ideas about. This started very much from the story of the book, but also from nothing, in a way, because it [the original idea] could have been anything. It was a much longer process. It was sort of like, for me, what I imagine writing a book must be like. It was a huge project, and it took about two years for me.
GP : But it was still a collaborative process in that, instead of being screened a film and reacting to that, you were working in a group and weren't off by yourself.
RP : From the very beginning we were all, at the beginning, thinking about how best to do it whether, for example, The Little Prince should be sung by a soprano, a young girl soprano, which was something I really didn't want right from the beginning, because I always thought children would enjoy it much more if there was a boy in it, and if there were children in it. But then there were real fears that with the amount of weight on his shoulders, he wouldn't be able to carry a whole piece. And so that became my biggest task, actually. And the task of the librettist, Nick Wright, to involve The Pilot more, and keep The Prince's part as simple as possible.

The snarl of racing cars whizzing past the starting line, the New York City subway, a ping-pong game, the bowling alley, the zing of a rifle bullet toward its target, the soft-shoe dance across the stage—these and a host of other novel effects became showpieces for the home stereo listener. Wonderful as these stereo sound effects may be as aural novelties, they cannot hold the listener’s attention for long or over many hearings. The substance of almost all recordings worth living with is, after all—MUSIC.

    120. Omaha Performing Arts Society - Orpheum Theater - History
Managed by the Omaha Performing Arts Society, this theater will primarily feature Broadway musicals, dance, ballet, opera and popular entertainment.
    http://www.omahaperformingarts.org/or_history.asp
History Welcome to Omaha's Orpheum Theater!
Omaha's celebrated Orpheum Theater is home of the finest in local and national performing arts. Located in downtown Omaha, the Orpheum underwent a major $10 million renovation in 2002 and the ornate splendor of this magnificent theater was enhanced to better serve patrons and artists. In 2004, the Orpheum Theater Skylink was added for increased convenience and accessibility to the Orpheum. The 200-foot-long elevated, enclosed and climate-controlled walkway connects the OPPD parking garage to the Orpheum Theater.
The 2,600 seat proscenium theater was originally built in 1927 as a vaudeville house, and now serves as the home of Opera Omaha and the Omaha Symphony. The season also includes presentations by other local groups and Broadway shows presented by Broadway in Omaha. We hope you will join us in this beautiful theater as we present the very best in artistic performances.
    The Orpheum Theater 1927-2002
Sinking into the plush seats of the newly renovated Orpheum Theater, one can feel more than 100 years of social and cultural history resonating from the site. In the late 19th century, the Withnell Building, erected by pioneer contractor John Withnell, became the headquarters for the U.S. Army “Department of the Platte.” Formed after the Civil War, this military designation stretched from the Missouri River into Montana, and from Canada to Texas. When the Army headquarters were moved to Fort Omaha, the opportunity to develop Harney Street between 15th and 16th Streets emerged. In 1895, John A. McShane organized a stock company to build the Creighton Theater on the Withnell site. Demolition and construction of the new facility took only five months. The Creighton Theater was named after "Count" John A. Creighton, whose portrait decorated the proscenium arch above the stage. His title was honorary, given to him by Pope Leo XIII, making him a Count of the Papal States.
