John Kenrick at jbk@musicals101.com History of The Musical Stage 1980s: Part III by John Kenrick Mega-Musicals: Britain 's Revenge The original flyer announcing the arrival of Me an My Girl on Broadway in the summer of 1986. From the mid-1980s on, British mega-musicals flew across the Atlantic season after season like an implacable invading force. Me and My Girl was a charming World War II London hit with a revised book and the songs of Noel Gay, kicked up to hit status by Robert Lindsay's ingratiating performance. The "Brit hits" that followed were brand new, and their charm was open to question. Relying on hydraulics and high-tech special effects, these shows came to be known as mega -musicals . Substance took a backseat to spectacle, and humor was buried in oceans of lush melody and soap opera-style sentiment. Although all this spectacle and technology came with a high price tag, the best of these shows ran for decades, selling tickets to millions of people who had long since fallen out of the habit of going to the theatre.

Hamburg is a city-state; it values its status as a "free city". Traditionally one of the most important harbors in Europe , the city takes great pride in its mercantile background. Millions left Europe on their way to the new world. Even today, one of Hamburgs taglines is "The Gate to the World". With the decline of sea travel, Hamburg has been trying - with some success - to cast itself as a hub of the service industry, especially media. edit

By plane
Hamburg has the fifth-largest international airport in Germany, so arrival by plane is an obvious choice for those visiting from far away. Hamburg airport is closed at nighttime. So be careful not to book late flights. Severely delayed flights mustn't land in Hamburg, they have to land in Hannover, Frankfurt or other airports instead. The airport-which is hugely popular with plane-spotters-is surrounded by Schrebergartens (meticulous privately maintained mini-garden parcels), parklands and open greenspaces, criss-crossed by biking and walking trails.

Log-in Ballad Operas Burlesques Gilbert and Sullivan English Comic Opera Musical Comedy The Gaiety Girls Chu Chin Chow John Gay John Rich Royal Opera House The Beggar's Opera burlesqued The popularity of was due both to the clever use of familiar tunes and because the main characters were ordinary people with whom the audience could identify. Gay borrowed all the music from popular songs of the time, including broadside ballads, folk tunes and well-known arias by composers like Handel . The play was a satire on politics, poverty and injustice. It also satirised Italian Dramatic Opera which was popular in London at that time. The central moral of the play was that corruption permeates all walks of society. The Beggar's Opera Design The Beggar's Opera Actress Lavinia Fenton, the first Polly Peachum, became a big star and a substantial trade in mementoes and souvenirs grew up around her. In 1729, at the peak of her career, she ran off with the Duke of Bolton. They did not marry until after the death of his first wife 23 years later.
