Ontario County Ontario County was taken from Montgomery in 1789, and included all the land of which the pre-emptive right had been ceded to the state of Massachusetts, which that state afterward sold to Phelps and Gorham, and which afterward chiefly passed into the possession of the Holland Land Company and the Pulteney estate. Ontario county then extended from the pre-emption line a mile eastward of Geneva, so as to include within its limits all the territory within the hounds of
this state west of that line. This was commonly known as the “Genesee country,” although the title was occasionally more extensively applied, and from it have been formed the counties of Steuben, Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chatauque, Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Wyoming, Orleans, Monroe, Livingston, Yates, Wayne, in part, leaving to a tract around the former chief town, (Canandaigua,) the name of Ontario. In 1790, this extensive territory had only 1,075 inhabitants. The surface is agreeably diversified, waving in gentle swells and valleys of ample area, with tracts of campaign, and in the southern part more or less hilly. The soil partakes of a considerable variety, but a warm and rich mould forms the greater proportion, while along the borders of Lake Ontario there are tracts of clayey loam, with but a slight admixture of mould. The principal streams are Flint creek, Canandaigua outlet, and Mud creek. The lakes are Canandaigua, Honeoye

Located near the Yonge and Dundas subway station, right in the heart of downtown Toronto, the first Cineplex theatre complex opened April 19, 1979. It closed March 12, 2001, just 23 days shy of its 22nd anniversary. It revolutionized motion-picture exhibition in North America and around the world, and in that lies a Canadian story worth retelling. The idea for a multiplex cinema was the brainchild of distributor/producer/journalist Nat Taylor. In 1948, he opened his first twin cinema in Ottawa and nurtured the idea for a chain of such theatres. Nearly 30 years later, Garth Drabinsky came into his life, a young, smart, very ambitious entertainment law student eager to get ahead in the business. At first Drabinsky worked for Taylor writing for his various film publications, but he had bigger ideas. In 1977, he become involved with raising tax-shelter financing for Daryl Duke's The Silent Partner, which was being produced by Stephen Young. Part of the shoot took place in Toronto's recently opened Eaton Centre, and there Drabinsky saw an opportunity to implement Taylor's longcherished dream.

Medieval Global Economies
The goal of this conference is to bring international researchers together, permitting a comparative analysis of wealth and economic development, globally, in the middle ages, c. 300-c.1500. What were the foundations of medieval growth? How was growth characterized? Who forged ahead in wealth, who fell behind, and of course, when and why? In making these comparisons, we also seek to achieve a greater understanding of the intersection and exchange between countries, the character of global economies, during these centuries. What were the legacies of medieval development and globalization? ...[ MORE

If you have access to a road map of Ontario, locate Toronto, our Province's Capital and principal city, and then travel north east along the north shore of Lake Ontario. When you've located the town of Trenton, draw an imaginary line northward toward Bancroft. From Bancroft extend your imaginary line almost due easterly toward the City of Ottawa, our Nation's Capital, which is located on the Ottawa River. In a generalized sense, everything south and east of this imaginary line, between the Ottawa River on the north and the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario on the south are included in the area that we normally designate as eastern Ontario. The following Counties fall within the eastern Ontario area:

HISTORY OF GIDLEY REAL ESTATE LTD. GIDLEY REAL ESTATE LTD. has been an active business in Bala for 54 years.
However, the roots of the company reach back even further. Mark Gidley, now the Broker for the company, is the great-grandson of Thomas Burgess Sr., the founder of Bala, who brought his family to settle here in 1868. Thomas and his sons gave the town a strong foundation on which it has continued to build. Mark's Mother, born and raised in Bala, passed her passion for this beautiful town along to her son.
In 1968, Mark joined his Father in the business and took over the reins in the early 70's. Like his forefathers, Mark has always been actively involved in the community, both as a leader and a supporter. In 1995, the insurance portion of the business was sold, allowing Mark to devote his full time to real estate.
Mark knows it is a privilege to live and work in Ontario's most popular vacationland. He lives by the company slogan, "Our Pleasure to Serve".

Introduction to Polyphony
Polyphony, based on a bi-annual publication of the same name, is an historical testimony of the many ethnic cultures that constitute Ontario's people. The pages that follow, reflect the people of Polyphony and portray them as sharing similar experiences: their manner of arrival in Ontario, the development of their communities and the problems they faced. These experiences, in the context of themes such as labour, sports or theatre, are the primary foci of Polyphony. Presented here in digital form,is a collection of articles, photographs and audio clips selected from Polyphony and the Multicultural History Society of Ontario (MHSO). Together they provide an introduction to the history rich with Ontario's cultural diversity. ~ This website explores the immigrant experience through eight different themes. Within each theme, there are articles, photographs and oral testimonies that provide a glimpse into the history and development of immigrants in Ontario. Each theme contains three to six articles, an oral history clip(s), as well as a selection of photos. Enjoy! ~ Use our very own navigation tool to guide yourself through the pages of Polyphony
Featured here is an excerpt from the first issue of Polyphony
The purpose of Polyphony is to introduce the reader to the Multicultural History Society of Ontario. The Society hopes to ensure the survival of as full a record as possible of immigration to Ontario, ethnicity, the old country origins of our people, and the historical experience of all groups in the province.
