Government Ontario: History and People History It is believed Ontario's first peoples arrived about 10 000 years ago, during the last ice age. It is estimated that approximately four hundred years ago about 60,000 aboriginal people lived in what is today Ontario. They spoke one of two language groups; Algonquian and Iroquoian. The Algonquin speakers included the Ojibways, the Algonquins, and the Cree in the north and the Hurons, Tobaccos and Neutrals in the central and southern areas of present day Ontario. The Algonquian-speaking people farmed, where soils permitted, but primarily they hunted and fished. The five Iroquoian-speaking nations lived most of the year in villages in the central and southern areas in what is present-day southern Ontario and northern New York where farming was more possible. Living in 'longhouses', surrounded by fortified walls, their towns were similar in nature to those of rural and agricultural peoples in parts of northern Europe. Henry Hudson, after whom Hudson's Bay was named, became the first European to touch the shores of present-day Ontario in 1610. During the conflict between the European powers for domination of global trade, both the French and the British claimed the newly discovered North American lands for their countries. France claimed what is now central Canada, calling it 'New France.' while the British in Hudson's Bay and to the south, in present day United States, also laid claim to much of the land. New France included much of present day Ontario.

The town of Ontario was formed from Williamson on March 27, 1807, and included the present day town of Walworth. It was originally known as Freetown until February 12, 1808, when its name officially became Ontario. Ontario is located in the northwest corner of Wayne County, with Lake Ontario forming its northern border. The town consists of slightly over 19,100 acres of mostly level surface, with a slight inclination toward the lake. The southern part of the town contains the famous ridge, thought to be the southern shore of Lake Ontario in the far distant past. In 1806, the first settler, Freeman Hopkins, came to Ontario from Rhode Island. As he was a Quaker, he and his family returned to Rhode Island at the outbreak of the War of 1812 to avoid the hostilities because of their close proximity to Lake Ontario. However, in 1818, the family eturned to Ontario.

History of the Blue Box in Ontario Mid-80s to Early 90s
Receiving royal assent on June 27, 2002, Bill 90 becomes Ontario's Waste Diversion Act, 2002 , An Act to promote the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste. The Waste Diversion Act establishes Waste Diversion Ontario (WDO). The Waste Diversion Act and subsequent "Minister's Letter" to the WDO Chair require all companies that introduce packaging and printed paper into the Ontario consumer marketplace to share in the funding of 50% of Ontario’s municipal Blue Box waste diversion programs.
After consultation and development, the final draft Blue Box Program Plan is approved by the Board of Directors of Stewardship Ontario on February 6, and approved by the WDO Board of Directors on February 19. The Blue Box Program Plan is delivered to Ontario's Environment Minister on the February 28 and posted on the Ontario Environmental Bill of Rights Registry for 60 days. On December 22, 2003, the Blue Box Program Plan was approved by Leona Dombrowsky, Ontario Minister of the Environment.

Verona Ontario History
By Deborah Lovegrove
Records show that this area was settled as early as 1821, but Verona was not officially recognised and given a post office until 1858.
The settlers had a difficult time getting to the village because of the deplorable road conditions. The travellers would have to cross the Cameron Bog, a 5,000 acre swamp that almost divides Portland township into two separate areas. Today, we have a modern two lane highway stretching from Kingston in the south to Sharbot Lake in the north. The town settled along the highway from Hardwood Creek to Desert Lake Road, a distance of about 1 mile. There was some lateral settling, but the railroad was on one side and the lake was on the other. Verona was once known as Buzztown, because of the many saw and grist mills.
Verona became the center of commerce, as it was the only crossing place over the Cameron Bog. There were many hotels, but today they are used as private homes. Some of the older homes in Verona are from the turn of the twentieth century and are still in use today. The first church in town was the Methodist church in 1878, which later became the United church. The community now supports four churches of various denominations. The village has always had a doctor, a general store and many other industries. There are a few books on the history of Verona and one is in the process of being written.

A History of the Green Party in Ontario: Frank de Jong Printer Friendly Format After almost 20 years of glacially slow growth the Green Party of Ontario is at long last starting to show signs of life. In the provincial election, expected in April, we will be fielding a full or near full slate of candidates and we will be presenting a professionally looking and sounding platform document. Party memory is growing and social cohesion among party members is generally quite high. We are appearing in public opinion polls at around 3% of the popular vote. These are all encouraging signs for a party that has languished between the floor and the wax for 15 years. The Party has grown so very slowly for a variety of reasons. It was founded too early, before the greater green movement grew to the point that it needed or wanted an electoral wing. The "wrong" people started the party. The other parties were "green enough" for the average voter. Ontario was not noted for it's ecological wonders and the voters don't consider nature conservation a priority. Pollution and resource depletion were not serious enough to matter to voters. Any or all of the above reasons will do.

Brantford Township History
These Township Histories have been transcribed by Bill Bowman from Warner and Beers History of Brant County 1883. They are being posted as Bill completes them. A big thank you to Bill for his hard work! Please use your browser's Find feature to make sure you don't miss your surname, which might be buried inside a different surname biography. BRANTFORD TOWNSHIP Page 361 The settlement of this township dates from the commencement of the present century. The first white settler was Mr. John File, who found the entire region covered with forest, oak, pine and maple, and used as a hunting ground by the Six Nation Indians of the Iroquois tribe, who considered the whole region on each side of the Grand River as their indefeasible property. Bottom Page 361-362 Bottom Page 362-365 When the last verdict had been rendered and the court closed, the ox-team was hitched up and the two days' drive through the woods was resumed. Well was it when the wolves, hunger-driven through the oak forest, failed to over take the slow-moving equipage. As late as 1830 the entire area of what is now Brantford Township remained in the possession of the Six Nations Indians, but at that date the town plot of Brantford and the north part of the township of the same name were deeded away, and further surrenders were made from time to time until the whole township was ceded and settled. When a subdivision was effected of the four original districts into which the Province of Upper Canada was divided, this township was made a part of the Gore District, and was incorporated in the County of Wentworth, until it was attached to the new County of Brant on the formation of the latter in the year 1852.
