adsonar_pid=3019;adsonar_ps=370666;adsonar_zw=540;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com'; French explorer Samuel de Champlain traveled up the Ottawa River in 1613, opening the principal fur-trade route to the upper Great Lakes. The presence of European trade changed the Native Americans' lifestyle and aggravated tensions between the Algonquin tribes and the Iroquois. In the mid 1600s, a massive Iroquois offensive drove the Algonquins out of southern Ontario and disrupted the fur trade for a time, though the French were able to re-establish trading posts and forts in the late 1660s. When France ceded its dominion over Canada to Great Britain in 1763, Ontario quickly became one of the Canadian provinces most closely tied to England. In the 1770s and 1780s, loyalists fled to Ontario from the 13 rebellious American colonies. They were later joined by more immigrants from the U.S., who came to claim some of Ontario's plentiful land. The province's location on the Great Lakes made it a flashpoint in the War of 1812, when Britain and the young U.S. went to war a second time.

August 1950 - Tragedy on the Thames
Launch capsizes at Springbank Park, leaving four dead, three injured A summer pleasure cruise on the Thames River turns to tragedy when a 17-foot launch carrying nine passengers and its pilot overturns above the old dam at Springbank Park on the afternoon of August 13. Four people drown, including a 22 year old man who was engaged to be married. His fiance survives the tragedy. Witnesses report the boat was turning around to return to its dock when the accident occured. The incident prompts a provincial inquiry about the legality of private boat operaters offering unregulated tours along the river. E. V. Buchanan, manager of the London utility which operates Springbank Park, argues that the hire boats do not receive any license or permission from the city to operate on the Thames. "We don't want to have anything to do with them. We've told them, year after year, to get out. But they don't," says Buchanan, but notes that the Thames River is a Dominion waterway and beyond the jurisdiction of the city. July 1945 - Housewives Riot Over Potatoes
In the middle of the greatest potato shortage since the famine of 1919, hundreds of housewives stormed stalls at the Covent Garden Market to claim a share of the precious tubers for sale.

Sublimating Ontario History: Gary Kulesha's new opera at the University of Toronto
As its first offering of the 2000-2001 season, the Opera Division at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music presented four performances of Gary Kulesha's latest work, The Last Duel , between November 2 and 5, 2000. The plot is based on an 1833 incident in Perth, involving the schoolteacher Elizabeth Hughes and her two suitors, John Wilson and Henri Lelièvre, which resulted in a death and a legislation banning duels by pistols in Upper Canada. The opera's final scene, its longest, was also its most successful. Kulesha developed a more sustained musical argument here, and related it closely to the dramatic situation. He composed a large-scale passacaglia, which subsumed Elizabeth's music in its inexorable momentum, trapping her tightly in the obligation to "follow the path of duty" by marrying the man who provoked the duel "on her behalf". Raffi Armenian kept things moving with his no-nonsense conducting, but could not always prevent the orchestra from overwhelming the singers. The cast of November 5 was remarkably even, and was challenged by the new score into giving concentrated performances. Colin Ainsworth [Henri Lelièvre] stood out because of his elegantly produced voice and sensitive phrasing. Tina Winter [Elizabeth Hughes] helped to increase the effect of the last scene with her committed acting, while Michael Sproule [John Wilson] never allowed others to overshadow his more prosaic character.

A History of White River, Ontario The small, Northwestern Ontario community of White River came about because of it's hearty climate, beautiful landscape and abundant resources. However, there was a more important factor: location.
Today's CP Rail Station With the completion of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1961, elements of the outside world began to trickle into White River and it ceased to be an exclusive railway town. The highway brought new industries and businesses particularly relating to the tourism sector. A new mode of transportation was established in the form of White River Airways. Slowly the railway was becoming less prominent. Abitibi Price established a lumber mill in the 1950's which is now owned and run by Domtar Forest Products. Our little railway community has developed into a booming lumbering community. We have opened stores, motels and restaurants. We have certainly come a long way! The next time you are in White River why not stop at the Historical Society Museum located on Elgin Street and view some of the photos and artifacts displayed about White River and its rich and colourful history. You can also stop at the Tourist Information Centre for a tour of an authentic C.P.R. Caboose, one of the very few left in Canada!

    http://www.randonneursontario.ca/history/pbphist.html
History of PBP: Racing and Touring
by Robert Lepertel , translated by Johnny Bertrand In 1891 the Petit Journal organized the first Paris-Brest-Paris, a real success judging by the over 400 registrants. Pierre Giffard, head of the newspaper, decided that the event would be held once a decade, given the difficulty of the event-1200 KM on the roads of the day, before the invention of asphalt! Sixteen checkpoints were planned and the headlines of the newspaper read "National Bicycle Race ...". Charles Terront won the race in 71:35 with an average of 17.590 KPH on the way out and 16.780 on the way back. Jiel Laval was second at more than eight hours behind Terront and Coulliboeuf was third. Fewer than thiry finished the race; many coming in days later. In 1911 Emile Georget won in 50:13, beating Lapize by 0:21. Ernest Paul was 0:35 off the pace and Cornet finished fourth. Drafting crews were not allowed, but racers could change bicycles. Tourists were not allowed a change of bikes; as a precaution against cheating, bikes were tagged. In 1931 an Australian won. Hubert Opperman won in a sprint to the finish, beating Marcel Bidot. Sir Hubert Opperman, a dear friend, who's always Oppy to us, keeps in touch. He just celebrated his 83rd birthday on the bike and will surely be happy to help us celebrate PBP's centennial anniversary in 1991.
