Essay discussing issues surrounding the ontario government's proposal to privatize universities.

NO PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN ONTARIO! New university admissions policy: Intelligence is useless without a huge family income!
I finally got around to updating this; sorry it took so long.

My name is Laurel. I am an Ontario university student. I am here to talk about education. The Conservative government in Ontario has decided to allow private universities into our province.
Soon-to-be former premier Mike Harris and the Minister of Colleges and Universities, Dianne Cunningham, have said that post-secondary education is ACCESSIBLE in Ontario. Our province already has the second highest tuition rate in Canada. Since Premier Harris took office in 1995, tuition has risen 60%. Unless you're in a graduate or professional program; those are deregulated (also thanks to the Harris Tories) and have faced much greater increases. Want an example? University of Windsor Law is deregulated, and first-year Law students this fall will have a tuition increase of 43%. The average student debt upon graduation from a four-year program is $25 000. (For more information on these issues, visit my Enough is Enough page.)

Newsflash The Internet actually must be quite a democratic medium. A recent online edition of Canada’s national newspaper (eastern anglophone division) ran an opinion poll on the question: " Have you ever Googled yourself? " More than three-quarters of all respondents answered Yes. As Jacques Derrida might point out, signs of this sort can no doubt be read in various ways. But three-quarters of online newspaper readers Googling themselves does seem remarkable, in one way or another. Is it just that the Me Generation is nowadays back to the future too, e.g.? Or does healthy democratic political participation always begin with a healthy respect for yourself?
NOT ANOTHER HURRICANE .. and meanwhile, is media baron CONRAD BLACK going to jail?

The Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors
Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care profession that focuses on prevention and uses natural methods to promote healing.
In Canada, naturopathic practice is regulated under provincial law in four provinces: British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan. Regulation in Alberta under new legislation is expected this year. At present, naturopathic doctors (NDs) are the only health professionals in Ontario still regulated under the Drugless Practitioners Act of 1925. The process is underway (expected completion Fall 2006) to naturopathic doctors included in the Regulated Health Professions Act.
Registered naturopathic doctors are required to complete three years of pre-medical studies at a recognized university followed by fours years of full-time naturopathic medical education at an accredited college. After graduation, they must pass rigorous regulatory board examinations that are standardized across North America.
Naturopathic doctors examine, diagnose and treat patients with programs tailored to each patient and their health conditions. Treatment approaches can include any combination of clinical nutrition, botanical (herbal) medicine, acupuncture, Asian medicine, homeopathic medicine, physical therapeutics and lifestyle counseling. The treatment focuses on the underlying causes of illness rather than just the symptoms, often eliminating the need for long term medical care or prescription drugs.

A Strong Ontario Needs Strong Universities
Ontario has set out some ambitious goals to help ensure our province's continued strength, growth and quality of life. Strong universities are crucial to helping Ontario meet these goals. With the 2005 Budget, the government made significant steps in narrowing the gap between the quality of university education in Ontario and that provided by our economic competitors. Ontario universities look forward to working with government to develop initiatives that will improve both the access to and quality of a university education, and enhance Ontario's economic and social well-being.
