Fanshawe Students Petition the Provincial Government to Invest in Ontario's Colleges LONDON, MARCH 7 - Today, Fanshawe Student Union launched "YOU'RE Worth More," a campaign that is fuelled by students who are demanding that the Ontario government increase funding to colleges in the 2005-06 Ontario Budget. "YOU'RE Worth More" encourages students to stand up and make their voice heard through a postcard petition, which urges Premier McGuinty and his government to bring Ontario's chronically under-funded colleges up to the national average by 2007-08. According to its President, Fanshawe's first priority has been for improved funding to support a system that has been very much under strain. "Our student association will be joining others across the province in order to hit the halls to educate, encourage, and inspire students to tell the provincial government that they will not tolerate that Ontario colleges rank tenth out of the 10 provinces in Canada in per-student funding. Students are demanding that the Ontario government commit to increasing funding to Ontario colleges in the 2005 provincial Budget to reach the national average by 2007-08," said Kerrie McQuaig. "I encourage all students and concerned citizens of London to take this opportunity to get involved by signing the petition which tells Premier McGuinty and Finance Minister Sorbara that Ontario's colleges and students are worth more!"

Ontario government takes over two more school boards
Last Updated Wed, 28 Aug 2002 14:55:01 TORONTO - The Conservative government in Ontario has taken over two more large school boards after trustees refused to present balanced budgets.
Elizabeth Witmer Education Minister Elizabeth Witmer said Tuesday that the government would appoint supervisors, not yet named, to run the Toronto and Hamilton-Wentworth boards. The announcement, expected after the boards failed to make budget cuts, followed the appointment of a supervisor to run the Ottawa-Carleton board last week. Witmer told a media conference that she was doing what was best, and the supervisors were appointed "in order that we can continue to put our students first." The trustees who had refused to make the cuts required to balance the two boards' budgets have also said they were placing students first. Witmer went out of her way to praise the chairs of both boards, who she said had tried to deliver balanced budgets. But she attacked other trustees who resisted making the necessary cuts, saying they have "not yet demonstrated a willingness to meet their financial and legal obligations."

Ontario ups aid for hep-c victims excluded from national deal May 9, 2000 COLIN PERKEL TORONTO (CP) - The Ontario government is increasing to $25,000 its aid for people who have picked up hepatitis C from tainted blood but who are excluded from a national compensation program. Activists praised the announcement by Premier Mike Harris Tuesday, while condemning Prime Minister Jean Chretien for leaving thousands of victims out in the cold. "Our government has worked for years to compensate all victims fairly and equally," Harris said in announcing the increased compensation. More than a year ago, the Ontario government said it was setting aside $200 million for all hep C victims of bad blood. The province also said it would compensate those excluded from a $1.2-billion federal-provincial package, which applies only to those who contracted the disease between 1986 and 1990. Cheques of $10,000 were immediately sent to those who had not benefited from the federal package, victims who will now receive a further $15,000 after Tuesday's announcement. The province is prepared to give the full amount of $25,000 to victims who have since been identified but can't access the federal compensation package, which excludes some 5,000 blood victims - 2,200 of whom live in Ontario.

    A Commentary by - John R. Hunt - June 2000 - CBC
Much of the Northern way of life is so much different than that of the urban dweller. So much so, that when urban living political and bureaucratic administration reform or create policy, they often do so without understanding the full process they twiddle. When policies or programs change, many unwritten parts of a process are yanked out by less than a full understanding of impact. Such policy makers are indeed, 'out of touch'. Policy is developed in a 'downtown' setting, without the input of the operations personnel, and the constituent. In private business, this type of policy making is the core motivation that moves people to consider and install management control in the form of a union. Is that where Ontario is headed? John. R. Hunt, who lives in Cobalt, and presents an opinion feature on CBC Radio's morning show in Northeastern Ontario, considers this below.

Canada: Ontario government bends to pressure for a public inquiry into e-coli deaths
By Lee Parsons 3 June 2000 Use this version to print Ontario's Tory government has announced a judicial inquiry will be held into the contamination of the water supply in the rural town of Walkerton and the resulting deaths of at least seven people. But the Tories are resisting pressure that the inquiry investigate the province's water management system. They continue to insist that the Walkerton tragedy had nothing to do with their cuts to the Environment Ministry's budget and workforce or with the privatization of water-testing. Likewise, the Tories have dismissed suggestions that the off-loading of provincial government responsibilities onto municipalities could have impacted on Walkerton's ability to maintain its water system, or that largely unregulated industrial livestock production might have resulted in fecal matter getting into Walkerton's water supply. Seven Walkerton residents, including a two-year-old child, are known to have died from kidney failure or other complications caused by infection from O157: H7, a deadly strain of the e-coli bacteria. The Coroner's Office is also investigating the deaths of four elderly people that occurred before it was known, or at least publicly revealed, that Walkerton's water supply was contaminated. Initially believed to have been natural, the deaths are now thought to have been caused by e-coli. More than 20 Walkerton residents, many of them children, remain hospitalized.

Ontario Government Cuts Funding for Essential Health-Care Items But Retains Abortion Funding TORONTO, May 19, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Apart from a massive tax-hike, the Liberal Government in Ontario, in its budget released yesterday, has cut funding for eye exams, physiotherapy and chiropractics while retained full funding for abortion on demand. The Family Coalition Party (FCP), the only provincial pro-life political party in Ontario, has denounced the budget noting that "This government has added or increased 50 new fees, such as healthcare premiums and driving licence fees. These fees, for the average family, amount to a tax increase of 24%."
The tax hike is so severe that political experts are wondering if the public backlash against the Liberals may spill over to affect the success of the federal Liberals in the upcoming election. The move also violates Ontario Liberal election promises, as Ontario Finance Minister Greg Sorbara admitted as he presented the budget.

Ontario government to implement new self-regulation system for public accounting The Ontario provincial government has just announced its response to the Daniels review of public accounting in Ontario. The result is a new blueprint for public accounting licensing, standards and governance. The announcement follows the passage in December 2002 of Bill 213, which opened up public accounting licences to Certified General Accountants (CGAs) and Certified Management Accountants (CMAs), while noting that standards of practice would be determined at a later date. Under the new system, the practice of public accounting will be open to qualified chartered accountants, certified management accountants and certified general accountants who meet new, high standards of practice. A reconstituted Public Accountants Council (PAC) will be appointed to oversee public accounting in the public interest. It will consist of four chartered accountants, two certified general accountants and two certified management accountants to be appointed by the accounting bodies, and seven public members, including the chair, to be appointed by the government.
