Ontario government must invest in post-secondary education Without a significant injection of long-term, predictable and stable public funding, Ontario’s colleges and universities will never have the resources to reduce tuition fees, nor provide staff and faculty with decent wages and working conditions. Ottawa – Larry Brown, Secretary-Treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), has written to Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, urging him to improve access to affordable, high quality post-secondary education by providing long-term, predictable and stable public funding. Larry Brown Brown also cautioned the premier about accepting certain recommendations that are expected in a forthcoming report by former Ontario Premier Bob Rae. In May 2004, the Ontario government appointed the former premier to conduct a comprehensive review of the design and funding of Ontario's post-secondary education system. Mr. Rae is expected to provide his report and recommendations to the government in February 2005. In his letter to Premier McGuinty, Brown notes that “there is plenty of evidence which suggests that without a significant injection of long-term, predictable and stable public funding, Ontario’s colleges and universities will never have the resources to reduce tuition fees, nor provide staff and faculty with decent wages and working conditions.”

Ontario government still wants to privatize the LCBO OLBEU says Liberal promises not to
sell off the province's highly-profitable liquor retailing agency cannot be trusted
Toronto - The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) remains vulnerable to privatization, despite repeated promises to the contrary by the province's Liberal government, says the union representing LCBO employees.
The LCBO generated record sales of $3.3 billion in the last fiscal year, resulting in $1.04-billion in profits for Ontario taxpayers. The agency is often described as the single most profitable liquor retailer in the world. Private corporations have been lobbying for decades to get their hands on it.
"Unfortunately the government is still contemplating privatization," says John Coones, president of the Ontario Liquor Boards Employees' Union (OLBEU/NUPGE). "It doesn’t seem to make any difference which government is elected to power, they all seem to be willing to give up high annual profits and social responsibility for a one time infusion of money," Coones adds.

    TOWARD DEMOCRATIC REFORMS,
BUT MUCH MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE
Thursday, November 18, 2004 OTTAWA - Today, as Ontario Minister for Democratic Renewal Michael Bryant announced new democratic reform initiatives, Democracy Watch called on the Ontario government to ensure changes are made, and to expand its reform plan to address clear problems with government accountability and corporate responsibility in Ontario. The Ontario government's moves to fix the date of elections, restrict government advertising leading up to elections, and giving the Auditor General the power to report on the actual level of government deficits and debt are all steps in the right direction, as are the new announcements to consult with the public on changes to the political donations system and voting system, but much more needs to be done. "Even if the Ontario Liberals make all the changes they have promised, the Ontario government will remain too corporate-driven and unaccountable between elections, and corporations in Ontario will remain far too unaccountable" said Duff Conacher, Coordinator of Democracy Watch.

  • Ontario Government Announces Challenge Fund Awards July 2, 1998 Cutting edge research at U of T just got a big boost from the provincial government. Energy, Science and Technology Minister Jim Wilson announced on June 29 a $51 million dollar commitment for research initiatives at several institutions across the province, with U of T receiving funding commitments for six of the 11 projects. The financing will come from the Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund, a provincial agency established last year with a mandate to invest $500 million over 10 years to promote research excellence and partnerships between business and research institutions. Universities and hospitals applying to the ORDCF must have already secured a minimum of one-third of the total project cost from the private sector. "This is a clear measure of confidence by all investors in Ontario's potential as a world leader in research technology," Wilson said. "We're giving research excellence a home in Ontario."

ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT COMMITTEE UPDATE ONTARIO GOVERNMENT MAKES PUBLIC ITS FIRST SET OF ACCESSIBILITY PLANS UNDER THE ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT, 2001 Thursday, March 11, 2004
    SUMMARY
On Thursday, March 11, 2004, the Ontario government at last made public the first series of annual accessibility plans for each Ontario government ministry, as is required under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001.
You can visit these on the internet at: http://www.gov.on.ca/citizenship/accessibility/english/planning-ministries.htm
    MORE DETAILS
According to the relevant provisions of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001, which were passed into law in December, 2001 and which were proclaimed in force on September 30, 2002, the Ontario government's various ministries were each required to develop, to adopt and to make public their first annual accessibility plan by September 30, 2003. Similarly, public sector organizations such as municipalities, school boards, universities, colleges, hospitals and public transit providers were required to make their first annual accessibility plans public on that date. As many will remember, when September 30, 2003 arrived, the Ontario government did not fulfil this requirement. On that date, the Ontario public was embroiled in a provincial election campaign, culminating in an election two days later, on Thursday, October 2, 2003. On September 30, the Ontario government, then under the Progressive Conservative party, announced that because the election was in progress, the government would not release its accessibility plans.
