Terry Fox Runs
One person can make a difference. When Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope run across Canada on April 12, 1980 his goal was to raise $1 for every person in Canada for cancer research. That would have been about $24 million in 1980. The Terry Fox Foundation says that in the last 25 years more than $360 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name. Just yesterday, Ujjal Dosanjh, the Canadian federal Minister of Health, gave a $10-million grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada to the Terry Fox Foundation. And the marathon continues....

"During the election the government promised 'immediate relief ' for hospitals," said OHA President Hilary Short. "Today’s announcement honours this key promise to the people of Ontario and is particularly important because it comes with just five weeks left in the fiscal year."
During the election the government also promised to bring "stability to our hospitals by providing adequate multi-year funding." To move forward with the government's plans to shorten waiting times for care and bring more full-time nurses back into the hospital workforce, an essential next step is moving forward with keeping this landmark commitment.

Toronto: Today, Tony Dagnone, Chair of the Board of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) and Hilary Short, OHA's President and CEO made a pre-budget presentation to the Ontario Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs.
"Our sole purpose was to present key recommendations to the Ontario government in keeping with our desire to protect our publicly funded Medicare system," said Tony Dagnone.
While Ontario hospitals are leaders in accountability and efficiency, they face a total shortfall of $420 million for 2003/04. That is in addition to the more than $1 billion in debt accumulated due to under-funding over the past several years.

Ont. should reduce e-government service projects
By Steve Erwin

TORONTO (CP) Some 40 per cent of Ontario government information technology projects fail to meet expectations by going over budget or missing deadlines, according to an independent review of the province's IT spending. The report by former auditor general Denis Desautels suggests the province limit start-ups of electronic services projects and "significantly" improve the way it manages their development in order to save taxpayers money. It also suggests the Ontario government has its own staff manage the projects from beginning to end, rather than leaving the fate of projects in the hands of the private sector. And it suggests contracts with private IT developers include "off ramps" that allow the government to terminate a deal with an underperforming partner. "Experience shows that you're almost better off (having a project managed) from someone inside rather than an outside provider," Desautels said Thursday at the Ontario legislature. Generally, Desautels said Ontario does a fair job at developing and maintaining so-called e-services which can include everything from giving police online access to criminal records, to allowing anglers to obtain fishing licences electronically.

Background The Bottom Line Brief History of Electricity in Ontario ... Bill 100 Explained: Greenpeace's submission to the Ontario government The Ontario government is trying to restructure the electricity supply in Ontario but they are ignoring renewable sources of electricity while trying to revive costly and dangerous aging nuclear plants. The government is asking to hear from the public until later this month. Please take some time to let them know that you want real, clean and sustainable energy. We were requesting that Canadians urge the Ontario government to adopt clean energy. The deadline for submissions to the government committee on Bill 100 was late August, 2004, so that action is now closed.

Northeast Regional Co-ordinating Centre On October 20th, 1986, the Ontario (Canada) Government announced that it would provide up to $5 million a year over the next four years to establish a new Northern Ontario distance education access network. The project was announced jointly by the Colleges and Universities Minister Gregory Sorbara and Education Minister Sean Conway in a combined video and audio press conference that linked Toronto, Sudbury, and Thunder Bay. Community access points throughout Northern Ontario have been established since that announcement with the objective of increasing the availability of secondary and post-secondary education in both French and English for northern Ontario residents. Each access point is equipped with "conventional" distance education technologies such as audio and video tape playback machines, audio conferencing units, and IBM and ICON computers. As well, each site has a facsimile machine. While the bulk of the money being provided by the Government will fund the capital and operating costs of the network, the project will also make funding available to colleges and universities for the acquisition and/or development of distance education programs. On March 3rd, 1987, the Ontario Government announced an initial series of grants to 24 post- secondary distance education projects worth a total of $1,241,205. Most of these projects involve collaboration among institutions. The largest provides funding of up to $705,000 over the next four years that will allow registered nurses in northern communities to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing via distance education. The program is to be developed by Laurentian University in Sudbury and Lakehead University in Thunder Bay.
