The Physical Geography of Northern Ontario To many people, Northern Ontario is simply a huge expanse of lakes, rocks and trees. Lots and lots of trees. In some ways, that impression is right; there are areas of Northern Ontario that are remarkably uniform. Even so, there are distinct sub-regions that we can divide Northern Ontario into, based on underlying physiology, biota or even watersheds. The point is that all of these sub-systems are intertwined. The underlying rock in many ways defines the life capable of surviving on top of it, and all sub-systems are subject to climate. It's like trying to describe the taste of a salad ingredient by ingredient; still, it won't hurt to try. A look at the relief of Ontario (image at left: 200k expanded) gives us a rough view of the major physiographic divisions in Ontario. At the broadest level of first-order realms, Ontario as a whole can be pretty well squeezed into either the Interior Plains, the Hudson Bay Lowlands or the Canadian Shield, with the dividing line going something like this: The Interior Plains
Very little of Northern Ontario falls into the domain of the Interior Plains. Broadly, the only section of Northern Ontario that does is Manitoulin Island. It's this one exception that led Chapman and Putnam to lump Manitoulin with Southern Ontario in

http://142.51.17.253/jrp/nots/geograph.htm
What precisely is Northern Ontario? It's not easy to pin down, since there are a number of definitions floating about. However, the area delineated by the census divisions in the northern three-quarters of the province is generally accepted as the limits of the region. You can see a map of these regions (70k) by clicking on the icon at left , as well as check the most recent population statistics on these divisions.
Unlike the provinces themselves, Northern Ontario isn't a strongly defined region. In addition to the administrative definition of Northern Ontario's borders mentioned above, many people maintain their own definition of the region. Anecdotal boundaries include "anything north of Barrie", which is a bit of a stretch, unless you happen to live in Toronto. In addition to the cultural and administrative definitions, you could look at Northern Ontario as a separate physical region from the rest of the province. In all, there are a number of ways of defining Northern Ontario, all of which are probably valid. Despite the fuzziness of the line, there are differences between the northern and southern halves of the province. Why is this region distinct?

Education is of the highest priority for ECO. In its public education and school programs, ECO will emphasize the importance of preserving this diverse and unique landform. A key objective of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve program is the promotion of education, and ECO will help to fulfill that objective. ECO's Education Sub-Committee continues to pursue this goal by preparing teacher resources for bringing the escarpment into the classroom. These resources are curriculum relevant and will be made available on-line beginning in the fall of 2002, making them accessible and useful to teachers of all grade levels across Ontario. This project has been made possible through a partnership with the Institute for Outdoor Education and Environmental Studies of the Bluewater District School Board. In addition, both the Niagara Escarpment Commission (NEC) and the Cliff Ecology Research Group from the University of Guelph will be providing the most current research on the escarpment for this project.

The sheer size and diversity found within this country make writing a national geography a formidable task. However, Clark and Wallace have done an admirable job of producing such a volume. Making Connections: Canada's Geography is successful in its aim of leading students to discover our country's geography. It provides a comprehensive study of Canada's complex and interrelated geographic elements. The main theme is "making connections" and this is what students who use this book will do. The reader is encouraged to take responsibility for her/his learning and to make connections between elements of the physical environment, between the human environment and the physical environment, and between elements of the human environment. The book is rich in content and skills and offers students a wide range of knowledge and techniques to effectively understand the geography of Canada and the role it plays in the global community.

69. Geography In Ontario
Multiple levels of geography are used within ontario to describe populations. There are three main geographic coding systems used within ontario,
http://www.apheo.ca/indicators/pages/resources/geography_in_ontario.htm
Resources Geography in Ontario Standard Geographical Classification The Standard Geographical Classification (SGC) is a system of names and codes representing areas of Canada. It consists of a three-tiered hierarchy - province or territory, census division, and census subdivision. Lower levels of Census geography such as Census Tracts (CTs), the former Enumeration Areas (EAs), and the latest grouping Dissemination Areas (DAs), are less commonly used for collection of health data but can be used for analysis based on recoding from the postal codes (see later discussion of postal code system). CTs, EAs and DAs are available for Census data and can be useful for regrouping into some level of geography lower than the CSD level for "community level" analysis. Most data produced by Statistics Canada uses this system including Census data, population estimates and projections. MOHLTC Residence Coding System Residence codes are also the basis of the public health unit geography in Ontario. Many health units coincide with counties, however, in some cases, marked with an asterisk in the table below, a county will fall into more than one health unit area. For this reason, when aggregating data which is based on census geography it is preferable to group CSDs rather than CDs into health units. The highest level of geography in the MOHLTC's system is the Health Planning Region. The boundaries of these regions differ from those for other Ontario Ministries such as the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Community, Family and Children's Services. The MOHLTC's seven current Health Planning Regions, outlined in the table below, replaced the five previous regions in 1998.

ISBN 1-55028-713-3. Subject Heading:
Ontario, Southwestern-History. Grades 9 and up / Ages 14 and up. Review by Julie Chychota. excerpt:
In Beautiful Ontario Towns , Fred Dahms explores the recent popularity and economic growth of ten Southwestern Ontario towns in relation to geography, geology, and history. He based his selection of towns upon the following criteria: "Each had to be within a two-hour drive of the major cities of Southern Ontario. None were to have a population over ten thousand, and none were to be swamped by creeping urbanization. The architecture of each community had to reflect local geology and building materials. All had to be appealing to visitors and to those who might wish to move to them permanently. The selection needed to reflect the diversity and complexity of Ontario's beautiful rural communities. Local economies had to be healthy and attractive to potential migrants. All needed to be engaging, prosperous places with friendly residents and helpful merchants."
The following places were finally chosen: Creemore, Dunnville, Elora, Fergus, Meaford, Neustadt, Paisley, St. Jacbos, St. Marys and Thornbury. In or near these communities you will discover crafts, breweries, fine dining, historic limestone architecture, sandy beaches, and outstanding fishing, skiing, hiking and caving. Like most Ontario settlements, all began at dam sights providing power for sawmills and gristmills. In many, these early industrial buildings have been recycled into trendy shops or restaurants. In some, local culture dominates, while elsewhere, entrepreneurial activity has transformed the character of the towns. Many offer historic properties and new homes at prices far lower than any in the city. All provide pleasure and stimulation for the day-tripper or shopper, and affordable properties for those seeking a home away from the city.

from within the the entire eastern area of the Province of Ontario, Canada. If you have access to a road map of Ontario, locate Toronto, our Province's Capital and principal city, and then travel north east along the north shore of Lake Ontario. When you've located the town of Trenton, draw an imaginary line northward toward Bancroft. From Bancroft extend your imaginary line almost due easterly toward the City of Ottawa, our Nation's Capital, which is located on the Ottawa River. In a generalized sense, everything south and east of this imaginary line, between the Ottawa River on the north and the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario on the south are included in the area that we normally designate as eastern Ontario. The following Counties fall within the eastern Ontario area:
and Ottawa/Carleton.
