To the uninitiated, the region seems like endless rugged landscapes of rock and trees with a bit of water thrown in the mix. However, if you take time to explore beyond the well-travelled road and venture off the highway, you'll discover that Northern Ontario has much more to offer. One-sixth of the landscape is covered with lakes and rivers that historically have served as major transportation routes, but now offer recreational opportunities for present-day explorers. In fact, the Iroquois called this region Kanadario , or "sparkling water."

What is Geography? What is Where and Why it's There According to the National Geographic Society, "Geography for its own sake offers a fascinating realm of knowledge that can enrich our lives. Conversely, a lack of geographic understanding can diminish us as individuals, blunt the success of our international economic and political ventures, and dilute our strength as a nation." Geography is one of the world's oldest disciplines. The Greek writer, Herodotus, sixth century, B.C., made the first attempt to describe the world and explain the differences among cultures. He believed that characteristics of a culture came from the environment from which they lived. He asked the question that remains as one of the principal research questions of geography: "How do humans and environment interact?" Geography studies relationships between people, places, and environments by mapping information about them in a spatial context. (Geography for Life: 1994)

Why Geography? I have been interested in geography and travel ever since I was an elementary
school student in Canada. I remember clearly my first visit to Chapel Hill, North Carolina when I was 14 years old. I had talked my father into detouring off the main highway to visit this charming college town, despite his desperate hurry to get our family to Florida. I loved Chapel Hill then and I still do today albeit from a somewhat more geographically sophisticated perspective. My fascination with geography reflects my interest in "real world" problems and with the discipline's potential to comprehend them in their totality, and to offer humane and ecologically defensible solutions to them. I also appreciate geography for
