The Grease Wars - Ontario vs. the USA
American Imperialism has infiltrated every facet of Ontario cuisine. First there was Coke and Pepsi, then McDonald's and KFC. Now the landscape is littered with everything from Denny's to Starbucks. This is manifest destiny of the Canadian stomach. Now the Americans are marking the Ontario landscape with silicon and grease - yes, that ever-popular American "family" restaurant Hooters has expanded into Canada. For those not familiar with Hooters, it's a tavern style restaurant that only hires gorgeous waitresses and then makes them wear the skimpiest uniforms.
Downtown Toronto, location of Hooters' latest Canadian "restaurant"
Hooters just opened up right beside where I work in downtown Toronto. Its inauguration sparked great hoopla and media attention, so much so that you'd think it was the first Hooters in Ontario. It's not, there are three others, but they are all in the 'burbs (North York, Brampton, Nepean). For the first couple of weeks Hooters had their "trainers" standing on the streets greeting people and naturally posing frequently in our daily tabloids. Trainers are seasoned Hooters professionals, who also happen to look like Pamela Anderson (a Canadian girl, by the way).

Tindall (DSMZ) for his helpful comments and corrections. Type strains that are not maintained by major culture collections should be obtained from the authors of published descriptions. The Editorial Board of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM), and the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP), decided in August 2002 that authors of papers in which new names and/or new combinations are proposed provide evidence that types are deposited in two publicly accessible recognized culture collections in two different countries (i.e. documents certifying deposition and public availability of type strains). Papers will not be accepted and new species, new subspecies or new combinations will not be cited in a Validation List without the certificates.
Warning: Several culture collections cited below are not publicly accessible recognized culture collections.

The decline in yellow perch harvested from Lakes Erie and Michigan, coupled with the apparent success of perch farms in the northcentral United States, has encouraged the establishment of commercial perch production in Ontario. The culture of yellow perch at any particular location in Ontario is still subject to approval by the local District Office of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. The following is a brief listing of research publications, popular press articles and reports which should be useful to anyone wishing to learn more about yellow perch. Published research papers can be accessed through most University libraries. Improving Distant Learning

    In Conclusion
... For Further Information Profile of the Distant Student The primary role of the student is to learn. Under the best of circumstances, this challenging task requires motivation, planning, and the ability to analyze and apply the information being taught. In a distance education setting, the process of student learning is more complex for several reasons (Schuemer, 1993):
    • Many distance-education students are older, have jobs, and families. They must coordinate the different areas of their lives which influence each other — their families, jobs, spare time, and studies. Distant students have a variety of reasons for taking courses. Some students are interested in obtaining a degree to qualify for a better job. Many take courses to broaden their education and are not really interested in completing a degree.

THE NORTH VIEW tells the story of Algoma and Northern Ontario; a region that forms the heart of the Great Lakes and Canada. This ruggedly dramatic landscape was formed over billions of years, sculpted by wind, rain, snow and glacial ice. Vast fresh water seas, thousands of lakes and flowing rivers continue to shape ancient granite mountains. This land has been central to the Natives, the French, the English and all the multi-national and multi-ethnic peoples that have followed. Truly, Algoma and Northern Ontario have played a pivotal role in every major stage of Canada's historical development to nationhood. The region's mysteries still enthrall and captivate enthusiasts as wide-ranging as hunters and anglers to hikers, bird-watchers and eco-tourists. Click on the topics history, geography, culture and recreation to experience a changing panorama of the region's distinctive seasons. ROMA ARE ALSO KNOWN AS THE GYPSIES,
    ROM, RROMA, ROMANI, RROMA
    History of the Roma:
The Roma people originally lived in north west India, and migrated to Persia from 224 to 642 CE. They lived under Arab rule in the Middle East from 642 to 900 CE, and eventually arrived in Constantinople. Some authorities believe that there may have been additional migrations at a later date. By the 14th and 15th centuries, they had drifted into western Europe. Some emigrated from Europe to the US and Canada in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Following World War II, and lately the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, there has been an additional westward migration. Most Roma settle down in a single location. Only about 5% of European Romanies are believed to be nomads. There are three language groups within the Roma: the Domari in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the Lomarvren in Central Europe, the Romani of Western Europe. Within these groups, the Roma are organized into 4 main and about 10 smaller tribes or nations.
    Names of the Romani people:
Many names have been used to refer to the Romani people, including: Cigano, Gypsies, Gipsies, Rom, Roma, Romani, Tsigani, Tzigane, Zigeuner, and others. Most Roma identify themselves either by their tribal name or by one of the names beginning with the prefix "Rom". Frequently, a prefix with a double "R" is used, as in "Rrom".

    Visiting Programmers/Journalists Program
In order to increase the international profile and sales of Ontario's cultural products, the Ministry supports the facilitation of meetings between foreign programmers and industry representatives with Ontario artists, programmers and organizations. The Ministry may also provide a per diem for programmers and journalists, where appropriate. Foreign programmers, foreign government partners, and foreign journalists may apply for assistance in developing itineraries that provide them with greater knowledge of Ontario's culture product. The program also provides limited assistance to Ontario programmers who may be seeking foreign venues and need assistance in making contacts and developing itineraries. Ministry staff will discuss programmers/journalists needs, develop appropriate itineraries and may escort programmer/journalists to meetings, if required. In some instances, financial support may be provided in the form of a per diem of up to $150 per day, to a maximum of 7 days. Priorities for support include:
    • Programmers from a festival, venue, cultural institution with the ability to support any Ontario artist invited as a result of the visit
