Case Western Reserve University Abstract
This paper describes efforts to date in providing a World Wide Web (WWW) based course in autonomous robotics. We will begin with a discussion of how the unique benefits of autonomous robotics courses are enhanced by offering them via the web. We will then discuss our WWW course and some special challenges we encountered during its development. Finally, we provide some conclusions drawn from our experience teaching this class.
About the authors...

1. Introduction
Engineering is about solving problems of practical import, and traditional classroom instruction alone may not be sufficient to educate a practicing computer engineer. Typical classroom exercises are usually designed to illustrate a point or demonstrate a technique rather than to approximate problems one will really face. Real world problems often lack a clear statement of what is needed, and rarely possess any single "correct" solution.
  • The use of robots forces students to deal with problems that are rich in complexity. Wheels and gears slip, sensors fail or give spurious readings, and the environment in which the robot exists is usually somewhat unstructured potentially introducing a huge number of unanticipated difficulties.

Caution: young children should not spend inordinate amounts of time in front of a computer monitor when more meaningful learning occurs with real materials and peers.

Ever So Slowly, Colleges Start to Count Work With Technology in Tenure Decisions
The key may be a growing movement for peer review of Web sites and online teaching materials By JEFFREY R. YOUNG Don't waste time teaching online or laboring over electronic course enhancements unless you've already climbed to the top of the tenure-and-promotion ladder. Review committees may not take technology work seriously, so stick to traditional academic activities, like publishing journal articles. That's the warning Gary Bradshaw heard from colleagues when he told them about his work on ePsych, an online resource to help introductory psychology students. He already had tenure when he started the online project, but he found out the hard way that the advice was sound. He was twice turned down for a promotion to full professor at Mississippi State University, where he is an associate professor of psychology. (The chairman of the psychology department, Stephen B. Klein, said he could not discuss personnel issues.) Mr. Bradshaw feels that work creating online teaching materials such as sophisticated Web sites or multimedia tools designed to help students slips through the cracks of the three traditional categories used in promotion: teaching, research, and service.

part of Teaching by Philip Greenspun This is a course for students who already have some programming and software engineering experience, e.g., at MIT the prerequisite is 6.170, Laboratory in Software Engineering. In 6.171 we try to give students some experience in dealing with those challenges that are unique to Internet applications:
    • concurrency 1000 people might be using the system at the same time
    • unpredictable load 100,000 users might show up tomorrow even if only 100 are using the system today
    • security risks an Internet application is forced to expose itself to attacks
    • opportunity for wide-area distributed computing, i.e., using "Web services" provided by other machines on the Internet
    • creating a reliable and stateful user experience on top of unreliable connections and stateless protocols
    • extreme requirements and absurd development schedules
    • requirements that change mid-way through a project, sometimes because of experience gained from testing with users
    • user demands for a multi-modal interface: Web, mobile (WAP), and voice

    • Internet skills are important for employment, quality of life, etc.; our students need to master them no matter what their field or profession. Like reading, writing, or mathematics, internet skills need to be applied across the curriculum. It is my contention that they are best learned through practice in many different areas, not taught in isolation.
Combination of technology with personal contact and support is optimal for pedagogy
    • For faculty: community is absolutely crucial for faculty seeking to successfully integrate technology into their teaching, including hands-on, discipline-specific teacher training; practical, project-based activities; just-in-time advice and help; long-term mentoring and support

Open Training Services This paper reports on the initial stages of developing training modules for study by students on the Internet in a course on Local Government. It has been written by a teacher with minimal background in computing and is intended to assist other teachers to develop skills in the area of training provision on the Internet whilst avoiding some of the difficulties encountered by the author. The paper canvasses some of the likely advantages of this type of training, in particular in comparison with traditional off campus study methods, as well as some of its limitations. Issues for teachers and learners in the provision of training courses on the Internet are discussed. The paper concludes with a description of the elements of a successful approach to the delivery of online training. Training modules developed for delivery on the Internet as part of RMIT's "Teaching and learning on the Internet Project" are within an Associate Diploma of Local Government. The model developed for this course is progressively being adopted by other courses in the Public Administration and Community Justice fields. With successful trialing and modification this model is anticipated to be extended across a broad range of courses at RMIT. Readers are invited to view materials associated with these modules at:

      Introduction
Integrated language and content instruction provides opportunities for learners to acquire a new language through the study of academic disciplines such as mathematics, science, and history. Also known as content-centered or content-based language learning, this approach is an effective way for both English language learners and learners of other languages to develop their language skills and their academic skills at the same time. Programs that use content-centered language learning include total and partial immersion, two-way (dual) immersion, bilingual education, sheltered English, and many early foreign language programs (e.g., content-based FLES). This Resource Guide provides links to publications, Web sites, teaching resources, and email discussion groups that offer information about teaching language through content-based instruction in K-12 and adult ESL programs and in foreign language programs.

An Online Course Course development funded by a PDE ACTS in PA Grant (Aligning Curriculum to Standards in PA) The Core Teaching Skills for an Information Age program trains Pennsylvania teachers to create standards-based, technology-rich learning experiences for students. The goal of this program is to position teachers to use technology effectively in their classroom, incorporating the established National Educational Technology Standards into lessons designed to meet PA Academic Standards. Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 offers these courses to teachers in participating schools via online instruction. The course is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week from any computer that can access the Internet. Online instructors will guide participants through activities and assure that all students have the necessary information to complete assignments and projects. The Core Teaching Skills for an Information Age online program consists of 3 separate courses. Each course contains 3 modules and is worth 1 PA Continuing Professional Education credit, which is the equivalent of 30 Act 48 hours. Parts 1, 2 and 3 must be taken in sequential order. Part 1 is a prerequisite to Parts 2 and 3. Parts 1 and 2 are prerequisites to Part 3.

Based on research and years of practice, this model helps teachers avoid the pitfalls and capitalize on the many benefits of cooperative learning. The skills and procedures taught in this course and practiced in applied assignments will enable educators to motivate students to develop important life skills for working in teams while learning subject matter more completely. Course Objectives
    • Identify major concerns and roadblocks to using group projects in the classroom. Identify major benefits and needs for teaching students cooperative group skills. Distinguish between cooperative, competitive, and individualistic approaches to learning. Understand what employers and life in a democratic society require of group members. Learn ways of structuring groups to take advantage of individual differences and maximize strengths.
