OMAN STUDIES CENTRE
for Documentation and Research on Oman and the Arabian Gulf
Aims and purposes
The Oman Studies Centre was founded in Germany in 1975 as a documentation centre on Oman and the Arabian Gulf. It is an independent, non-governmental and non-profit academic institution which mainly collects information on Oman to assist and coordinate research on Oman and to promote interest in Oman. In line with the Centre's interdisciplinary area studies approach, fields of interest cover a wide range from Oman's history, geography, culture, economy, arts, law, language, natural history and even include more marginal topics such as philately and numismatics.
In particular, the Oman Studies Centre aims at
  • encouraging the study of Oman's history and of the social, economic and cultural conditions in the Sultanate of Oman
  • facilitating access to information and publications on Oman
  • compiling bibliographic references on Oman and preparing bibliographies
  • promoting and coordinating research on Oman
  • providing up-to-date and correct information on Oman to researchers, travellers, journalists and businesspeople
Geographical scope
The geographical area covered by the Oman Studies Centre is that of the present-day Sultanate of Oman as well as areas which historically belonged to Oman or have been under Omani influence in the past (such as Sahil Uman - now the UAE -, the Makran coast of Iran and Pakistan, Zanzibar, and the East African coast).

GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY Geography Oman is the third largest country in Arabia and has a total land area of 309,500 sq. km., bordering Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It lies on the Tropic of Cancer. As a gateway between the Indian Ocean, East Africa and the Arabian Gulf, Oman’s location has always been strategically important. Oman overlooks the Arabian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Arabian Sea. Historically, it dominated regional commodity trading. Today, it has modernised its ports to adapt to the containerised shipping that is transforming the movement of consumer goods and commodities around the world. Lying on the south-east corner of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman has a 1,700 km coastline extending from the narrow Strait of Hormuz that separates Arabia from Iran in the north to the southern border with the Republic of Yemen. The country’s climate is varied, with humid coastal areas and a hot, dry desert interior. Its highest mountains, at just over 3,000 metres, enjoy a moderate climate all year round. Although rainfall

The capital is Muscat. Oman comprises a coastal plain and an interior region of hills and desert. Dates, limes, nuts, and vegetables are cultivated in the north and livestock are raised in the southwest, but the major product is oil. Natural gas production and copper mining were developed in the early 1980s to diversify the economy. The population is predominantly Muslim Arab, with Pakistani, Indian, and Zanzibari minorities. History
Occupied by Portugal in 1508 and Turkey in 1659, Oman came under Ahmad ibn Said of Yemen, founder of the present royal line, in 1741. It has had close ties with Britain since the 19th cent. Qabus bin Said overthrew the strict regime of his father, Sultan Said bin Timur, in 1970, instituted a program of liberalization and modernization, and put down (1975) leftist guerrilla forces operating in Dhofar prov., in the south. In 1980 the U.S. obtained the use of ports and airfields in Oman in exchange for economic and military aid. In 1981 Oman joined other Arab Persian Gulf nations in founding the Gulf Cooperation Council. The country opened its bases to international coalition forces against Iraq in the 1991 Persian Gulf War and to U.S. forces mounting strikes against Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden in 2001. In 1996 the sultan announced a new basic law that provided for a legislature with limited powers and guaranteed basic civil liberties for Omani citizens. In 2003 the lower house of the advisory council was freely elected for the first time.

Fortifications in the town of Mudhayrib, in the Sharqiyya region, by the Wahiba sands.
Photo courtesy of Valerie Hoffman The Sultanate of Oman occupies the southeast corner of the Arabian Peninsula, with coastline facing the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. Environmental protection is a priority of the Sultanate, and the United Nations Environmental Program has credited the country as having one of the best records in conservation, pollution control, and efforts to maintain ecological balance. Considerable geographic and climatic variety exists throughout the country, with desert along the western border and a lush monsoon climate in the south. A number of protected nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries are scattered throughout the country. Grassy parks and gardens are prominent features of Oman's cities.
Arabic is the official language of Oman and three-quarters of the population is Ibadhi Muslim. Muscat, the capital, is a relaxed, cosmopolitan city, with great concern directed at aesthetic blending of modern development and historical structures.
