Fortifications in the town of Mudhayrib, in the Sharqiyya region, by the Wahiba sands.
Photo courtesy of Valerie Hoffman The Sultanate of Oman occupies the southeast corner of the Arabian Peninsula, with coastline facing the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. Environmental protection is a priority of the Sultanate, and the United Nations Environmental Program has credited the country as having one of the best records in conservation, pollution control, and efforts to maintain ecological balance. Considerable geographic and climatic variety exists throughout the country, with desert along the western border and a lush monsoon climate in the south. A number of protected nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries are scattered throughout the country. Grassy parks and gardens are prominent features of Oman's cities.
Arabic is the official language of Oman and three-quarters of the population is Ibadhi Muslim. Muscat, the capital, is a relaxed, cosmopolitan city, with great concern directed at aesthetic blending of modern development and historical structures.

Our Mission has conducted research and cultural management projects in cooperation with the Sultanate's Ministry of National Heritage and Culture since 1977. In different ways, and owing to an interdisciplinary approach, the Mission has illuminated the prehistory of this Arabian land. Originally the emphasis centred on localising the copper land Magan/Makkan which is known from cuneiform texts. The Mission is sponsored by the German Mining Museum and the Institute for Prehistory of the University of Heidelberg. Fieldwork in the Sultanate of Oman:

    Welcome to Sultanate of Oman
The Sultanate of Oman is located on the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula and has an area of approximately 309,500km It is bordered on the west by Saudi Arabia, to the northwest lie the United Arab Emirates and to the southwest is Yemen. The east coast meets with the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. The capital of Oman is Muscat , a cosmopolitan, but relaxed city, free from the hustle and bustle found in many of Arabia's other capital cities. In the south of the Sultanate, is Salalah , the administrative capital of the Dhofar region. The climate in Muscat is markedly different to that in Dhofar: during the winter, Muscat enjoys temperatures of, average, 30C, dropping to around 18 C at night. However, in the summer, Muscat bakes in 45-48 C, while Dhofar cools down in the light monsoon rain.
Oman is a surprisingly green country, particularly in Dhofar, due to its location on the monsoon paths. Landscaping and beautification are priorities of the Municipalities, and gardens, parks and grassy knolls line the main highway. The countryside is varied, from rugged mountain ranges to desert sands, to green, lush wadis (riverbeds). The Omani people are friendly and welcoming to visitors. Although Arabic is their main language, English is spoken frequently and is often used as the lingua franca. Despite their relaxed air, the Omanis are quite conservative people and respect for their privacy and, in particular, their religion, should always be observed.

    Welcome to Nizwa.NET
Nizwa is one of the largest cities in Oman and the capital of the interior region. It has a wealth of cultural and ancient landmarks, most prominent is Nizwa fort built over a period of 12 years and located in the city center. The fort is surrounded by ancient traditional souqs (markets) where the locals trade in traditional as well as imported merchandise, from vegetables to jewelry. Nizwa is an oasis in the enclosed by a series of mountains upon which the famous green mountain ( al Jabal al Akhdar ) lies. The city is also at cross roads that lead to southern Oman as well as the Dhahirah and Sharqiah regions.
Nizwa.NET is educational, public, web site with the purpose of spreading awareness about the country of Oman in the Middle East. Nizwa.NET started as "Nizwa Oasis" and hosted by geocities but due to the popularity of the site, it was often blocked when bandwidth reached its maximum limits. Nizwa.NET was born out of that site with pretty much the same information but with more flexibility and ease of navigation. Besides tourist information, the site focuses on issues related to agriculture and the environment. Besides original contents, some of the information on this site is collected over time from various sources that are indicated at the bottom of each page. I hope you will find the useful and if you have comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to send your feedback. Also you may contact me for advertising and promotion opportunities on this site. This site a lot of work, so if you use it please add a link back to the site and give credit where it is due. The Sultanate of Oman lies on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula facing the Arabian Sea. This position at a crossroads between Asia and the Mediterranean Sea has created a complex culture drawing on the country's Arab roots as well as its long-standing contracts with India, East Africa and the Middle East. For 5,000 years Oman has traded throughout the region, its ships have traveled to China and its caravans to Rome, giving the country a surprisingly cosmopolitan history. The 2005 Smithsonian Folklife Festival program on Oman will feature over 100 musicians, dancers, craftspeople and cooks representing cultural traditions from the desert, oases and sea. Sturdy leather and palm leaf milking baskets and decorative wool camel trappings from the Wahiba Sands region are made for easy transport by nomadic desert peoples and will provide a striking contrast to the heavy copper vessels and elaborate silver jewelry produced by craftsmen in the oases towns such as Nizwa, while proud boat builders from the ancient port of Sur will demonstrate skills that made Omani ships renowned throughout the Indian Ocean. The fabled frankincense that in some ways represented to the ancient Mediterranean world what oil does to modern economies still grows in the southern hills above Salala, and is still used throughout Oman. A section of the program will feature a variety of Omani adornments including aromatics such as frankincense, clothing, and jewelry.

    Aims and purposes
The Oman Studies Centre was founded in Germany in 1975 as a documentation centre on Oman and the Arabian Gulf. It is an independent, non-governmental and non-profit academic institution which mainly collects information on Oman to assist and coordinate research on Oman and to promote interest in Oman. In line with the Centre's interdisciplinary area studies approach, fields of interest cover a wide range from Oman's history, geography, culture, economy, arts, law, language, natural history and even include more marginal topics such as philately and numismatics.
In particular, the Oman Studies Centre aims at
    • encouraging the study of Oman's history and of the social, economic and cultural conditions in the Sultanate of Oman
    • facilitating access to information and publications on Oman
    • compiling bibliographic references on Oman and preparing bibliographies
    • promoting and coordinating research on Oman
    • providing up-to-date and correct information on Oman to researchers, travellers, journalists and businesspeople
    Geographical scope
The geographical area covered by the Oman Studies Centre is that of the present-day Sultanate of Oman as well as areas which historically belonged to Oman or have been under Omani influence in the past (such as Sahil Uman - now the UAE -, the Makran coast of Iran and Pakistan, Zanzibar, and the East African coast).
