The capital is Muscat. Oman comprises a coastal plain and an interior region of hills and desert. Dates, limes, nuts, and vegetables are cultivated in the north and livestock are raised in the southwest, but the major product is oil. Natural gas production and copper mining were developed in the early 1980s to diversify the economy. The population is predominantly Muslim Arab, with Pakistani, Indian, and Zanzibari minorities. History
Occupied by Portugal in 1508 and Turkey in 1659, Oman came under Ahmad ibn Said of Yemen, founder of the present royal line, in 1741. It has had close ties with Britain since the 19th cent. Qabus bin Said overthrew the strict regime of his father, Sultan Said bin Timur, in 1970, instituted a program of liberalization and modernization, and put down (1975) leftist guerrilla forces operating in Dhofar prov., in the south. In 1980 the U.S. obtained the use of ports and airfields in Oman in exchange for economic and military aid. In 1981 Oman joined other Arab Persian Gulf nations in founding the Gulf Cooperation Council. The country opened its bases to international coalition forces against Iraq in the 1991 Persian Gulf War and to U.S. forces mounting strikes against Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden in 2001. In 1996 the sultan announced a new basic law that provided for a legislature with limited powers and guaranteed basic civil liberties for Omani citizens. In 2003 the lower house of the advisory council was freely elected for the first time.

Main article: History of Oman The region of Oman was once known by its Sumerian name Magan . Oman constituted one of the Satrapies of the Persian Empire . It was incorporated by that empire around 563 BC After Oman’s development in the 3rd century BC, the Persians developed an empire in the 4th century BC. This empire lasted until the 7th century AD. In the beginning of the 1st Century AD Arab tribes began to settle into Oman. In 632 the Persian Empire lost power and Oman’s Arab character was established. In the year 751 the Ibadi Muslims made an imamate in Oman. An imamate is a country ruled by an imam, or any ruler who claims that he has descended from the prophet Muhammad. These leaders would exercise spiritual leadership over the country. The Ibadi Muslims are considered by other Muslims to be a branch of the

Background:
Oman lies at the eastern corner of the Arabian peninsula. Sharjah and Fujairah (UAE) separate the main part of Oman from the northernmost part of the state, a peninsula (Musandam) extending into the Strait of Hormuz.
Historically Omanis were seafarers and traders who dominated regional commodity trading in the Indian Ocean, East Africa and the Arabian Gulf. There were thus a succession of migrations which saw the growth of settlements along some parts of the East African coast.

      Oman's History
T he Sultanate of Oman, located on the Southeastern tip of the Arabian peninsula, was all but isolated from the outside world until the 1970's. However, Oman has a rich and ancient history as a trading empire whose influence spread well beyond its boundaries in the Middle East. The current government's economic plan emphasizes its rich history by expanding the country's small, but vibrant tourism sector. The tourism sector is growing within the Omani economy as visitors come to see Oman's archeological treasures and to enjoy its rich natural beauty and wildlife. To understand why Oman is a growing tourist attraction we must first examine its past and the history of its trading empire to see how Oman's history is influencing the current government's policies toward tourism.
O man has a rich trading history to go along with its ancient civilization as recent archeological survey's have dated settlements from as early as 8,000 years ago. This early civilzation was based on fishing and agricultural systems fueled by monsoon rains. Many of the crops grown today such as bananas, dates, and wheat have roots in these early agricultural systems. As early as 5,000 years ago the mineral wealth of Oman became evident as copper mines and smelters have been identified from excavations near the modern city of Sohar. Around 200 B.C. ships from Oman traded with Mesopotamia and India in products such as copper, building materials, and fine marble. From its earliest days then Oman presented a picture of an industrializing and flourishing society.

But there is much more in the heart of Oman to explore: the sense of respect for time, for people, and for nature. Come and taste a part of Oman's rich heritage, kept alive and uncganged for generations. It may help you understand tomorrow a little better. For its size, Oman boasts an unprecedented number of UNESCO-classified World Heritage Sites including Al-Blaid ; site of the ancient city of Zafar, Bat Bahla Fort , and R'as Al-Hadd; home to the rare Green Sea Tturtle. Oman's heritage features a prominent sea-faring tradition, as one would expect from a country with 1,700 Km of coastline.
Many museums and galleries around the secluded and historic harbours of Muscat and Muttrah illuminate the importance of the sea and, indeed, of water generally, throughout Oman's 5,000 year-old history.

If you are someone who has an understanding and appreciation of history, arts, architecture and the intricacies of a civil soceity, Oman is the place for you.
