Aubri Moench Introduction Task Resources Process ... Conclusion
Introduction
The Olympics have been an important part of history for hundreds of years. Many people today think that the spirit of the Olympics is being lost for a number of reasons. This WebQuest will help you to build an understanding of how the history of the Olympics is similar to as well as different from the Olympics of Ancient Greece. You are now a member of the planning committee for the next Olympic games. During your planning meeting, you have a surprise visitor. Milo of Kroton was an accomplished Olympic wrestler from 540 BC to 526 BC. He has arrived to see preparations for the upcoming Olympic events. Milo has been talking to citizens in the community and reading recent reports of the issues surrounding the Olympics. He comes to the committee very upset about the state of the Olympics. He is so upset that he calls on the chief Greek God of Zeus for assistance. Together, Zeus and Milo issue the following proclamation: If your committee can successfully convince Milo that the Olympics is still very similar to the Ancient Olympics, we will continute to be able to hold Olympic events. If, however, you fail to convince Milo, he will again call on Zeus to banish the Olympic games from us forever.
The Task
Your committee must research all of the four areas that Milo is interested in, using the resources provided on this WebQuest. Pairs of committee members will present their findings to each other and determine which areas are still the same today as they were in Ancient Olympic times. The committee will then create a group summary to convince Milo.

Statement of Deputy Attorney General Larry D. Thompson Before the Committee on the Judiciary United States Senate Concerning Security Concerns Regarding the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah May 31, 2001
Mr. Chairman, it is my privilege to appear before you today for the purpose of discussing the role of the Department of Justice in working with the State of Utah, with federal, state and local agencies, and with the Congress to ensure that the 2002 Winter Olympics will be safe and successful. As you know, I was confirmed a little over two weeks ago. I am just getting acquainted with all my responsibilities, and was delighted to learn that the Department has been actively involved in preparing for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Winter Games. The Department of Justice is deeply committed to working cooperatively to ensure that the 2002 Games are safe. This morning, I had the opportunity to tour some of the Olympic venues. It is a pleasure now to be sitting in this beautiful stadium which will host some the Olympic events. Salt Lake City provides a magnificent setting for these historic games. I want to do everything I can to ensure that people from all over the world can come to the Games, bring their families, enjoy the spectacular beauty of Utah and the excitement of world-class athletic competition, and feel safe and secure doing so. The Department has invested heavily in this goal. Our investment has been as a partner with federal, state, and local agencies in planning for, and preparing to provide, law enforcement and public safety support for the Games. We have invested funds in this effort, but more importantly, we have invested substantially in time, people, and energy.

State government takes direct control of Olympics
Financial fiasco brewing in Australia over Sydney Olympic Games
By Peter Stavropoulos 3 March 2000 Use this version to print In January, less than seven months before the opening ceremony, the New South Wales government took the drastic step of removing organisational control of the Olympic Games from the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG) and assuming responsibility itself. The takeover means that the NSW government will run all Olympic sporting venues and control 35,000 of the 50,000 contractors needed for the day-to-day operation of the Games. The move follows revelations that SOCOG has a debt of $193 million or almost twice the amount disclosed last December. The budget blowout was the result of a $76 million shortfall in ticket sales and $108 million loss of corporate sponsorship revenue. While the NSW government used the much-publicised shortfall in ticket revenue as the pretext, its decision to assume organisational control of the Games is not just related to immediate budgetary problem. The government fears, and with good cause, that the Olympics are going to cost substantially more than previously estimated and that a huge financial fiasco could emerge after the Olympic Games.
