The most common question asked about the 2004 Olympics is "Do you think Greece can pull it off?"
That's a tough question. Those with a cynical attitude towards the Greeks and their laid-back attitudes about life believe that it is impossible and the Olympics in Athens will be a disaster if they even materialize. They point to the chaos of modern Athens and what they describe as Byzantine politics and an Olympic commitee whose main agenda seemed to be the drapes in their offices instead of construction that was falling dangerously behind schedule. Some point to Salt Lake City and the scandals there and say "If the religious state of Utah can be corrupted by the money that the winter Olympics can bring in, what about Greece, where large sums of EEC money for social and infrastructure improvements end up in Swiss bank accounts and polititians and officials first order of business is to make sure they are financially secure before they worry about the needs of their constituents." But I believe the Olympics can be pulled off because I think the country is changing. I think the Greek attitude towards corruption and incompetance is being altered by the scrutiny Greece is receiving because of incidents in the last couple years. The anti-NATO demonstrations, the Clinton Riots and the sinking of the ferry boat Samina have made many Greeks realize that a handfull of idiots are making the whole country look like jerks. Because of this the Greeks are determined to pull off these Olympics and prove to the world and themselves that they are not one step away from being Third World, but they are a serious partner of the larger countries who are forging the future. They completed the Metro (almost), and even if they did forget to put in air-conditioning they have proven that some things can get (almost)done in Greece.

They were eventually discontinued by Emperor Theodosius I of Rome, who condemned them as a pagan spectacle, at the end of the 4th cent. A.D. Among the Greeks, the games were nationalistic in spirit; states were said to have been prouder of Olympic victories than of battles won. Women, foreigners, slaves, and dishonored persons were forbidden to compete. Contestants were required to train faithfully for 10 months before the games, had to remain 30 days under the eyes of officials in Elis, who had charge of the games, and had to take an oath that they had fulfilled the training requirements before participating. At first, the Olympic games were confined to running, but over time new events were added: the long run (720 B.C.

Since 1896, athletes from around the world have competed in the Olympics. Baron Pierre de Coubertin (father of the “modern” Olympics), believed that athletic competition between amateur athletes would help improve international relations. He faced strong initial opposition to his idea that sports could temper politics. Athens , the capital of Greece, hosted the first modern games . For more than a thousand years, another place in Greece - a sacred area called Olympia - hosted the ancient games. What do we know of those ancient games? How did they start? Why were they always held in Olympia? To learn the answers to those - and more - questions, we need to take a trip back in time to the Archaic Period of ancient Greece. What is the origin of the Olympics?

The Olympic Games, originally created to honor Zeus, was the most important national festival of the ancient Greeks, and a focus of political rivalries between the nation-states. However, all competitions involved individual competitors rather than teams. Winning an Olympic contest was regarded more highly than winning a battle and was proof of an individual arete or personal excellence. The winners were presented with garlands, crowned with olive wreaths, and viewed as national heroes. Although records of the Olympics date back to 776 BC when the Olympics were reorganized and the official "First Olympiad" was held, Homer's Iliad suggests that they existed as early as the 12th century BC. The games were held every four years in honor of Zeus, in accordance with the four year time periods which the Greeks called olympiads. Emperor Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them in the 4th century AD, and they did not occur again until they were reinstated in Athens in 1896. Originally, the Olympics was confined to running, but by the 15th Olympiad, additional sports were added the pentathlon (five different events), boxing, wrestling, chariot racing, as well as a variety of foot races of varying lengths, including a long-distance race of about 2.5 miles.

Among the many gifts bequeathed to the modern world by the ancient Greeks (eg democracy) is the idea of athletics and organised competitive sport, of which the ancient Olympic Games were the most famous. The word athlete is a Greek word and connected with the words athlos , a contest for a prize, and athlon , a prize. An athlete is thus a person who competes for a prize. Origin of the Games Despite the attribution of the games to such legendary heroes as Pelops and Heracles, the consensus of opinion in antiquity was that the first Olympics began in 776BC. They were held in honour of Zeus of Olympia and were thus a religious festival, unlike the modern Olympics. As Zeus was the king of the gods, so were his games the most prestigious of the four great Panhellenic Games (Olympian, Pythian, Isthmian and Nemean). They had a life of almost 1200 years, being closed down possibly in 393AD by the Emperor Theodosius the Great as being a pagan religious festival. Where were the Games held?

With five months til the summer games in Athens, teachers looking for curricular tie-ins are already rearing to go. The XXVIII Olympiad returns the games to its home of Athens, and it's a great chance to energize your classroom with all the possibilities for Social Studies, Language Arts, Math, Health and Science. There are several popular approaches teachers take in presenting a unit that prepares students for the summer games:
  • Have students research the history of the games, its traditions, past memorable moments and significant athletes
Have students research the city in which the games take place, give them each a travel budget, and have them develop individual itineraries to attend the games based on the budget they have
Have students research the events of the games, their nation's athletes participating in each event, and create a medals tracking sheet they can use to track their athletes while following the games over the summer

These games originally linked to the religious festivals of the cult of Zeus, were dedicated to the Olympian Gods. The games were held in Olympia located in the western part of the Peloponnese, 145 km west of Athens, Greece, and comprised of only a few events where any male youngster from the various cities of Greece could participate to show off their physical qualities. Olympia the ancient city of worship with its magnificent and elaborate shrines had a stadium which could accommodate 40,000 spectators. The games were first held here in 776 BC and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. Corebus , a cook from Elis is known as the very first Olympic champion in history by winning a run of approximately 192 metres. Stadion running, discus and Javelin were some of the early athletic events of that era. The victors received their first award of a palm branch from a Hellanodikis (Greek judge) soon after the competitions. The official award ceremony were held on the last day at the venue of the temple of Zeus and after announcing the winners, they were awarded with the sacred olive tree wreath (Kotinos) placed on their heads. Red ribbons were tied on the winners head and hands as a mark of victory. But in 393 CE, the ancient Olympic games came to a halt when the Roman emperor Theodosius I, abolished the Games.

Proclamation - The Truce - The Organisation - Arrangements for the Contests - The Events. Part I The rich mythology which decorates both the derivation and the consecration of one of the greatest institutions in the progress of mankind, known as the Olympic Games, as also their history and their resplendent rays during twelve centuries, as well as the enforced extinction of the Olympic Flame, were subjects of earlier talks of mine at Sessions of the Olympic Academy. On this occasion I will describe their proclamation, the truce, the organisation of the ancient Games, the arrangements for the contests, and the carrying out of an Olympiad, with as much detail as the time available allows me, so that I can give my audience a general idea of the immensity and significance with which these great Games were held in antiquity. 1. The Spondophori. The Olympic Heralds. Select official citizens of the region of Elis, accompanied by a brilliant retinue of the nobility of Elis, set out for all directions of the land, to proclaim that the rituals for the ceremonials of the Olympic Games were starting. They were called "Spondophori" and they proclaimed the Games, that is to say they announced them. They arrived at the City States as official representatives of the region of Elis, while the nobles of the Cities received them with honours and accepted the proclamation. From that moment the operation of the Truce was in vigour.
