The Olympics returns to its home: Athens, Greece. T he 2004 Olympic Games came to a close Sunday in Athens, Greece. The Olympics are held every two years, alternating between the Summer and Winter Games. The logo for the 2004 Athens Games features a drawing of a circular band of leaves called a wreath. If you watched the Olympics this year, you probably noticed that the medal-winners wore wreaths on their heads during the medal ceremony. These wreaths were meant to remind people that the very first Olympic Games were held in Greece thousands of years ago. While no one knows for sure exactly when the Olympics started, the earliest evidence of them dates back to 776 B.C.E. They continued, every four years, until the Roman emperor Theodosius I ended them more than 1,100 years later, in 393 C.E. Wreaths were the only prize given out at these ancient Olympic Games. It was considered a huge honor to win a wreath at the Olympics. Athletes were willing to dedicate years of their lives and risk horrible injuries training for the Olympics. It was to honor this tradition of sportsmanship that the modern Olympics were revived in the year 1896 C.E.

Olympics: Ancient Warriors
Newsweek Aug. 2 issue - In Olympic sports today, star athletes seem to stick around forever. Swimmer Jenny Thompson, 31, is headed to her fourth Games in Athens; hurdler Gail Devers, 37, to her fifth. But women's gymnastics has always been child's play. When Olympic veterans Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes and Kerry Strug returned-at ages 19, 19 and 18-to form the nucleus of the '96 team, they were seen as ancient warriors on their last legs. Quick Facts:
The Sports : In the Ancient Greek Olympics there were only ten sports while in modern day Olympics there are substantially more. Still, as in the modern games, they slowly added more. In the ancient games they had 4 running races, equestrian racing, wrestling, boxing, pancratium, pentathlon, and chariot races. In Modern Day Olympics they have gymnastics, triathlon, cycling, fencing, and volleyball to name a few, and of course there are all the winter sports. However, the sports of chariot races and pancratium have been discontinued.
*ANCIENT SPORTS*
Boxing
Wrestling
: ...Wrestling may have evolved from the original Greek games but it is very different today. In ancient Greece, there were two forms of wrestling. First there was upright wrestling. During this competition the combatants stood upright and the winner was the man who could throw the other to the earth. This was a sport of skill and grace rather than brute force. It was also part of the ancient Greek Pentathlon. The judges declared a looser if knees or the man's hips, back or shoulders touched the ground. It was held in a sandpit unlike the mats used today. That which is the same is that there can be no illegal moves such as hitting, gouging or twisting of hands, feet, arms or legs during the event.

Davies the link with Olympics ancient and modern
            By Simon Turnbull
            Published: 03 July 2005
No matter what the outcome of the big vote happens to be in Singapore on Wednesday, Britain's Olympic legacy will remain securely in place. Chris Davies is first-class proof of that. The postman who ran in the 5,000m for Britain at the European Cup in Florence a fortnight ago is a product of the Shropshire cradle of the modern Olympic Games. The 27-year-old has yet to stamp his authority on the global stage as an international athlete but he has a gold medal from the Olympian Games - plus an Olympic key-ring given to him by Juan Antonio Samaranch, when the outgoing president of the International Olympic Committee visited Much Wenlock back in 1994. As Samaranch acknowledged on his trip to A E Housman country: "Much Wenlock was where the modern Olympics really started." The quaint country town, set in the Shropshire hills, staged a revived version of the ancient Olympic Games in 1850 - 46 years before Pierre de Coubertin did so in Athens. The French baron managed to create his event on a grander stage, but it was Dr William Penny Brookes, a doctor-cum-philanthropist from Much Wenlock, who first campaigned for an international Olympic Games. It was only after visiting the Wenlock Olympian Games, which are still held annually, and meeting the good Dr Brookes that De Coubertin was inspired to take up the cause.

Swifter, Higher, Stronger "In the name of all competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules that govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams." And so the games begin. "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."
