100 Years of Caribbean Participation By TERENCE HILTON-CLARKE FOR the Caribbean nations participating in the Games of the 27th Olympiad in Sydney, it was the celebration of a century. For one hundred years, the Olympics have brought glory to a select group of countries, and which have seen the rise of many great athletes who have earned the right to be grouped with the best there ever was and, in the process, have gained recognition for their native lands.
Cuba then withdrew from the Olympic Games until the 1924 event in Paris. That was where Haiti made its mark, literally, in the shooting competition. The team of Ludovic Augustin, Astrel Rolland, Ludovic Valborge, Destin Destine and Eloi Metullus scored a total of 646 points in the free rifle competition, to finish in a tie with France behind the United States (676 points). The French eventually won a play-off, leaving Haiti to settle for bronze. Four years later, Silvio Cator, who also served as captain of the Haitian national soccer team, took the long jump silver medal in track and field with a leap of 7.58 meters. This was to be the last Caribbean medal-earning performance for the next 20 years.

Nevertheless, the first Olympic medal was a silver one won by Enrique Figuerola in the 100 meters during the games held at Tokio in 1964. Such result took place in a very even run between the American Bob Hayes, stout and notably tall, and the Cuban, small but big-hearted and displaying and enviable reaction in the start. Final results: Hayes, 10.01 seconds; Figuerola, 10.02. Upon his arrival to Cuba , he was received like a hero. Thousands of fans all over the globe stared at the prowess of this man who became, from that moment on, one of the most important paradigms of national and international athletics. His example has inspired figures who have chosen the tracks to develop their natural talent for sports. His performance in the Olympic final of Montreal was impressive because he had to work hard to obtain the silver medal with a time of 13.33 seconds, a little behind the French Guy Drut (13.30). That was not his best performance, however. A year after that, in the World University Games of Sofia, he walked into history when he established a world record in 110-meter hurdles, stopping the chronographs in the amazing time of 13.21 seconds.

EW:What was your motivation in writing this book? EW: How long did it take? Dr Ince: I started the interviews in 1987 when I returned from London, Dr Ince was an Ambassador to the Court of St James and when I left for the United States I started to write. I know that I finished writing in the mid 1990's, because I have a host of correspondence from authorities in this country expressing their interest in publishing the book. That interest remained in the abstract, and was never implemented. As time passed, I continued to update the book until the authorities found time. That time is yet to come. Let me clarify something. This book on the Olympics is only a portion of the outcome of the larger document my research produced. I have a manuscript of over 600 pages, with a chapter on each national athlete who has reached an Olympic final or won a medal in the Pan American Games, the Commonwealth Games, and the World Championships.

  • THE ORIGIN OF OLYMPIC GAMES
The idea of holding Olympic Games has its roots in Greek mythology. The first recorded Olympics were held in 776 B.C. They were sponsored to honor the god Zeus on the plain of Olympia in the west of the Peloponnesus Peninsula. The first recorded Olympics were won by an athlete from the town of Elida, Coroebus. In ancient Greece only free men of Greek origin could take part in the Olympics.Competitions were always tough, and the prize awarded to winners was a garland of wild olive, but beyond this the victorious athletes earned great honour and esteem not only in their native town but also in the Greek world as a whole.
    MODERN REVIVAL OF OLYMPIC GAMES
Baron de Coubertin, a Frenchman, inspired the Olympic revival. Owing to his great effort the International Olympic Committee was set up on June 23, 1894. To the present day the Committee is the highest governing body of the Olympic Movement. The first international competitions similar to ancient Greek Olympiads were held in the city of Athenes in 1896. They were held in 9 separate sportstrack and field, gymnastics, swimming, weight lifting, wrestling, shooting, fencing, cycling race and tennis. From that time on Olympic Games became a major international event in sports. They were held in many cities of the world, including Moscow /1980/.The Olympic cycle of four years was interrupted only three times: in 1916 because of the First World War and in 1940 and 1944 because of the Second World War.

Karam Gaber's gold medal in Athens was the seventh in Egyptian Olympic history. Mohamed El-Sayed reviews the big ones Click to view caption Anwar, Shams, Fayyad, Gaber, El-Touni , Noseir, Mustafa Egyptians still cannot quite believe what they saw last month one of their own taking the podium to receive a gold medal in an Olympics. But there he was all 96 kilos of him the shaven head and baby face of Karam Gaber on TV, the gold medal won in Graeco-Roman wrestling. It was indeed a rare sight for it was the first time in over 50 years that the Egyptian anthem had been played at an Olympic Games since Mahmoud Fayyad's gold medal in weightlifting in 1948 in London. Gaber's gold upped the country's overall gold medals in Olympic history to seven: El-Sayed Noseir and Ibrahim Mustafa (Amsterdam 1928); Khidr El-Touni, Anwar Misbah (Berlin 1936); Ibrahim Shams, Mahmoud Fayyad (London 1948); and Karam Gaber (Athens 2004). Shams and Gaber won gold in Graeco-Roman wrestling while the rest were weightlifters. Gaber's gold invoked the memory of Egypt's long forgotten gold medallists in the 108-year history of the modern Games. Egypt's first gold medal was that of the weightlifter Noseir in Amsterdam after lifting a total of 335.5kg in the light heavyweight category.
