The Modern Olympic Games
In 1892, Coubertin first introduced the idea of starting the Olympic Games again. Few people were ready to accept his idea. But in 1894 Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and began planning the first modern Olympiad. Although the modern Olympic Games are patterned after the ancient Greek Games, there are important differences. Unlike ancient Greece, modern nations have not stopped wars for peaceful athletic competition. Because of World War I, Games were not held in 1916. Nor were they held in 1940 and 1944, during World War II. The original Olympics were always held at Olympia. Almost every modern Olympiad is celebrated in or near a different city of the world. The earlier Games were open only to Greek citizens and athletes from other Mediterranean countries. The modern Games encourage all nations to compete. A person may enter if his or her country has a National Olympic Committee (NOC) that is recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Events for women have become a major interest in the modern Games, and the winners receive honors equal to those given the male winners. The ancient Greeks furthered culture by giving honors for cultural achievements at the Olympic Games. The modern Olympics hold an arts festival, where the culture of the host country is showcased in various art forms.

The Olympic Movement Modern History Olympic Issues Date
The first recorded Ancient Olympic Games were in 776BC. They lasted for approximately 1000 years.
Place
The Games were held in Olympia, a village in a sacred valley, approximately 500km south west of Mount Olympus.
Purpose
The Ancient Olympic Games were held as a religious, sporting and cultural festival in honour of Zeus, the father of the gods.
Philosophy
The Ancient Greeks believed that both the body and mind needed discipline and that those who practised this discipline could best honour Zeus.
The Ancient Olympic Games
  • These Games were held every four years
Only Greek citizens were allowed to compete. Ancient Greece was divided into independent states, often at war with each other. During the Games there was an official truce, called Ekecheiria.. This meant athletes could travel safely to and from the Games. Violation of this truce was punishable by death.
The Marathon The modern marathon is one event which originated in these Ancient Games. Legend has it that Miltiades, a Greek General with an Athenian army, fought and won a battle against the Persians. He called for an Athenian runner and asked him to carry the victorious news back to Athens. The runner's journey was 24 miles but he entered the streets of Athens and shouted 'Rejoice! We conquer!' He then dropped dead. Although the accuracy of this tale is questionable, the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896, included the marathon to commemorate this legend.

The Olympic Hero In modern times the concept of the hero has changed. There are no longer heroes of war but of peace, such as the Olympic Victors. The Foundation of the Hellenic World wishes to present such heroes and for this reason it has created theeducational programme "The Olympic Hero", which takes place daily at FHW's cultural centre Hellenic Cosmos.

"Revivalist Games" - Robert Dover´s "Olympick Games" Signs of interest in the Ancient Games came in early 17th Century Britain. The country was enjoying growing interest in classical Greek and Roman studies. Robert Dover, an Englishman from Norfolk, was one of the leaders of this movement. He decided to revive the idea of the Ancient Olympic Games and every Whitsun, from 1612, he encouraged people to take part in his own "Olympick Games". These games were held in Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire. People of all classes took part in the events on Dover´s Hill. The events consisted of running, horse riding, jumping, wrestling, fencing, hunting, coursing and throwing. In addition to the sporting events there was a cultural festival, including games such as chess, dancing, poetry and music. Local authorities prevented the games from continuing in 1852 due to "rowdiness and dangerous activities". However, in 1980 they were revived by local people and today are celebrated in June each year. The public is welcome to attend. To top In 1850, Brookes started the Wenlock Games. He had a keen interest in the values of antiquity and felt that a healthy body was as important as a healthy mind. The Games were held annually at Linden Fields, Much Wenlock and consisted of traditional English rural sports.

The Ancient Olympic Games

The Olympic Games were first held in 776 BC at Olympia in Ancient Greece as part of a religious festival. They were one of four game festivals held in Ancient Greece: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympics. The Olympic Games were so important to the Ancient Greeks that wars were stopped while they were held. Click for Olympic posters Ancient Olympic champions were highly revered. They received a crown made from olive leaves, were entitled to have statues made of themselves placed at Olympia, and were believed to bring their hometowns into favour with the Greek gods. It was also common for champions to have all their meals paid for at the public's expense or to get front-row seats at theatres.
