A Vintage Pair of Ice Skates 1924 marked the year of the first official Winter Games, and for the first time events such as figure skating, speed skating, Nordic skiing, bobsleigh, and ice hockey were held at a separate celebration than the Summer Games. Taking place in Chamonix, France, 294 competitors were involved in the first official Winter Olympics. The number of athletes participating in Salt Lake City is projected to be over 2,300. Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie made her debut at the 1924 Games, at age 12, and in 1928, 32, and 36 took home the gold medals. In 1937 Henie took advantage of her world popularity and appeared in her first movie. Her Hollywood career would last over 10 years.

in Davos, Switzerland With the world at war in the 1940s the scheduled games in 40 and 44 were cancelled. As punishment for their roles in WW2, Japan and Germany's absence from Olympic ceremony would continue into the 1948 games in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Twenty-eight countries participated enthusiastically, and it was clear that the games had survived both the world's conflicts, and the 12-year span between the last Olympics. The IOC awarded the 1976 Olympics to Denver, Colorado, but after two years of preparation and financial squabbling, the people of Colorado refused to fund the major event through public taxes. Innsbruck offered to host the Winter Olympics only twelve years since it last played the role, and the underplayed event went off peacefully and without excessive spending.

ROLE OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IN SOCIAL, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Debate Marks End of United Nations Year; Importance of Objectives, Need for Global Support, Practical Measures, Financial Assistance Stressed The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens would be a significant example of the important role played by cultural heritage in social and economic development, the Minister of Culture of Greece told the General Assembly this morning, as the Assembly marked the end of the United Nations Year for Cultural Heritage. Assembly President Jan Kavan (Czech Republic) said that cultural heritage represented the historical record and understanding of an entire people in terms of their works, values, institutions and sights.  All too often cultural heritage had been the target of distraction by virtue of its symbolism of heritage and identity; attacks on cultural heritage were directed against the group itself and indicated intolerance.  He recalled that the proclamation of the Year had taken place just nine months after the destruction of the two Buddhas in Afghanistan, which had represented a culture of tolerance.  Statements on the subject were also made by the representatives of Egypt, China, Mali, Japan, Ukraine, Argentina and Italy.

By: Raymond T. Grant It is right and proper that cultural programs are a required part of the Olympic Games. History has, to a certain extent, driven the integration of cultural programs into the Olympic Games. And, just as we highlight, in both the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the accomplishments of athletes, so too is it noble and right that we celebrate the achievements of artists in Cultural Olympiads. Thanks to the tireless efforts of archaeologists and anthropologists, we have come to appreciate the significance of the Ancient Games and their role in merging sport and culture. Surely this had influenced, in the late 19th century, Baron Pierre de Coubertin in his interest in the integration of art, principally through competitions, as an element in the re-establishment of the modern Olympic Games. Today, Conrado Durantez, President of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee, keeps interest in de Coubertin and his Olympic legacy thriving. In his work The Forgotten Olympic Art Competitions, Richard Stanton details the program for a conference in Paris in April of 1906 called by de Coubertin where choreography, letters, music, painting, sculpture, and other disciplines were detailed and discussed. The inclusion of arts and letters in the modern Olympics was underway.

The Tradition: 25 Years of Combined Bus and Rail Later that year construction began on the Airport rapid rail station, one of many rail construction projects during the 1980s. In May 1980 West Peachtree Street, between Baker and North Avenue, reopened to through traffic after being closed for more than two years. By September 1982 the Peachtree Center and West End stations began revenue service; by December the Arts Center and Midtown stations began revenue service. And in December 1984 five new stations opened: Lindbergh Center, Lenox, Brookhaven, Oakland City and Lakewood/F. McPherson. Four months after opening the stations and nine miles of track, rail ridership was up 29%. In August 1986, the East Point Station opened, extending the South Line by about two miles. A little more than a year later, the Chamblee Station began revenue service and served as the temporary end of the Northeast Line. By September 1990, trains began running on an eight-minute headway throughout the system. At the same time, all southbound trains began running to the airport and all northbound trains started going to the end of the line at Chamblee. Richard J. Simonetta, previously General Manager of the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) in Columbus, Ohio, replaced Gregor. Simonetta would oversee a heavy construction program leading up to the 1996 Olympic Games.
