The History of Olympic License Plates
by Jeff Minard and Mark Coolidge
Special license plates have been issued for official or commemorative purposes for almost every Olympic Summer Games, and three Olympic Winter Games, since 1956. Although the first year of issue known to us is 1956, one cannot say for certain that these were in fact the first issue of Olympic plates. It is possible that a series of plates, for a city hosting the Olympic Games, were set aside for officials of the Games, however none has surfaced to date. The first known plate issued for an Olympic Games was in 1956, issued by the State of Victoria, Australia, for the Olympic Summer Games in Melbourne that year. This plate was issued to officials and dignitaries, in pairs. This is one of the few dated Australian license plates and the only dated Australian passenger series plate. It is believed this plate was only valid for the duration of the Games. This is the only Olympic Summer Games plate to have the Olympic Rings actually painted in full Olympic colors (blue, yellow, black, green and red). The Olympic Rings are fully embossed and were hand painted. All other markings on this plate are black on reflective white. Approximately 200 to 300 plates were produced. There were no known plates issued for the Olympic Winter Games in Cortina d Ampezzo, Italy, in 1956. Olympic plates were issued for the first time in 1960 for both the Olympic Winter and Summer Games. Rome, Italy, hosted the Olympic Summer Games in 1960. Special license plates were issued for officials only. These plates were issued in pairs and were made of celluloid plastic. The front plate was smaller than the rear plate, which is normal in Italy. These Italian plates have a black painted legend with a golden representation of the five Olympic Rings and a bear. The date, (MCMLX) is black on a blue field, in Roman numerals. It is not known how many of these plates were issued though the highest known number to exist is 523.

Posted February 9, 1999 Although 1225 "athletes" competed in the second Olympics of the modern era in 1900 in Paris, historians concede that it was a poorly organized and monumental failure in most respects. It was here, however, that croquet, a sport "with hardly any pretensions to athleticism" according to the official report, was introduced to the Olympics. The Parisian croquet players forestalled competition from overseas by spreading the croquet over many weeks; there was only one paying spectator - an English gentleman. Organized croquet and the Olympic Games have both matured immeasurably in the last 100 years, but croquet - at last on the brink of becoming a truly worldwide sport - will be nowhere in evidence in Sydney at the quadrennial games in 2000. Chris Hudson, Secretary-general of the World Croquet Federation, researched the history of croquet's inauspicious Olympic debut for the WCF Newsletter WORLD CROQUET , from which is adapted the following article.

    The Olympic Games
In the ancient times, four great game festivals were held on Greek land: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. Part of a religious festival, the Olympic Games were held every four years at Olympia. The four year interval was called an Olympiad , and was the system upon which time in ancient Greek history was calculated. The games were so important that even wars were stopped at the time they were held. The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. At first, only one race (the sprint) was run. Later, the discus and javelin throw, broad jumping and wrestling were added. The Olympic Games were held for more than 1,000 years. They were abolished by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius in 394 A.D. The Games were revived in 1896 to promote understanding and friendship among nations. The first modern games were held in Athens, Greece. Young men and women come from all over the world to compete in various sports and represent their country. They live in an Olympic Village at the site of the games. The Olympic Games are organized and governed by the International Olympic Commitee (IOC). It sets the general program, chooses the city where the games are to be held, and determines the standards of amateurism. Each participating country has a National Olympic Commitee that is responsible for arranging the participation of the nation's athletes in the games.

Feature, 08/05/2004 The first summer Olympic Games following the attacks on the USA on 11 September 2001 start on 13 August. They are accompanied by unprecedented security measures, which raise questions about transparency, accountability and impunity. Halya Gowan, Deputy Director of the Amnesty International (AI) Europe and Central Asia Programme, explains the organization's concerns about security measures being taken that are the most comprehensive of the games' history, both in terms of policing the events and in the role being played by NATO and NATO countries. "AI recognizes the Greek government's responsibility to protect everyone within its jurisdiction during the games, but is concerned that such measures may violate human rights. For example, not only will Greek security forces be armed, but media reports indicate that foreign security staff may also be armed. How will the Greek government ensure that all such agents operate under Greek authority? What are the guarantees that immunity clauses will not cover violations of human rights perpetrated by foreign personnel, for example under diplomatic immunity clauses?

    • The athlete Alojz Sokol (born in Hronec), the third fastest finishman (100 m), started with starting number one at the First Olympic Games of the new age in 1896. In the years 1896 to 1912 Hungary was represented by nineteen natives of Slovakia who won one third (3-6-4) of Hungarian medals (11-11-8). After the foundation of Czechoslovakia in 1918 the Czech Olympic Committee extended its activities to Slovakia. But until 1947 Slovakia had no representative in the Czechoslovak Olympic Committee. In the period between two wars (1918 to 1936) eighteen Slovaks presented themselves in Czechoslovak sports dress at the Olympic Games and won two silver medals: thanks to the gymnast Matilda Pálfy and the wrestler Jozef Herda. In 1939, in the era of the Slovak state, supporters of the Olympic Movement first established a preparatory committee (12 May 1939) and then convoked a constituent general meeting of the Slovak Olympic Committee (18 June 1939). MUDr. Gejza Rehák was elected the first chairman (after his death in 1970 Jozef Terlanda became chairman), Vojtech Okolicsanyi was secretary (after the war he also became ice-hockey referee in the Olympic tournament). IOC only accepted SOC as a provisory member. The definitive membership never occurred because the next meeting of IOC was held after the World War II (on 3 to 6 September 1946) and it did not confirm Slovakia as member of IOC.

The history of the Olympic movement in Ukraine started in 1952 when Ukrainian athletes participated at the Games of the XV Olympiad in Helsinki as a part of the U.S.S.R. Team for the first time.
During 1952 - 1990 the Olympic movement in Ukraine was developing and strengthening its position in the country's life. Ukrainian athletes constituted at least 25% of the composition of each USSR Olympic team. During the Games of the XXII Olympiad in 1980 some matches of football tournament took place in Kiev and it was a great success.
On the 22nd December 1990 the I General Assembly of founders took the decision to create the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine and the date mentioned above is the official date of its foundation. The NOC of Ukraine was permanently recognized by the International Olympic Committee in September 1993.

In 1996, an estimated worldwide audience of 3.5 billion viewers was caught off-guard, momentarily transfixed by the events unfolding inside Olympic Stadium in Atlanta. United States swimming star Janet Evans was carrying the Olympic Flame as she ascended a long, steep ramp. Above her, his face suddenly bathed in light, stood "The Greatest" — 1960 Olympic boxing champion Muhammad Ali. The crowd´s applause grew to a deafening roar as Evans passed the torch to Ali, who held it aloft triumphantly. Visibly shaking from the effects of Parkinson´s disease, his unheralded appearance at the Opening Ceremony would become a major highlight of the Atlanta Games.
